Was there ever a time in which one could speak of a "hevilled" person? Was anyone ever gruntled or gusted? Where do these negative words come from?

JZ, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Why did this thread title make me think it would be about Boris Johnson?

(And why do I keep turning on the news and thinking it's him, when it's just that twat whose son got chucked out of Marlborough for having dodgy hair?)

JZ, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

find one etymology, you lazy person.

otm. the "molish" part of "demolish" is from the latin word for "to build." "remember" is from middle english and old french. < /dictionary.com>

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

also:

[Middle English discheveled, from Old French deschevele, past participle of descheveler, to disarrange the hair : des-, apart; see dis- + chevel, hair (from Latin capillus).]
