"You have to want this so bad that you're willing to risk everything ..."

My gf made a rather good point to me about this oft-spake cliche in the arts and performing careers.

The reality is that desire and willingness to take risks are not always 100% correlated. Some people are just generally more risk-taking than others (or more stupid), which helps explain why there are thousands of people without a shred of talent or a prayer of making it that keep striving in the arts, not to mention people who keep half-assedly striving without any back-up plan. Meanwhile, there are probably at least a few people who really want a career in the arts but are too risk-averse.

For some reason, the absolute first thing I thought was: his palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms unsteady, there's vomit on his sweater already: mom's spaghetti.

Because, really, 'Encore' was his chance to blow.

'blow' as in 'blow up' duh.

"You have to want this so bad that you're willing to risk everything ..."

Yea, this sentiment is responsible for so much suffering and wasted time. As if it weren't really some mix of talent, appearance, charisma, experience, and contact-- but merely a competition of who's willing to put more stock in the haphazard.

one year passes...

This phrase just reeks of martyrdom to me.
