My daughter seems to be telling everyone I was a pop star...

As I was sorting out the garage, Alice (5) saw an old Fender mustang guitar. Being keen on that sort of thing, she asked a couple days later "Dad, were you a pop star?" "Ahm, no. I just have some guitars..."

That was about a month ago.

A little later, I took them both to an open evening that the Berks YMT were having, a hands on evening for various musical instruments. While Alice was playing the cor anglais, I bumped into the sax player that I was in a ska 'tribute' band with. Amber (seven) was with me, in the queue for the cornets. (That's not ice cream by the way).

FF to three days ago. Amber had said that some one had told her she was "born to be a detective". Alice then boldly stated that she was "born to be a pop star!". Amber then says what I was dreading, "Oh daddy was once!" relating the chat with the band member ...

"Oh!" Says alice.

five mins later. (not silence, other conv)

"Dad, did you have a beard when you were a pop star?"
"No, I had that for one month when I was bored!"

five more mins...

Alice wearing a baseball cap, turns it backwards on her head and says "Dad, did you wear a hat like this when you were a pop star?"
"No, I was not in a boy band!"

Anyway, I go on to explain that it was a ska trib band, etc, ...

Yesterday, I'm picking up Alice from a party, and she says goodbye like this...
"Bye Cloe, My dad's here.. He was a pop star once, he's telling everyone!"

All the other parents turn to see which pop star is here. "Um, no I wasn't! And I'm not telling everyone I was!"

David Bowie has my sympathy.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

wow, you have a fender mustang? what colour? you selling?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I have enjoyed this story.

I hope my daughter thinks I was a pop star, one day.

It's an easy mistake to make.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm keeping it for Alice, she's going to be a pop star, apparently.

SJ tells everyone SHE is a pop star. Also that she is going to be in Saddle Club one day.

moley, Monday, 15 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

No one should have a Mustang lying around doing nothing.

I hope someone's daughter thinks I am a pop star.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Mr and Mrs In Uniform's daughter probably does.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Hah, Mark -- it's not so bad. I told my friend's mother that my dad had gone out with Annette Funicello. He must have let slip at some point that he'd had a young crush on her which I, not knowing who she was or understanding that she was a famous movie star, took to mean they had "gone out". My poor papa -- I'll never know which of us Mrs Schwalm thought was lying.

Laurel, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

haha, this is so cute!

rainy (rainy), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, the subject came round to recent parties, so good a time as any...

Me: "Right, also, Alice. Don't keep telling people I was a pop star, as I wasn't.
Alice: "OK. I'll just say you're good at Music"
Me: "I can live with that. Fine"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 August 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I felt sure this would be a Dr C thread.

the bellefox, Monday, 22 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

People often say that. Have I no identity?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
No, mark you don't.

Anyhow, fetching out Amber's bike and removing stabilisers, Alice saw the mustang again and decided she wanted to get it out and clean it.

A little later, she was sat with it, playing it a bit, then said "This is mine now. You said"
"When did I?" I reply.
"Ages ago" she said with a smile.

Oh, and also she was with the "you sure you weren't a pop star?" biz. So basically as long as I didn't actually sing and only played the music, thats OK I wasn't one.

please sell it.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

That is the cutest thing ever. I am now convinced that *Amber* will be a pop star. Encourage this guitar playing thing - an early musical start is a good thing. My dad started teaching me how to strum a guitar when I was about 7 and I never forgot it.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I am stupid, there is nothing worse than mixing up people's names. (I do it all the time at work, though.) *Alice* will a pop star. Actually both of them will from the looks of it.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Lawks, they look rather a lot like my cousins did when they were that age, except my cousins are identical twins who play centre-back for Barnet Ladies.

it sucks being jealous of a 5 year old.

World conquest assured.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

She's been doing Guitar at school for a while, but it's been mostly Classical stuff (Hall of the mountain king and so on)

She got a uke for christmas (pics someplace on ILX), so was getting more into chords.

The weekend, she found the "four chords you need to play most songs" vid on youtube, was finding "C" difficult, so I showed her that, and Eminor. This was the morning.

Myself and wife went out for the day, kids stayed with granma, by the time we got back, she'd worked out JessieJ, Adele, and about five others...

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

Tomorrow, Keith Emerson, by next week, Xenakis.
