i predictably think she's classic, but what do YOU think?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Taught Madonna all she knows.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Classic beyond description. I loves me a photo girl. I loves one with hack even more.

The Original Jimmy Mod: Kind Warrior (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

i also think she is classic!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

stockholm cindy sherman (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

the shermans have a song called 'cindy sherman', it's like most of their other songs.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

is there a band called sherman's shermits?

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

The lovely Emma B can't stand her, but I've never been able to determine exactly why.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Or even vaguely. It's an intense dislike, though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

for a split second i thought you meant emma bunton.

Cindy Sherman: classic

Cindy Sherman's influence on a legion of impressionable young photographers (mostly women, men not so much): dud

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

deep down, they say i'm vermin. got more faces than cindy sherman.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

very classic, also!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

CLASSIC. I think she's the best artist to ever work in the field of print photography. She was certainly a huge influence on my work when I was in school for photography, esp. with her being one of the few major photographic artists to work entirely in an area of fiction, as weird and unfathomable as that is. But either way, her images are classic and stick in your mind for a long time, like a really good pop song, and that's always what I wanted to do in the medium. Thinking of her work now, I feel bad that I'm currently priced out of photography.

her untilted film stills are one of the best concrete examples of post modern cultural identiy, and conceptually important in a dozen ways, i dont love them but i admire the fuck out of their wit, craft, charm, and theory.

after making a msterpeice she has been unable to make anything else, ever, that wasnt boring, obv., badly done, or worth seeing at all.

compare her society doyens with steve misel's versace ads or her scary clowns with the actor diane keatons books.

one trick wonder (not that its nessc. a bad thing--if the trick is so amazing)

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 21 August 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

For what I have seen: classic. The untitled film still inspire so many kinds of feelings and moods for me.

Anthony may be on to something about the "one trick wonder" thing, although it doesn't really bother me.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 21 August 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

I would argue that her tone has deepened considerably, though obviously in the circles she frequents that's not necessarily a good thing

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Sunday, 21 August 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

hands up, who's seen office killer?

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 21 August 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean by tone?
and i have

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 21 August 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

holy shit, cindy sherman made a movie?

(i wonder what it says about me that i keep accidentally typing "cyndi" sherman?)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 21 August 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

Love her pictures of bears, but why no pubes?

Gallery Goer, Sunday, 21 August 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

wait bears?!

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 21 August 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

i saw office killer. had to because i deeply admire(d) cindy sherman. now i realize i only admire her for her early work. as anthony said, she's a one trick poney. or rather, she has evolved but not in a direction i wanted to see. still classic for her stills.

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Sunday, 21 August 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)
