Apologies if this has been done before, but 'IQ' is too short to search for.

Have a go at this IQ test

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I got this:

heinrich57, your IQ score is 135

heinrich57, your IQ score is significantly above average. Congratulations! You have a wide range of exceptional skills which are much stronger than those of the average population. You are also skilled at answering the types of questions that are asked in a classic IQ test. The test analyses your strengths and weaknesses based on your mathematical, linguistic, visual-spatial and logical skills. Even though you have high scores in all of those areas, we are able to analyse your results to discover the areas in which you have the strongest abilities.

You have a strong ability to process visual-spatial and mathematical information. These skills combined with your strengths in logic are what make you a Visual Mathematician.

You're able to understand patterns visually and in numbers. That means your mind can create a mental picture for any problem. In addition to that skill, you possess an intelligence that allows you to apply maths to that picture, too. That helps you manipulate multiple parts of the picture (or problem) to come up with a solution. You have many skills that are critical to success and problem-solving. Your talents help you understand the "big picture," which is partly why people may turn to you for direction -- especially in the workplace. You flourish in environments where tasks are clearly defined, and you excel at improving processes and making things more efficient. Like Einstein, your ability to detect patterns and your skills in maths and logic, make it natural for you to come up with ideas and theories that simplify processes for everyone.

Obviously my name isn't really Heinrich, but you have to register to get your results and I wasn't giving my details over to some randome website.

John only likes perfect squares. 900 is the square of 30.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 22 August 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

i think the first set are all square numbers the 2nd set aren't. 20 squared = 40, 10 squared = 100, 60 squared = 3600.

In that list only 900 is a square, 30 squared. i think.

I got 140.

Whether or not you intend to absorb every piece of information that comes your way, your mind has certain steel-trap qualities to it. You are a knowledge sponge. You have almost enough words in your head to fill a dictionary, and you're equally adept when it comes to manipulating numbers. You can also detect important patterns in number sequences, and probably remember the mnemonic devices you were taught in your early school years.

if you read the directions wrong and think jeff likes 3700 rather than 3600, and don't write very clearly, the answer is 1100, because jeff likes a series of numbers, beginning with 100, where the next number in the series is the sum of a) the current number in the series and b) the current number in a second series, beginning with 0, in which the next number in the series is the sum of the current number and 100, i.e.
100+0=100
100+(0+100)=200
200+(100+100)=400
400+(200+100)=700
700+(300+100)=1100
1100+(400+100)=1600
1600+(500+100)=2200
2200+(600+100)=2900
2900+(700+100)=3700

Even though you have high scores in all of those areas, we are able to analyse your results to discover the areas in which you have the strongest abilities.

You are gifted with the natural fluency of a writer and the visual and spatial strengths of an artist. Those skills contribute to your creative and expressive mind.

Insightful linguists can take complex concepts and articulate them to just about anyone. You have a gift with words and insight into processes and the way people think. These talents enable you to explain things clearly to people. Helen Keller is a great example of an Insightful Linguist. Blind, deaf and mute, she was still able to put things together in her mind and to understand complex ideas. She could do that because she was able to conceptualise ideas internally. Though she could not literally see, she had the visual and spatial skills necessary to understand patterns on an abstract level. She learned to read, write and ultimately became a writer on issues of social justice.

135.

"Like a meticulous collector, you've fed your brain a unique set of facts and figures over the years. Words, numbers, you've got it all. That's what makes you a Facts Curator."

Now I'm going to take it and miss every question purposefully.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Here's what you get if you miss EVERY QUESTION:

Forksclovetofu, your IQ score is 73
Inventive Inquisitor

forksclovetofu, your IQ score is lower than the average IQ score. However, this does not mean that you are less intelligent than the average population. There are a lot of factors that might result in a lower score. Maybe you took this test while you where distracted or maybe a bit tired. Also an IQ test cannot measure all the skills that play an important role in measuring the total intelligence. Such a test essentially measures how well you are equipped to handle a particular, very structured type of question. The classic IQ test examines your strengths and weaknesses based on your mathematical, linguistic, visual-spatial and logical skills. By analysing your answers, we can discover the areas in which you have the strongest abilities.

You have the unusual talent of being equally good at both mathematical and verbal skills. That, paired with your thirst to learn through experience, makes you an Inventive Inquisitor.

Your strength lies in the methodology you have naturally adopted to understand the world. Basically, you have perfected "learning through living." You have a unique ability to teach others by taking them through actual experiences. Your talents come in handy especially when confronted with unfamiliar or unproven situations. Most people search their brains for previously stored information that might help in a given situation. You, however, take things as they come and see things as they are. You are a great improviser and are probably open to an unusual amount of change.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

y'all forgot to deduct 10 pts from your scores for wasting time to take an IQ test

lester thaut, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

I think I got one of those cliches wrong. It was something like "The simple truth is rarely simple and never _____". I put 'true', then succombed to paranoia and changed it to 'complete' (or something).

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yer blob solution - that would make sense Kate! I ended up choosing the ones the same size as each other, just cos they looked a bit dodgy.

x-post: well the phrases were sort of founded in logic weren't they?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think they were, mostly. I couldn't do the blob one either, and my eyes started to hurt staring at the multi-coloured squares/semicircles one, though I got it in the end I think.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

The simple truth is never simple, and rarely pensive.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple. Is the actual phrase. I suppose that one is quite logical, or at least rhetorically consistent.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I went by mathematical consistency on that one, because I didn't understand it at all. Maybe it's just another memory test. Sigh.

The one with the coloured squares was simple! I don't know, I just have a brain that recognises patterns instinctively because I *knew* which one was right immediately, but then had to think about why that particular one was right. (the colours were inverted along the same rules as the other diagonals as well as the pattern flipped along both axes.)

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

like Adam way upthread I had my IQ tested a couple of times when I was about 12 and it was v high (176), I even got invited to join Mensa (I think I was enthusiastic at first until the junior newsletter arrived and I was like "who are these freaks?"). Anyway I don't test it any more for fear that it has plummeted since, I certainly don't feel anywhere near as precocious as I did then.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Well, your IQ is your mental age divided by your physical age or some such nonsense - so of course bright children have such a higher IQ than bright adults. It's easier to be a 7 year old with the mind of a 25 year old than a 35 year old with the mind of a, erm, 13 year old? Yarrr, my intelligence really has slipped, has it not?

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

it's very common for them to go down significantly as you get older. if you're a smart child and you do one of the kids tests, you can often appear to be a lot smarter than you really are. i'm a reasonably clever aduly, but i'm not a genius, which is pretty much what my school-age standardised tests said. so, i really wouldn't worry about it, lex. i've always thought of you as pretty stupid anyway, for what it's worth.

Pea, your IQ score is 124

Pea, your IQ score is slightly above the average IQ score. Congratulations! Among your skills, there are certain areas that stand out above the rest. The classic IQ test analyses your strengths and weaknesses based on your mathematical, linguistic, visual-spatial and logical skills. By analysing your answers we can discover the areas in which you have the strongest abilities.

You are equipped with a verbal arsenal that enables you to understand complex issues and communicate on a particularly high level. These talents make you a Word Warrior.

Whether or not you recognise it, your vocabulary is your strongest suit -- use it whenever you can. Since your command of words is so great, you are also a terrific communicator -- able to articulate big ideas to just about anyone. Your wordsmithing prowess will also help in artistic and creative pursuits. The power of words translates to fresh ideas off paper too. Since you have so many words at your disposal, you are in a unique position to describe things in an original way, as well as see the future in your mind's eye. In short, your strengths allow you to be a visionary -- able to extrapolate and come up with a multitude of fresh ideas.

Blah, blah, blah. Thanks for the compliments but I prefer money or blowjobs. How did knowing several quotes qualify as intelligent?

i got 135, surprisingly enough

it also says i am a 'facts curator' which is also not surprising as i tend to remember loads of random stupid facts

133 - Visionary Philosopher

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the thing about this test is... it's not hard. Except, like I said, for those shape-matching questions, which I have always assumed you just have to go with your gut on.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

The only difficult shape-matching question is the one with blue triangles, rectangles and balls. There doesn't seem to be any real pattern there.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah i was stumped on that one...

I went for the only one where the shapes were the same size.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

(After thinking about it for about three minutes I should add)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Stevem is right, I think. They all consisted of a larger base shape with a smaller shape sprouting up except for that one.

Chris, your IQ score is 140

Chris, your IQ score is significantly above average.

Your mind's strengths allow you to think ahead of the game -- to imagine or anticipate what should come next in just about any situation. Because you're equally skilled in the numerical and verbal universes of the brain, you can draw from multiple sources of information to come up with great ideas. The timelessness of your vision and the balance between your various skills are what make you a Visionary Philosopher.

In addition to your strengths in maths and linguistics, you have a knack for matching and anticipating patterns. These skills and your uncanny ability to detect the underlying blueprint of most of life's situations add to your visionary philosopher mind. Two philosophers who share the same combination of skills you possess are Plato and Benedict Spinoza.

Armless, your score is 100! [Note: I chose to disguise my identity.]

Armless, your IQ score is precisely average. Congratulations! You have an average range of average skills which are identical to those of the average population. You are also able to answer the types of questions that are asked in a classic IQ test, but not very well. The test analyses your strengths and weaknesses based on your mathematical, linguistic, visual-spatial and logical skills. Even though you have average scores in all of those areas, we are able to analyse your results to discover the areas in which you have the strongest abilities.

Your mind's strengths allow you to survive average situations where there is very little danger of encountering wild animals. You become distracted by small itches or by thoughts of sex. Because you're equally unskilled in the numerical and verbal universes of the brain, you can draw from undernourished and malformed sources of information to come up with questionable, but unremarkable ideas. The limitations of your vision and the dimness of your various skills are what make you an Easy Mark.

In addition to your mediocre aptitude in maths and linguistics, you have a knack for watching television. These skills and your uncanny ability to notice when your shoes are reversed or your pants are on backwards add to your ability to clothe yourself unassisted. Two philosophers who share the same combination of skills you possess are Donald Rumsfeld's wife and the bag boy at the A&P.

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Low thing to say about Mrs. Donald Rumsfeld, considering everything else she has to go through, Aimless, but then what can one expect from someone of your outstanding mediocrity.

124. I'm a "word warrior." Heed my call: fuck off.

shut up ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

We subjected my oldest kid to an IQ test. Because she had an almost perfect score on her exams in the first grade, we wanted her to skip the second grade. She scored 135 or something. Could have been more as she's still young and secondly she's a perfectionist. lol I think it's rub to do the test but had to be done to see if she could skip the year.
