What does your voice sound like?

I'm listening to an archive of Maria's (MTS) WPRB radio show. I have to admit that besides enjoying the music, it's cool to hear what Maria sounds like.

What does your voice sound like? If you have any audio of your voice, link it here. Otherwise describe the way your voice sounds to yourself. Do you have an accent? Vocal mannerisms?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

does anyone like the sound of their own voice (literally, i mean). mine sounds horribly flat when i hear it on tape. i mean, i'm from east angular, but still, in my head it's not that bad, and certainly more sing-songy.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Ah fuck it, what do you sound like?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Funny, mine sounds tinny and whiny and just a little bit gaaay. But in my head it has a lot more resonance. I need a sub-woofer. IN MY PANTS.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I sound "kinda gay"!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Oops, I didn't search the archives. So what's the correct form - to continue with this thread or to revive the old one now that you've brought it to my attention?

Maybe a more interesting question would be how your voice sounds in your head vs. in recordings.

Anyway, I sound nervous when I DJ on the radio. Here's a link to a show I did a couple of years ago. My voice can be found about a minute and a half into it.

I recently was trying out this Skype that all the cool kids are doing, and the guy I was talking to hadn't plugged headphones into his laptop, leaving the microphone full access to the speakers, IE unannounced access to the sound of my own voice for me! It was pretty horrible.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't even like the sound of my own voice resonating through my head. Recorded, it's slightly better because I can double-track it and play with the tone and EQ it until it sounds halfway decent.

I think my accent always shocks me, though.

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

This should garner some amusement. Especially considering that I'm from the Deep South. Click on "c'est moi."

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I have always liked your voice Mandee.

My voice in my head sounds much more varied in tone and inflection-- when actually speaking I think I just sound kind of blah and monotonous. I much prefer the one I hear to myself. I have a slight southern US accent and my voice is pretty deep, and I'm told I'm a pretty good mimic.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Mandee, you have a rad voice. Sgs, you are SUCH a good mimic! I really like it when you sound like your mother, though, which just has to be disturbing on some level or other :)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure how I sound. On tape I sound kinda weird.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Ian, which Deep South? Are you an American imitating a British accent?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I alternate between liking the sound of my own voice and having a kind of horrified fascination with it depending on how clear/confident I'm sounding. And how much my original Birmingham accent is managing to creep in. I am far more bland and monotone than I expect myself to be as well, but when I try to sound a bit more expressive and enthusiastic I end up sounding like a fucking kids' TV presenter.

(Coincidentally, one of my less awe-inspiring vocal performances done got put up on the Internet today, but only in a 40mb download with a bunch of postpunk music n'stuff.)

See what happens when you're absorbed by Anglophilic grooviness at an early age? I really wish I could get rid of it -- I'm sure people think that it's contrived and I'm pretentious because of it. Anyhow, I've also recorded some music and so there's a number of songs with my voice on it. Bimble's been listening to some the other day, so if it's getting his approval it must not be bad after all.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Maria, except it's not an imitation -- it's stuck. I was trying to sound as American as possible in that recording and it apparently didn't work!

For Mandee. W.B. Yeats' "The Wheel"

By the way, jaymc, it was originally affected intentionally as when I was twelve I was so embarrassed about being born in provincial ol' Panama City (Redneck Riviera) that I tried to make myself seem as anti-Southern and cosmopolitan as possible, even though I never acted like a typical Southern kid in the first place. I developed the inflection from imitating the accent literally every time I spoke and it eventually stuck. It was very stupid.

"Wusstah speak"

Worcester

Sure people from Worcester talk funny.
People from Mississippi talk funny.
So do Minnesotans, Oregonians and New Yorkers.
Especially New Yorkers.

The bigger question is why does Worcester have a
lake, a village, college and an avenue named Quinsigamond,
but they're scattered around the city like leaves in the fall?

No, it doesn't make sense unless you know that
the community was called Quinsigamond long before
it was called Worcester It's an Indian word that means:
"boy, do these folks talk strange." If you're a newcomer
and you find the local language throws you for a loop,
we've assembled a handy guide.

Before we get to that, let's start with how not
to pronounce Worcester.

Don't make it three syllables. Just forget that
first E is even there. And never, never, never put
an H in the middle of Worcester. People will
make fun of you. So, how do you correctly
pronounce Worcester to make people think you've
been shopping at Spag's on Saturdays and going to
Water Street on Sunday mornings your whole life?

You've dropped the first E and boiled it down to two
syllables.
Now eliminate both R's.
While you're at it, better get that C out of there.
Make the remaining sort of an AH and turn the O into a U.
Wuss-tah.
It doesn't rhyme with sister or rooster. The first syllable
rhymes with puss.

Go ahead and say it. Wuss-tah.

Now you're almost ready to walk into a spa in the village
and order a regular coffee and maybe a couple of tonics
and a grinder or club. One more thing. Always include
your state as part of your hometown, as in:
"I'm from Wusstahmass."

Confused? The following guide to the peculiarities of
the Central Mass. Dialect should help:

Boston Turnpike - Route 9 east of Worcester
Boys Trade - Worcester Vocational High (known
simply as Voke)
Bubblah - Water fountain
Candlepin Bowlin' - Invented in Worcester in
1880 by Justin P. White, and a far superior game
to Ten Pin, a form of bowling known locally simply
as "big balls."
Cellah - Basement
Club sandwich - Italian sub
Dine-ah - Good food cheap, but it's only a diner
if it was made by Worcester Lunch Car Co.
Dinnah - Lunch
East Side - Any neighborhood east of Main Street
Elastic - Rubber band
The Expressway - I-290
Frappe - Ice cream, milk and flavored syrup.(A
milkshake leaves out the ice cream.)
Galleria - Worcester Common Outlets
Grindah - Sub sandwich
The Hill - Belmont, Vernon or Grafton
Jimmies - Chocolate sprinkles
The Lake - Quinsigamond
Package Store - Place to buy beer and liquor
Packy - Shorthand for package store
Parlor - Living room
Piazza - Porch
Pricker, Pricker Bush - A burr or other vegetation
that grows on a bush and sticks to your clothing.
Some use the same word for any bush with thorns.
The Pike - The Mass. Pike
The Project - Great Brook Valley
Regular coffee - Fully caffeinated with cream and sugar.
Spa - A corner store with soda fountain
Square - All rotaries are squares, but not all squares are
rotaries
Tech - WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute)
Three-deckah - Not a sandwich, but a house with three floors,
big apartments, hundreds of stairs and nowhere close to enough
parking.

Soder - Soda
Tonic - Soda (of any flavor or brand)
The Village - Quinsigamond
West Side - Neighborhoods west of Park Avenue
Wormtown - Slang for Worcester

How to say it:

Auburn - AW-bin
Aunt - AHnt
Berlin - BURL-in
Clinton - Klint'n
Ha'past - 30 minutes after the hour, as in: "we're
gonna eat lunch at ha'past 12"
Lake Chargoggagoggmanchaugagoggchaubunagungamaugg
Wep-stah Lake
Leicester - Less-tah
Leominster - Lemon-stah
Millbury - Mill-bree
New York - NooYawk (Rhymes with talk)
Northboro - Nohth-bro (also, West-bro, South-bro and Marl-bro)
Petersham - Peters-am
Pizza - Pete-zer
Shrewsbury - SHOES-bree
Southbridge - Sowt-bridge
Tatnuck - Tatnick
Webster - Wep-stah
Westminster - West-minstah
With - Witch, as in: "Who ya got witch ya", or
"I'll be witch ya in a minute"
(Alternate pronunciation: Wit. "I'll be right wit ya.")
