Cough Medicines - Classic or Dud

I ask this because I apparently kept Mr Pumpkin up all night with my coughing. I don't remember, I was sleeping. I've got a right chest cough coming straight from the lungs and I'm barking like a guard dog.

He instructed me to buy a cough medicine, but I refused, on the grounds that they Just Don't Work. Perhaps the ones that coat your throat help to some extent with a tickly cough, but in my experience the best a cough medicine can do for you is warm you on the way down and make you slightly dopey.

A slight tiff ensued, but I stick to my guns. Do they work or not?

I always suggest an expectorant. I use Mucinex quite often. It'll kill that cough quick-like.

My uncle swears by Krause's Cough Linctus. It tastes like tar with a slight hint of aniseed, and is almost impossible to get hold of unless you live in the Grimsby area.
