I've been driving around France for a fortnight with very little idea of what's been going on in Britain. I can't be bothered trying to sift through two weeks of news on the internet - can someone fill me in on what I've missed. From what I could understand from French TV Robin Cook and Mo Mowlam have died, and there was something about the shooting of the Brazilian guy at Stockwell that I didn't understand.
Tell me: did they catch the Liverpool axe murderer and was it Joey Barton's brother? has anyone else been arrested in connection with London bombings? what was the public reaction to Robin Cook dying? what's all this about Stockwell - were the police lying? have greedy bastards Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand decided to stay where they are? have any of the rumoured transfers (owen to united, essien to chelsea, etc.) happened?
I'm off to buy medicine for my sick wife now - when I get back hopefully there'll be some answers here...

Stockwell shooting: the leaked statements of the police involved completely disagree with the eyewitness statements released at the time.

essien to chelsea went through last week. all the talk now is of owen to liverpool, (stupid if you ask me), but that's dependent on baros to villa/lyon. and possibly (according to the papers today) cisse on loan to marseille. but i can't see that. a.cole and rio have both signed lucrative new deals.
robin cook's passing was met with tributes galore. about his principled stance on the war, his great debating skills etc. blair didn't come back from holiday for the funeral (but will be making the memorial service), leading to john mccrurrick (sp? - the racing guy) to denounce blair at the funeral. gordon brown gave the eulogy.
the stockwell tube shooting - there's a thread 'murderers in our midst', which deals with it in some detail. (i don't know how to link to it). but the short version is something like: the police originally gave erroneous and misleading statements to the media (he was wearing a bulky jacket, he ran, he jumped over the barrier etc), however, leaked documents have now shown that he was followed from his house as he went about his normal everyday business, and then shot seven times in the head from close range. no warning. no shouts of "police". no suspicious behaviour. just wrong place, wrong time. also, it appears as if the met tried (successfully) to delay the ipcc investigation into the shooting.
liverpool axe murder - joey barton's little brother ran off to amsterdam, then flew back to give himself up. people have been charged. but not sure if he has. there hasn't been a huge amount about it in the news this week. or if there has, i've not been paying attention.
bombings - 4people charged with attempted murder etc. (3 of the 'bombs' on the trains/bus and the one found in wormwood scrubs. a fifth man, arrested in italy a week after, is now being extradited back. he was one of the tube 'bombers'. (attempted bombers? i don't know what terminology to use. i guess 'suspects'. seeing as none of them have been convicted of anything).

In other news, Madonna fell off a horse.

Cheers, Michael. Sven's fucking around in a footballing sense or an Ulrika sense?

Both. England got horsed by Denmark, but you probably knew that. He's also allegedly still doing the dirty on Nancy with Faria Alam, which maybe you didn't.
