Is there any reason why people wearing these IN PUBLIC shouldn't be shot on sight?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

there's clearly a market for UNIVERSITY OF LIFE sweatshirts...

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

they make a good pillow when you pass out drunk on the floor of a friend's dormroom i suppose.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Your students union make A LOT OF MONEY out of them, helping subsidise all the othe rservice you take for granted. As a "anti-fashion" tax it is therefore very useful.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Awwww. I still continue to wear the YALE one my mum got me (and everyone else in my family) when she matriculated, because it is super comfy, and also, because I am so proud of my mum for going to Yale in the first place.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

I have one, it's quite comfy. I bought it out of a slight sense of loyalty to my uni. Not much a defence maybe but they don't seem worth much bile either tbh.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

I needed a hoodie when I was 21 so I bought a Warwick University one. I still wear it, and Sarah can't live without it. I don't even think of it in terms of fashion or anti-fashion.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

dom's pix are all of HOODIES too, i would like to get banned for wearing an oxford hoodie in BLUEWATER. maybe if the chavs started adopting these frightful things, people would cheer their keen sense of humour.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Also, it's the one garment big enough that you can steal one from either sex and it fits well enough ... and if a hot chixor steals yours, it smells good when you steal it back.

amen to that. they are a bit asexual, though, as garments.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Even when someone's wearing NOTHING ELSE?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

well, possibly.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

They are usually big enough that you could not actually see a thing even if they were wearing nothing else. :-(

(I do not find them sexy at all, anyway. They are like the anti-sex garment.)

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. I have to say that if I was with a girl* who was wearing a big, baggy sweatshirt that came down to her thighs, and I knew she wasn't wearing anything else, I'd find it pretty hott.

* I don't think it applies to men, strangely enough.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

On men it would be kind of like Porky Pig, or Donald Sutherland.

I'm the "proud" owner of a Le1cester University "Linguists Do It Orally" t-shirt - does that count?

I'm to ashamed of it I've only worn it once in a decade, and that was in bed. On my own. Indide out.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Indied out? Chuck, you are already the walking personnification of indie. ;-)

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I still have my Univ of Michigan hoodie & other sweatshirts(esp. from the brief time that i was on the crew team/rowing club). i likes them.

kingfish fucked up his login (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe you have these in the UK, too. I'm sorry.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

horrible

I can't think of many things I'd like to support less than Dublin Countryfolks University

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I have a University of Sheffield mug, but the sweatshirts only seemed to be worn by sporty types and international students who were only there for one semester.

Actually, I have no idea where the mug is.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

I've got the university sweatshirt, a couple of tshirts, a pair of coasters, a golf shirt and a rain coat.

I think I've only bought the sweatshirt sans hood. I was given the rest at various times. What I really want is the tie, it's actually really nice as far as nooses go.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I still have one of mine from college which I wore for a great while aftewards. However, being that I initially bought it when I was younger and slimmer, it's a bit...ahem...snug on my frame these days. Also, the folks I want to speak to from my college I already stay in touch with. I have no desire to be accosted by a anonymous fellow alumnus of my school these days.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't dream of wearing one of these. However, I *do* possess a college scarf, college tie and college cufflinks. The scarf hasn't been worn since my third or fourth week at uni. The tie was bought for a friends wedding and hasn't been used subsequently. The cufflinks did get a bit of wear for black tie purposes (college balls, formal college events etc) and at the same wedding the tie was needed for, but again, I haven't used them for years.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Say what you will, but I wear mine often when walking my dog early in the morning or late at night. It's warm and comfortable, and easy to pull on while headed out the door. I, unlike several of the kids in my neighborhood, cannot get into getting all dolled up to make eyes at boys in the neighborhood while bagging poop. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.

allie (allie b), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

oh shit, i do have a tie, and a mug. my mum bought 'em for me. i 'donated' the mug to the folks. i haven't worn a tie in years anyway, let alone my college one.

college cufflinks!! i had no idea such things existed.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

They look even better when worn inside-out.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

You know, this may be a rumor, but I hear that sweatshirts without college logos will keep you just as warm and cozy.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

wtf do you ppl wear in the spring/fall?? i think all of my sweatshirts are university sweatshirts. as are like 90% of the one's i've registered. maybe not counting those b.u.m. things ppl wore like 10 yrs ago.

skinnah, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

You know, this may be a rumor, but I hear that sweatshirts without college logos will keep you just as warm and cozy.

Are these the ones with the embossed kitty cats or the ones with the golf tournament logo?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Mine all say "FUBU."

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I just scored my brother's old university hoodie. It says TRACK on the back. I wore it camping this weekend, and SMOKED LIKE A PIG.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Waitaminnit.
Nick, you went to Florida University for Biological Urges?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but who actually buys quality sweatshirts in any other design?
you can buy brown university sweatshirts that simply say 'brown' on them, which is appealing because you are also advicating a colour. and some of them ARE brown in colour, which is a bonus. and it helps that people might think you're smart.
(no, i didn't go to brown, but i can PRETEND, can't i? yes. sad. hmmm)

Toby, you can get college everything. One of my exes has a Caius college garter!

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I have a purple college sweatshirt, and when I wear it at school I see a million other people wearing the same thing. It's completely neutral clothing that says absolutely nothing about you, which I like.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

My one remaining sweatshirt is the most comfortable thing I own, I love it and I wear it IN PUBLIC. "Indefensible"? Get over yourself.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Ten years ago, I would have complained about university gear of any type. But in comparison to university sweatpants with the name of the school plastered across both ass cheeks, sweatshirts are just a charming reminder of a past life.

Uggh...

Rhodia (Rhodia), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

If I had a University of D3laware sweatshirt, I would rock it because people from D3laware tend to buy other people from D3laware drinks when they run into them in far off exotic places like Chicago.

I went to Mizzou where we had PAW PRINTS on those ass cheeks, rhodia.

I defend these articles of clothing for one reason:

i don't get all the threads on ILE where people talk shit about perfectly good pieces of clothing.

in my imagination everybody on ILE is a balding dude in converse allstars, neutral colored v-neck sweater and thick plastic glasses.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 18 August 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

apparently it's way better to be an affected, pretentious shut-in than to be confused with a fraternity dude or something?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 18 August 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

I would have bought the university scarf but the colours just happen to be the same as Gryffindor.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Where's the one of Cosby in a Hillman sweatshirt?

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I bought a university scarf just because it reminded me of Harry Potter! Not quite Gryffindor, though (purple rather than maroon). So classic.
