Backache, back exercises and general health

I often get low-level pain in my lower back, which I know is part of life once you get to a certain age. But I want to do something to minimise muscular problems, and I wondered if anyone has experienced advice or training to strengthen the area?

Go see a physiotherapist - you can get a GP referral. Joe used to have immense back pain problems, and they gave him all these strange exercises where he used to have to lie on the floor thrusting (immensely amusing for me to watch) but apparently they helped greatly.
