Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, temping rules, what are you talking about. All of the office sex with none of the repercussions.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

my company has no temp sluts. i am slutless.

kingfish completely hatstand (Kingfish), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

My issue with temping is companies using temps as permanent employ without actually effing giving them super, hols etc, see it happen far too much. I thought it was illegal but hey, IR laws here are going US-style so fast its probably an inevitability.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

kingfish YOU are the slut! That is why temping is great.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

i'm in a temp job and my contract is up in a month. if i leave it and then ignore phone calls from the agency offering me a new job, can i claim jobseekers allowance immediately?

is it the same if i quit or get sacked?

thanks
x

In the US, unemployment insurance isn't available to temps or part-timers, or to those who quit or are fired. Basically, you gotta be a permanent regular employee who is laid off to get unemployment bennies (such as they are.) I dunno where you are, though.

I think you will be able to claim JSA if a temp contract comes to an end (maybe don't tell them that the agency are still offering you work though) but not if you leave a job voluntarily without 'just cause' or if you are fired due to misconduct. That is, you can claim but you'll probably have trouble getting it.

you are just full of questions, siobh.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

get off your bum and work for your money siobh

tory wilson (ken c), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

If you don't like your temping job, you can just leave. You have like a one-day notice period. And if you're sensible you've signed up with several agencies so any of the others will be more than happy to find you work instead. And that is why temping is good.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

yes! and because you finish work at whatever time you're paid to work until, and then you leave and don't think about it any more! and you get to see inside lots of different companies and industries and stuff and figure out how they work and what you might want to do next, and even if you hate what you're doing at any particular job at least you've learned you definitely don't want to do x thing! and if you want a week off, you take one! aces.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

and if you want a week off, you take one! aces.

uh.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

what? i have just taken two months almost entirely off, with little bits of work in between, after two months of working mid-april to mid-june. running v low on cash, hence i am working again.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

my husband says the temp office sluts are the worst.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

i would like pls to make it clear i am not a slut, temp office kind or any other kind.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

haha 3 minutes ago someone brought me champagne. 1 minute ago someone brought me beer. what was that about temping being teh suck?

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

temping in the US sucks - no insurance, not good

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

i think here companies have to have insurance for all their staff? unless you mean health insurance. or national insurance, in which case everyone pays it (it's like £12 a month or something) when they're working and if they're signing on the govt pays it.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

yes I mean health insurance.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

ah ok. that isn't temping that's fucked though, it's the entire fucking system - healthcare is (should be) a right in a first world country ffs.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

oh yes I agree completely. I suppose I more accurately mean temping as a job choice sucks for me. I can just never do it b/c I can't afford all of my medications out of pocket.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

NOW THEY GAVE ME A DOCTOR WHO DVD OMG.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

If it's Mark Of The Rani, it could be a sign they want you to leave.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

no, it is the last three eps of the most recent series :)

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

Temping is also good if you move to a new city because you do a couple of weeks here and a couple of weeks there and if you spend your lunch break walking about you get to know the place pretty quickly. It is thanks to temping that I'm familiar with Cambuslang!

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

What I meant is, it's thanks to temping that I know how to walk from Swiss Cottage to Waterloo.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Familiarity with Cambuslang is never a good thing (unless you are familiar now with the concept of not ever going to Cambuslang ever again, in which case that was a valuable lesson well learned).

It is thanks to temping that I now have a whole new excellent career - I would never have got in on the strength of my CV, but I ended up in the right place at the right time and proved my strengths and abilities and whathaveyou and they made up a job for me so as not to let me go anywhere else.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

I am extremely familiar with Cambuslang.

My godmother still lives there so I can't say hand on heart that I won't ever go there again. Usually I try to persuade her to come over to my mum's when I'm up there.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Lunch was a choice of Harvester v. McDonalds, both looking out onto that big junction with London Road. I did work with that Celtic goalkeeper what let in all the Partick goals, mind.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 September 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

1971 League Cup Final? Evan Williams?

I have been in Cambuslang a couple of times (work-related, both times), and I don't ever feel the need to go back.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 21 September 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Midge Ure came from Cambuslang, you know. As far as I can gather he never took the return trip.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 21 September 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was avoiding typing out his name in case he ever googled himself, but never mind eh?
