Sacrifice

This is the thread where we talk about sacrifices we have made in our lives for the greater good, but still sort of regret making.

Have you given up friends, a job, possesions? Do you ever wonder if it was worth it?

Maybe we can help each other come to terms with our losses, and remind each other it was for the best. Sigh.

I try not to think about this sort of thing, or I'll just start weeping.

I gave up my pooch. That was three years ago now and not a day goes by when I don't miss him.

My ex and I were living with his parents for the last two years of our relationship - they had a big house with a large garden and lived across the road from woodland which the dog absolutely loved.

When I split up with my boyfriend and got a tiddly wee flat of my own, I realised it was for the best to leave the dog where he had company all day and a home he knew well.

I think it would have been selfish to have taken him with me and left him cooped up in my first floor flat while I worked all day but God, I fucking miss him.

It's A Wonderful Life is probably the best, extended example of this. george bailey's growing sense of frustration throughout the film, unable to see the good of what he's done because it's obscured by what he believes is his essential weakness and failure (but actually is the generosity of his spirit, and his courage), is very moving.

also, charlie brown:

I don't want him to be happy! I want him to suffer - like I have suffered!

I murdered a goat at dawn, in the woods, to prevent bad auspices. I can be pretty certain it worked.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I should at least try to answer this properly.

I've given up ridiculous amounts of quite important things - jobs, relationships, homes, my education, etc. - in the name of "music" or pursuit of creative goals or some kind of self expresssion (thinking this would be the cure for depression or whatever).

In the long-term, NO, it bloody well wasn't worth the sacrifice. And really, when it comes down to it, I should think "oh, but I've got these great experiences which I wouldn't trade for the world..." but actually, at the moment, I'm pretty much thinking "No, actually, really, I'd like those bits of my life back."

Ronan, can you murder a couple more goats for Kate and I?

Rumpie, Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

Please! I'm vegetarian. can you sacrifice a parsnip instead? Thanks.

Luckily, things have moved on in the past 2000 years, and we can make do with Quorn Not-Entrails for our auspicious omens.

Ronan, Goat-Murderer. There's a series in that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

murdering a goat is the new knifing a hobo

Sounds like an episode of Midsomer Murders at the very least.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

quick, we need Ronan-sacrificing-a-goat-in-slow-motion theme music.

Midgoater Murders.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I heart Midsomer Murders.

I am glad I am not the only one. But then again, I like just about any murder mysteries. I even watch CSI:BBC for christs sake...
