Is 'x' gay? What are the legal implications of asking this qu on here?

Two parter, and I'm expecting this thread to be either deleted or heavily asterisked in seconds.

Speculation is rife about the sexuality of the following:

Simon Cowell
Louis Walsh
William Hague
Seb Coe
Darren Day
Robbie Williams

Are they gay?

Assuming they are all gay and a bunch of people give anecdotal evidence below, what are the legal implications for ILX? Is it ok to discuss this type of thing on the internet or do libel laws apply?

And in other news, is it correct that the NoTW have a bunch of pics of Beckham snorting coke but don't want to destroy the Beckham brand so carroting them in front of Davie's face, trying to get a 'Beckers Confesses!' interview out of him? Is supposed nice-guy Gary Lineker a notorious womaniser who once had an affairs with the tabloid's most spiteful harridan uck, uck, uck Ulrika Jonsson?

Seriously, is Simon Cowell gay? I must know!

jonny-gi, Monday, 22 August 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

You must know? I don't know why you'd think he was, he doesn't seem very gay to me.

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

It is absoultely fine to ask the question.

It is not okay to answer the question, if your answer is actually incorrect.

It is stupid to care either way.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, is Simon Cowell gay?

Who cares, really? Why does it matter?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Is this News of the World journospam?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Ask popbitch, they love a good libellous Beckham story over there.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Did I stumble onto Popbitch by mistake? Who are these people anyway?

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Carr sleeps in an oxygen tent whilst Add N To X's 'Revenge Of The Black Regent' is performed to him on tuba by a weary goth. Every night!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

So if someone answered with the truth (but had no way of proving it) that'd be ok?

Yes it is stupid to care. But only in the same way that it's stupid to care who wins Big Brother.

I'm sure Cowell is gay. Let's look at the evidence:
Over 40.
Unmarried.
Close to his mother.

GAY!

(hiya all you holier/broadsheeter than thouest nay-sayers! i don't think is the thread for you, try the one directly below, thx bye)

j-gi, Monday, 22 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Sounding more like a Murdoch hack with every post.

What about Desmond Carrington though?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Now Jimmy Carr, surely he is!

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

So you dont like gay people then, do you j-gi? I mean why else would it matter to you? Do you HAVE to know how many times a week some pop starlet or actor has a shag or a shit?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure that 'x' is gay. I mean, that questionable simultaneous equation he's been carrying on with 'y' - how can you doubt?

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

how the fuck should any of us know? let alone care.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

i think everyone knows Louis Walsh is gay and he makes that clear in just about every show and intereview he's ever done. where's the specualtion? he's out! why does everyone want everyone to be gay all the time now?

beanz (beanz), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I love gossip. I just wish it were gossip about people that I actually knew who they were!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Louis Walsh
William Hague
Seb Coe
Darren Day

I've never heard of these people, are they British celebs or something?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

X-post, D is gay, but C definitely goes both ways - has been known to even enjoy the occasional 3-way with E and M! Squared, even!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Louis Walsh
William Hague
Seb Coe
Darren Day

I've never heard of these people, are they British celebs or something?

Louis Walsh - X Factor judge and boyband music mogul type
William Hague - Former leader of the Conservative Party
Seb Coe - world class middle distance runner, world record holder, Olympic Gold Medal winner, then a Conservative MP and now Lord Coe. Instrumental in London's succssful 2012 Olympic bid. (and also formerly William Hague's personal trainer
Darren Day - he's not a celebrity, get him out of here

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Who cares, really? Why does it matter?

I care, really. Well, mildly. Enough to spend a few minutes posting a message on an internet messageboard full of questions like 'cough medicines - classic or dud'. It doesn't matter much, hardly anything does.

So you dont like gay people then, do you j-gi? I mean why else would it matter to you? Do you HAVE to know how many times a week some pop starlet or actor has a shag or a shit?

Wow. Why the bilious reaction? I almost feel like I shouldn't respond to something so laughably obnoxious (hi kids, please quote this and obey in relation to this thread!). I like knowing about celebrities. I'm very interested in their secrets. If a celebrity is gay and hiding it then this is interesting.

If part one of the question mortifies you so much why not a) ignore the thread, b) answer the 2nd part about the libel. And hell, yeah I wouldn't mind knowing how many times a week Jessica Simpson has a shit and shag.

I wasn't aware that Louis Walsh was out. Assuming that Simon is in the closet, I wonder what his reasons are for staying there.

Yeah, sorry Americans/non-Brits. These are all a bunch of British celebs/politicians.

johnny-gi, Monday, 22 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

God, Onimo, you've ruined it for me.

Here I was hoping that the poster really was just talking about random people that they knew from down the pub/bloke at their school or something like that. Would have been much better that way.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Bilious? Nah. Yanking yr chain? Probably. I just think this kind of gossip's really overdone, is all *shrugs*

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Simon Cowell
Louis Walsh
William Hague
Seb Coe
Darren Day
Robbie Williams

Are they gay?

Yes, sometimes. Other times they are very sad, lonely and want a cuddle.

Well Darren Day could possibly fit into that category, and probably Hague as well given that hacks couldn't be arsed writing about him when he was a Potential Prime Minister.

Are you more interested in the gayness or the legal implications? I don't know if Australia has the crazy libel laws that the UK has, or if that even matters. Certainly as an American it's perfectly legal for me to declare any of them gay or not, but of course I don't actually care whether any of them are gay, since I'm not sleeping with them anyway.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Cowell's straight. Which doesn't mean he's not gay.

everything, Monday, 22 August 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

what i don't understand is why would this question be considered libelous? that's like equating being gay with being a thief. for this question to be libelous, we'd have to assume that incorrectly guessing someone's sexual orientation is to cast unfair aspersions on their character. we've got a long fucking way to go. i forget this, sometimes, living where i do, but it's true.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't know how much things have changed since Jason Donovan, an Australian, sued someone for announcing him as gay and won. Presumably he felt it would harm his career due to attitudes at the time etc., or worse.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

In Mr Donovan's case, it sesms to have been "worse."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

derrick, explain donovan suing the face. i don't know the details of the legality of qus like this, hence me asking here.

casuistry, im interested in both the first qu, and the 2nd qu. i'd like to know if the above-named are gay or not, and about the legality of asking such qus on a freely accessible message board.

trayce, i think qus about losing jobs, relationships ending, feeling suicidal, etc are a bit 'overdone' but i woudn't go on those threads accusing them of being a fucking racist or whatever. 'yanking your chain' is a pretty pathetic excuse btw.

google comes up with nothing about louis walsh being openly gay.

amusingly, the seb coe rumour comes from him being seen carrying hague's bags into parliament one time.

jgi, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

[seb is said to be having an illicit affair with hague. i believe it about as much as you do]

jgi, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, I dont get it. You've asked if said persons are gay, but you're worried if asking/discussing this is legal. But... you've already asked, so its too late isnt it(I'm serious here)?

My original point also, rude as it was (playfully so, though) was genuine - why does it matter? It just feels like asking this, esp in light of libel, implies that labelling someone gay is an accusation or slur that is a terrible thing. The fact that is even possible is a bit sad, I think. Thats all rilly.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

i think qus about losing jobs, relationships ending, feeling suicidal, etc are a bit 'overdone' but i woudn't go on those threads accusing them of being a fucking racist or whatever.

Sorry, but you are coming across like a complete cunt here. Jobs, relationships, suicide, etc. are real issues affecting the real lives of posters here on a daily basis. We talk about these things in order to stop feeling alone, isolated, etc. etc. - WTF does "racism" have to do with any of this?

Honestly - WHAT the fuck does whether Celebrity (read: TOTAL STRANGER) is gay or not have to do with you? To paraphrase a gay celebrity "The only time if I'm gay or not is any of your business if you are sitting in my lap."

If you want to talk about your own sexuality, and your own experiences, then go right ahead. But if you just want to participate in this endless vicarious gossipmongering, then fuck off to Popbitch or go read Heat Magazine. Get your own life instead of leeching off the vicarious thrills of celebrities.

x-post:

Also OTM, as I was somewhat red-flagged by the celebrity issue. (As if talking about the lives of celebrities is somehow less "overdone" than talking about one's own life.)

Why *are* you so obsessed with finding out whether these people are gay? Is it because you'd like to sleep with them? (Not a slur at all, BTW, a genuine question.) In which case, off to the "crush of shame" thead with you.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, I dont get it. You've asked if said persons are gay, but you're worried if asking/discussing this is legal. But... you've already asked, so its too late isnt it(I'm serious here)?

Hence me saying I expected it to be asterisked within seconds. If it was illegal then I expected it to be altered.

why does it matter?

As I've already said. It doesn't matter. It matters about as much as some British soap star dressing up in women's clothing and going dogging. It's mildly interesting. If you don't find it interesting, don't read. But to come on here and add 2 and 2 and come up with 29 and scream HOMOPHOBE, well that's a little bit annoying.

...implies that labelling someone gay is an accusation or slur that is a terrible thing...

Agreed, it's sad. But as said above, what about Donovan? I don't hold a strong belief that being gay is an EVIL, I'm just curious about how a qu liek this would be treated in the courts. Clearly, it's a dead thread already as it looks unlikely people will respond with genuine answers after all this YOU FUCKING CUNT WHY ARE YOU PRYING INTO THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PUBLIC FIGURES.

Kate, and you're coming across like an unhinged handle-flyer-offer. Is ILX solely for the solving of personal problems? As much as you'd like it to be, no, it's not. It's also for qus like 'kettles s&d' and discussions of Big Brother. [the use of 'racism' was a response to Trayce's YOU HATE TEH GAYZ rant]

WHAT the fuck does whether Celebrity (read: TOTAL STRANGER) is gay or not have to do with you?

Are you the same person who said "Don't get me wrong, I love gossip" above? If you must know, I think celebrity TOTAL STRANGERS are fair game for just about anything. Anyway, find a 'the horrors of tabloid culture' thread and go there and screech along with Marcello.

But if you just want to participate in this endless vicarious gossipmongering, then fuck off to Popbitch or go read Heat Magazine.

But I already do!

Get your own life instead of leeching off the vicarious thrills of celebrities.

haha, the 'get a life' insult is my favourite of them all.

Why *are* you so obsessed with finding out whether these people are gay? Is it because you'd like to sleep with them?

hehe, this is where I go NO, NO WHY DO YOU THINK THAT NO GOD NO. Anyway, no. I am interested in finding out as I like to know the truth about my celebs, I want to know if the tabloids are lying to me about Darren Day being a womaniser, I want to know if a gay man became leader of the Tory party and how on earth he managed it, I want to know if the most powerful man in music is managing to pull off some enormous fib on the public with the help of Max Clifford.

Anyway, Kate this is clearly going to lead into some epic bitchfest where you get your daily tantrum out of the way and I completely fail to get answers to either of my qus. Thanks for that. I'm outta here before I get involved in your pointless shit.

jgi, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

I want to know if the tabloids are lying to me

If you really need to ask this, then abandon all hope etc etc.

BTW: I'd hardly call my original post a "YOU HATE TEH GAYZ rant". I was genuinely baffled as to why you wanted to know so badly, just as I am baffled by the very idea of gossip, womens mags, Big Brother and the like. I mean Women's Day etc photoshop 3/4 of their pics. Sure, its a bit of fun, and I read them for a laff, but if you're going to ask this question, people are also going to ask why you're interested. I dont think anyone's denying you asking or telling you its wrong - we're asking WHY! heh.
