i'm curious, as far too many beers have passed by my lips tonight.

Grell (Grell), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

totally. otherwise I'd never drink.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

Make it a statement - "drinking alone is socially acceptable under any circumstances" and you are otm.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

isn't drinking by yourself kind of unsocial by definition?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, bad phrasing.

Grell (Grell), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Kerouac once said: 3. Try never get drunk outside yr own house

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

It's a TV party.

You and the TV.

Camtron (Cameron), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

what are ya? some kinda lush?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

me and my red dwarf DVDs? ;-)

Grell (Grell), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

wtf is wrong with getting drunk alone? I smoke j's often alone... same difference. It's only bad if you go out to a bar alone, then get tanked, then harrass other people. Even getting drunk alone at a bar is OK, just don't be the dick who's out, drunk alone, being a dick... see?

scout (scout), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

my point was there seems to be an 'unsavoury' view of those who drink by themselves (or maybe just making a habit of it).

unsavoury probably isn't the best wording, but you get the gist of it.

Grell (Grell), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

rummies

CMB, Monday, 22 August 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

being drunk by yrself is no fun. but, drinking by yrself is a whole difft story i think.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Always acceptable after:
1) Death in family/friend/etc.
2) Up to one (1) week after a breakup of a romantic interest that has lasted longer than five (5) months.
3) Up to twenty four (24) hours after having lost a job that you have had for longer than three (3) months.
4) If you feel like it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

If you are drinking to the point of being sloppy alone, you probably have a problem.

However, if you are the only person in your house, and you are drinking to the point of sloppiness while reading & posting to ILX, you aren't alone. Therefore you don't have a problem!

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

You're never alone if you're drinking on ILX!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

I once got extremely drunk on rhum while posting to ILX. It was great fun until I had to stagger to bed. :-)

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

A few years ago I got smashed on white russians while posting to my housemate's computer. There's still threads like "Kate is bored, please talk about ass" and "is it OK to look at naked teenage boybutt on your housemate's computer" floating around as a result.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

its cheap

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

Why go out and drink when I can save money and drink goon at home? On my own, with my partner, on ILX... its all good.

nb: I am probably a raving alky anyway, so my advice may not be suitable for children or anyone else ever.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

drink goon? drink invalid port goon?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

When else is it appropriate to drink fortified wine?

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

There's still threads like "Kate is bored, please talk about ass" and "is it OK to look at naked teenage boybutt on your housemate's computer" floating around as a result.

How do we tell the difference between threads you've started when drunk and threads you've started when sober? ;-)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

Oi, hush you. Threads I start sober tend to be about "European Languages of Obscure Origin" and "What's Your Favourite Tree". Humph. No one ever remembers my good threads.

Ewgh, I dont drink FOUR litre cask wine! That's paint stripper ;P Two litre Yalumba's for me thanks ;D

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

DRINK ONE CASE OF MUSCAT. YOU"RE TOO OLD TO BE GOONING IT UP.

You can get some pretty amazing $7 cleanskins from Dan's, though, why go cask?

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

for the glamour

CMB, Monday, 22 August 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

whats cold duck btw?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Aaaahhhh... Cold Duck. I miss COld Duck. Purple champagne. For goffs. Oh yeah.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

my homebrew is unacceptable to the genral populace.

glass of spumante trayce?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

$7 bottle of wine costs more than $12 2L of wine. Economics innit. Really, some of the yalumba/banrocks are nice.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Also, if I buy it by the bottle I would probably drink the bottle in half an hour flat.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

...I'm not very convincing so far am I.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

I think it's worth the extra expense.

Besides, you can't threaten anyone with a smashed goon bag.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

wait...goons are those 2 litre BIG glass fuckers aren't they? i always think of them as having a little glass loop for yer thumb.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

christ i fuckin hope so

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

saturday night i was supposed to meet up with a couple of friends at the coach and horses in hollywood, but neither of them could make it because they suck. i went there anyway. it's the only bar in l.a. where they actually know my name, because i used to live around the corner. i saw dave mustaine there once, nodding off in the corner. and henry thomas, somewhere between his performances in gangs of new york and dead birds

gear (gear), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

i always drink those yalumba 2L gooners, they're fine quality-wise - i doubt a $7 cleanskin would be a great deal better anyways. the red versions give me a hangoverish headache after only 1 or two glasses though, i assume there must be some preservative or something in there that does it.

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

i often find myself drinking alone in bars due to my crap friends having no manners for turning up on time. bah!

but not drunk alcohol alone at home for a long long time. not that i think there's anything wrong with it mind.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Besides, you can't threaten anyone with a smashed goon bag.

Hahahah... I love you Sash, that has just given me the best mental image EVAR. Like, trying to beat someone up with an inflated goon bladder. Yee hee.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I drink at home pretty much every Friday and Saturday night if I'm not going out. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I don't get legless drunk or anything, just have a few beers.

I'm not actually alone though because I'm with my wife, but she doesn't drink, so I'm the only one actually drinking BOOZE.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 22 August 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

"wtf is wrong with getting drunk alone? I smoke j's often alone... same difference."

Question answered.

jkasgf, Monday, 22 August 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

drinking in the pub on yr own with a paper or something to read is classic. i did it last night cos i went to the wrong pub. but i wouldnt be that up for it if i didnt have a book or economist or something

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I like to have a quiet drink and cig alone whilst writing sometimes, at my local... only it gets a bit clumsy cos I cant hold a cig and a pen at the same time - I keep wanting both in my right hand. How the hell d'yer smoke and write at once?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

It's a lot more socially considerate to drink alone at home - so that you can just flop into your bed at the end of the evening.

Benefits to society:

- no vomit on buses, trains

- less drunken crime, vandalism etc

Bob Six (bobbysix), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Good drinking alone drinks:

The Soon To Be Joined Drink:
Wine, champagne, cava etc. You are cooking and expect flatmates/ partner/ friends coming for dinner to show up soon. You open the bottle because you need it for the cooking/ can't wait any longer.

The Really Shit Day Drink:
Spirits and mixer/ whatever is lying around.
You come in, collapse on the sofa feeling shattered and pissed off and the only thing that will make it feel better is a hefty gin and tonic/ Campari and soda etc.

The I Can't Sleep Drink:
Brandy and hot chocolate/ schnaps and hot chocolate/ whisky and lemon.
The only time drinking alone and in bed won't make you feel like a degenerate.

The Getting Ready To Go Out Drink:
Glass of wine (pref. fizzy), mini bottles of champagne, bottled beer/ spirits and mixer.
A close cousin of The Mini-Bar Drink (which is exactly the same, just forty times more expensive or totally free depending on how lucky you are). Something to sip on while you get changed and listen to music before leaving the house/ hotel room.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

anna's right.
however, i never saw what the problem was with drinking alone.
i have a bare minimum of a couple of beers when i get home from work and have done for about 8 years. beer doesn't even count as drinking as far as i'm concerned.
a bottle of wime while watching movies is good, too.
a few gins or a screaming big whisky is really useful if you've had a bad day.
my home alcohol inventory for today runs a bit like this:

4 cans of warka (great eastern european beer)
2 bottles nigerian guinness
1 bottle tanqueray gin
1 bottle otard cognac
1 bottle stolichnaya
1 botle pitu cachaca (significantly battered on saturday caipirinha bender - indulged in with company, as if that makes any difference)
1 bottle crown rotyal blended whisky
1 bottle dalwhinnie single malt
6 bottles of white wine of varying levels of decency (a couple of perfectly acceptable gluggers and a few good 'uns)
2 bottles of really good red wine (which i sadly can't really drink coz red wine now gives me really shitty migraines, as much as i love the stuff)
1 bottle perrier jouet champagne
1 bottle of drambuie (tastes like shite as a drink, but really good for glugging over stawberries, raspberries or good vanilla ice cream)

stelf)xxx, Monday, 22 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

1 botle pitu cachaca (significantly battered on saturday caipirinha bender - indulged in with company, as if that makes any difference)

Aaaahhh!!! That stuff is vile! (It is also the official drink of the Shimura Curves and I was trying to remember its name.)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Party at Stelf0xx's place!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

it's fine if you make caipirinhas with it with enough fresh lime and demerera. on its own, i can't even imagine how bad it would be.

stelf)xxx, Monday, 22 August 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

I like Cachaca! My friend had a bottle of it for some reason that he'd hardly touched because he hated it, so I polished off most of it one night. And I was on my own for some of that! He went to bed, I stayed up talking to my girlfriend (now wife!) on MSN til I couldn't see well enough to type.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

We were mainly drinking it with pulverised nectarine and peaches - but still had to put in two and a half spoons of brown sugar to make it drinkable.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I drink alone a lot.

I have noticed that three beers while reading is approximately equivalent to one beer while socializing, though.

I can get scarily close to finishing a six-pack or an entire bottle of wine alone at home, without feeling especially buzzed. The same number of drinks in a social setting would have me underneath the hostess.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

i think my main point is that i like drinking more than people

stelf)xxx, Monday, 22 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I drink to make myself like people more.

Or maybe I drink to make myself more likeable to people.

Don't know.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

"The more he likes me
The more I drink
I think the more I drink
The more he likes me...."

(ah, I love those lines)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm confused. In my case, it would be

"The more I drink
The more I think
He likes me
I think I'll drink more!"

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

i am of course kidding. i love you all - even you, kate, and i'm sober. i just think it's silly to only drink when you're in company. it's almost as daft as saying i'll only meet people when i'm drinking.

stelf)xxx, Monday, 22 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

"Even" me.

Greeeaaaaat.

I don't know. AMP brought it back from her last holiday on duty free. Quick! Go round theirs and nick their booze!

yeah, you can get it quite a few places. but i don't know where you live stevie, so try that booze shop on old compton street - you know the one.

I used to do that after working out. Kind of counter-productive, but it was nice.
