the founder of paypal is definitely well-placed to "pick up on resentment"

Maybe if everything they did didn't kick so much ass... for free?

Well, so was the CEO of Mapquest... at one point.

It's all about advertising. (Hooray for ad blockers.)

When did Google start releasing buggy products as final versions?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

haha they don't! they just keep everything as "beta" forever instead!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

This is all pretty interesting, given that everything that everyone knows Google for is now free, for end users. Ad money makes a difference of course. Perhaps it's possible for ad money to be able to sustain a future monolithic company such as Google -- or not(?)

I'm just wondering when Google will release something very well known (and i stress "very well known") that you and/or companies have to buy.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Or perhaps the question is if Google will ever release something you have to buy.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, so was the CEO of Mapquest... at one point.

I believe the guy who invented Mapquest is currently a war profiteer in Iraq after spending a brief stint in film school at usc. So he's alright.

(seriously)

It is very annoying, being here in Silicon Valley and seeing one by one your friends companies being bought out by Google. It's like, you're almost doomed to get sucked in...just like MSFT in the mid-90's. I wouldn't go so far as to say "Google is doing more damage to innovation in the Valley right now than Microsoft ever did", as someone in that article did. But they certainly are distorting things, and it's easy to think that the Valley would be a whole lot more fun if Google wasn't quite as monsterous as they are.

Really, there's so much VC money in the Valley right now that it's hard to say that Google is damaging new opportunities. But they are sucking up a lot of talent.
