The reality is that desire and willingness to take risks are not always 100% correlated. Some people are just generally more risk-taking than others (or more stupid), which helps explain why there are thousands of people without a shred of talent or a prayer of making it that keep striving in the arts, not to mention people who keep half-assedly striving without any back-up plan. Meanwhile, there are probably at least a few people who really want a career in the arts but are too risk-averse.

Yea, this sentiment is responsible for so much suffering and wasted time. As if it weren't really some mix of talent, appearance, charisma, experience, and contact-- but merely a competition of who's willing to put more stock in the haphazard.
