ok, well, basically, ANYTHING, any groups going now, any music scene, any cds i can buy when I'm in spain, any spanish version of the london improviser's orchestra, any decent spanish rock groups, any decent spanish pop, any elctronic stuff, any contemporary classical spanish composer?

I am half spanish, and every time i visit my family I wander about the town ew live in searching desperately for good record shops, a music scene of some sort, or just a radio station that doesn't play rubbish. It's got to be out there somewhere, but I never seems to find it. And yet when I go to ATP (especially ATP when shellac are on the lineup) I find whole groups of spanish people who have made it down to camber sands to see them, bands I like sometimes tour spain (although not generally my town) and there seems to be some interesting stuff going down in a twon about three hours drive from mine.

So basically, seeing as there are so many people who know so much stuff here, maybe some of you might be able to help me out, just suggest things or, anything.

They're a Madrid label run by one of Grabba Grabba Tape (who are a duo who sound like The Locust or Melt Banana and dress in excellent furry costumes)

I saw some people called Deluxe when I was at Bennicassim this summer. Liked them so much I bought a couple of records, one of which has an unintentionally amusing cover of There Is A Light... by the Smiths, where the Spanish singer struggles a little with the pronounciation of "ten tonne truck".

Seconding the recommendation of Elefant Records... Silvania is probably my fave band of the bunch. En cielo de océano outshoegazes the entire Creation contingent - later albums have more of an electronic/Seefeel quality to them.

Also check out Lagartija Nick, specifically the first album Hipnosis. Kinda reminds me of Love And Rockets (not surprising given their name). Later albums aren't quite as good, but are worth tracking down.

Los Planetas - The biggest indie band in Spain.
Maga - Poetic art-rock.
Migala - el alt.country.
Nacho Vegas - Singer, songwritery type.
Def Con Dos - Tittersome rap metal.

What town is it?

In eleven years living in Spain I never bought a single Spanish record, but I enjoyed Doctor Explosion live. 60s garage rock but with goose-stepping singer and other "zaniness".

Angel Ruiz, a fantastic solo banjo performer, if you like Bela and Tony Trischka you'll love Angel.

five months pass...
Can somebody please translate this for me. babelfish is frustratingly innacurate:

Yo soy rebelde por que el mundo me hizo asн
Por que nadie me ha tratado con amor
Por que nadie me ha querido nunca a oir.
Yo soy rebelde porque siempre sin razуn
Me negaron todo aquello que pedн
Y me dieron solamente incomprensiуn.
Y quisiera ser como el niсo aquel
Como el hombre aquel que es feliz
Y quisiera dar lo que hay en mi
todo a cambio de una amistad
Y soсar y vivir y olvidar el rencor
Y cantar y reнr y sentir solo amor.

Soy Rebelde (nordicskilla), Friday, 3 February 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Here's my quick very literal translation:

I'm a rebel because the world made me like this
Because no one has treated me with love
Because no one has ever wanted to hear me
I am a rebel because always for no reason
They denied everything I asked for
And only gave me incomprehension
And I would like to be like that
Like that happy man
And I would like to give all that there is in me
in exchange for a friendship
And ? and live and forget the resentment
And sing and laugh and feel only love.

I don't know socar or nico I'm afraid. Could they be Latin American Spanish?

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, the 7th line should be "And I would like to be like that ????" - whatever a 'nico' is.

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Thanks!

That is great.

It is Jeanette, or something like that. My wife sings it when she is feeling particularly rebellious. Nico and socar are probably mistakes, we think.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Saturday, 4 February 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

On my screen it's replacing letters with accents with other letters. Could nico and socar be niño and soñar?

(If that didn't work, replace the Cs with Ns with tildes)

aaah, that makes sense.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 4 February 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

So, "And dream and live and forget the resentment" and "And I would like to be that child".
