Basketball Question

Could someone explain to me how lottery protection works on traded draft picks? Joe Johnson was traded to the Hawks for two lottery protected first round draft picks and Boris Diaw and a veteran exception. How do the protected picks work? If the Hawks get the first pick, what does that mean for the Suns? Do they get a different Hawks pick? How is this determined?

Also, why is there no ILBB?

I Love Baseball = ILB

It was ILB before "I Love Books" appeared and is more active as a board.

a. Basketball is more than just the NBA.
b. I know, I post there.
c. Get bent.

I don't think there are enough dedicated basketball fans/nerds to support an entire board.

Yeah, lottery-protected means the trading team gets to keep their pick if they're in the lottery (or if it's just top-pick protected, ala the pick the Pistons used to take DARKO). My understanding is that it would then be the next year's pick (if they have one), or other arrangements made at the time of the deal.

Teams are also only allowed a couple of lottery-protected trades - one or two, after that you have to release the lottery protection on a previous trade.

Teams are also only allowed a couple of lottery-protected trades - one or two, after that you have to release the lottery protection on a previous trade.

The key is the "Cleveland Cavaliers Rule" that prevents a team from trading their future 1st-round picks in back-to-back years. So if I've traded away my 2006 #1, I can't trade my 2007 #1, but I could trade my 2008 #1.

But what if the 2006 #1 I traded is lottery-protected for 1 year (meaning if I'm in the 2006 lottery, I keep it and trade the 2007 #1 instead)? Now I can't trade that 2008 #1, because the lottery protection could turn the "2006 and 2008 picks" into "2007 and 2008 picks", violating that Rule. So if I want to trade the 2008 #1, I'll have to sacrifice the lottery protection on the 2006 one.

high fives all around.

That rule sounds way too complicated for someone like Isiah Thomas to understand.

Which is why he thought trading Nazr Mohammed for Malik Rose was a good idea.

Warriors are the team to watch this year. You heard it here second.

But the first time was about last year, and was incorrect.

Also, pretty much every bball journo is hopping on the Warriors bandwagon. I'm trying to decide whether I should buy W season tickets or not.

I meant that they'd make the playoffs eventually, but better to be on the bandwagon prematurely than be a Johnny Come Lately.
