I Haven't Started A Thread On ILE In A While...

...what should I start one on?

I don't really have any great ideas. But I don't want to neglect the good people on ILE, you know? You deserve a good well thought out thread from me. It's the least I can do.

Here are a few ideas I have been kicking around:

* C/D when people say they are "kicking around" an idea

* what's up with taro root?

* cilantro hatred update

* they sell ramps now in the produce aisle? aren't they just weeds or something? what has wylie dufresne wrought? and what's up with that guy?

* kids today, huh? they sure do poop a lot.

* babies sure do sleep a lot, huh?

* top ten pronounced overbites

* helena bonham carter fashion disaster picture thread

* selling stuff on ebay, huh? what's up with that guy from japan?

* top ten fictional african-americans in wheelchairs: television edition (so many to choose from!)

* C/D Hanging out in a sunny field overlooking the ocean only to realize that you are sitting on old sheep shit and poison ivy

* true or false: nationalism and patriotism are forms of stupidity

* McDonalds, Cheap Wine, & Acid. But What Did YOU live On As A Teen?

Any other suggestions?

this is very Seinfeld "what's the deal with vegetables?!?"

scout (scout), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

oh, like you haven't noticed the proliferation of ramps and taro root. get real!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

What is a ramp, anyway? Surely it is just a gradual incline?

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

ramps are wild leeks. a.k.a. something that grows on the side of the road and something that new york chefs started to put on their menus when they ran out of other seasonal vegetables (maybe).

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Sounds a bit welsh to me.

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

I vote "cilantro hatred update." I'll take every opportunity to go off on that soapy-tastin' shit.

My friend Megan has a convulsive reaction to cilantro. She says it's from having spent nine months in Ecuador.

i love coriander.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Coriander... *shudder* one of the few foods I LOATHE (along with cucumber and... well thats about it I think).

Do they call it "cilantro" anywhere but the US? Where'd that name come from?

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Isn't coriander like dried cilantro? Or the seed of the cilantro plant? Or something?

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

No coriander is that leafy green stuff somewhat like parsley - and I'm assuming cilantro is the same thing. But I only ever heard it called coriander til Americans started referring to it on TV.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

cilantro is when the coriander plant is grown specifically for harvesting its leaves, rather than the coriander seed.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

At least, thats the AU (and possibly UK?) understanding of it - a quick google has revealed to me that indeed, US people seem to ref coriander as the dry herb. How strange. (xpost)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

a lot of people really dislike cilantro. It is very pungent, but personally, I think it's terrific (especially in guacamole). yum.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

i don't dislike it entirely. it just seemed like, for a while there, everywhere i went they would dump it on top of whatever i ordered. now, at the indian restaurant i used to go to, i knew to ask them to leave it off my food cuz they put it on top of everything. but when i order pizza???? and if it isn't an integral part of a dish, and is just a garnish, then why not put it in a little dish ot something on the table? we aren't talking parsley here. it fundamentally CHANGES the taste of whatever you are eating. That was my only gripe. And if it IS an integral part of a recipe, well, then i take it on a case by case basis.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

eurgh, cilantro. I taste it, and I start gagging.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 20 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I think the thai craze has found people using it like parsley, and it really is too strong for that. A few leaves of it in a curry and its all I can taste :(

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 20 August 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Do they call it "cilantro" anywhere but the US? Where'd that name come from?
That's the Spanish. My guess is that using the greens as well as the dried seed originated in Latin America. My Brazilian first husband called it "culantro," which is strange—a hard c vs a soft c in two languages so closely related.
It DOES smell gross. It reminds me of horse-stalls that badly need mucking-out. But guacamole without cilantro is just lame.
Has anyone experienced durian? That's supposed to smell like rotten meat and taste heavenly. Cilantro cubed.

Beth Parker, Saturday, 20 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey Scott, why don't we make this a thread about thread-killing? Because I am the master thread-killer. I could shut ilx down right now, just by posting on every thread. I should make everyone send me five dollars or I'll do it.

Beth Parker, Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

See??!!! I am awesome!!!

Beth Parker, Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it was you. i think it was gently slipping into the, um, ether or slipstream or shuffling off this mortal coil or whatever. beth, everyone who starts posting on ilx thinks that they are the kiss of death at first. it's a rite of passage!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 20 August 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking it was a hazing ritual.
