Alan: Yeah, cheers. So, who’s your favourite singer, then?
Ben: Oh, anything, really, you know. Frank Sinatra, Kurt Cobain.
Alan: Who’s he?
Ben: Nirvana. Blew his head off with a gun?
Alan: Why?
Ben: He was depressed.
Alan: Why, were they not very good?
Ben: No, they were great.
Alan: Oh. Someone should’ve told him!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 21 August 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Hahah:

"She told her pal: "Tell me honestly...what does it make me look like that I slept with Alan Partridge?

"Given the grade A stars I've dated it's embarrassing. I mean...Alan Partridge!"

Thats a bit of a giveaway (she wouldnt even know who that was, would she?)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 21 August 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Dear.

She would totally know who Steve Coogan is due to being Anglophile and inhaling the UK media. I've met him loads of times, mostly for work but also at friend's wedding, chilling out on the lawn with a funny cig (he lent my friends his red Ferrari for ride to the reception we were at). As I am not a coke girl I haven't seen the sex pervert in action - I believe that's the trigger - but I know he's had loads of therapy for being a sex addict.

Courtney's just gross and thinking out loud like a total starfucker as usual.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 21 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 21 August 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

He plays an embittered failed TV talk show reduced to working on a local radio station during the graveyard shift. Humour arises from his inability to cope with a lack of fame, plus his social awkwardness.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 21 August 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I won't go into this at length but she's really fucked around/with a lot of people I know so I *really* don't like her, whereas SC is only a little fucker when it comes to sex. I would imagine both caught one another in an act of human minesweeping at the end of a particularly lairy night for both, all equal-like.

What I found hysterical was the high-school way the article's source discussed it: 'Euw! She's way too popular to go with HIM!' Pft. As if.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

"I love you, in a way"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

If this breaks as a story in the US they'll probably just mention that he's a UK actor and leave off any mention of films. Really, I don't get this Alan Partridge stuff at all having never even heard of that character until this story.

American music/film kids will know him from his role in "24 Hour Party People" or possibly Jarmusch's "Cofee and Cigarettes."

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

ok, i found "I'm Alan Patridge" seasons 1 & 2, and "Knowing Me, Knowing You"

which should i watch first?

and i finally found the right goddamn codec to make the audio work, too

kingfish fucked up his login (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

I didnt really like "knowing me knowing you", esp not compared to "I'm Alan Partridge". KMKY was more cringey. IAP was really funny - the few eps I've seen anyway (I dont think it's ever showed in aus, I have some BBC2 VCR recordings)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

xpost.

Start with KMKY and then go to season 1 and then 2. You'll watch straight through and become obsessed. His first visual appearance was on The Day Today, but it's not really necessary to watch that first. Also, look for the Anglian Lives documentary when you're done with season 2.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Kingfish, purely for reasons of context you have to watch Knowing Me, Knowing You first, because I'm Alan Partridge follows it and chronicles Alan's attempt to get another series commissioned by the BBC. I'm Alan Partridge is funnier if you know the other one. (I'm not saying it's not funny without it, but if you have both, may as well do 'em right).

In other words, what Spencer said.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

...and of course, this whole Love/Coogan thing is a usual NOTW hoax/furfy anyway, as it turns out.

Why did the Guardian of all papers run with the NOTW claim? Since when did they do such things?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Reports that US singer Courtney Love is pregnant with Steve Coogan's child have been dismissed by both stars.

In a statement, rock star Love denied reports in The News of the World that she was pregnant by the UK comedian, or that they had a relationship.

"She confirms that she and Steve are good friends and have met a few times in Los Angeles," it added.

A spokeswoman for Coogan had earlier told the BBC: "It's nonsense". She declined to comment further.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

ok, i found "I'm Alan Patridge" seasons 1 & 2, and "Knowing Me, Knowing You"

You should really watch them chronologically but, in terms of funniness:

I'm Alan Patridge #1 > Knowing Me, Knowing You > I'm Alan Patridge #2

Overall however:

I'm Alan Patridge #1 > Knowing Me, Knowing You (radio series) > Knowing Me, Knowing You (Xmas Special) > Knowing Me, Knowing You (TV series) > I'm Alan Patridge #2

kingfish fucked up his login (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

News of the World, so probably bullshit but

The friend added: "She hasn't made any decisions about whether she should keep the baby or not.

"Coutney is 41 and this might be the last time she gets to have another child."

Yeah, great fucking reason to keep it.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

do make the effort for On The Hour and KMKY radio version and The Day Today before watching the Partridge telly shows, it's totally worth it

(also the Partridge section of one of his live videos comes between KMKY TV Chrimbo spesh and IAP#1)
