Reporting "abuse" (ie. lying) to ISP

When you send an email to an ISP's abuse email address, do they actually bother to look at it?

Think about it, you could report any kind of "abuse" if you want to fuck with someone:

"Dear ISP, the person at [this IP address] is distributing copyrighted material and child porn. Please seize their computer immediately. Thank you!"

hehe... it's not quite that trivial.

although, i wouldn't be surprised if some rookie outfit over-reacted to charges.

i'm sure that:
a) there has to be actual proof of abuse.
b) a formal complaint has to be backed up in writing at least. nobody's getting searched or dropped by just a casual email.

i don't think an ISP has the rights to seize somebody's computer..

Where's the proof? They'll have to seize the computer to get it!

See? It's a good plan, no?

Okay, what if I say they are plotting terr'ist activities?

Yes we do look at these, but they are filed away depending on proof of abuse (i.e. logs of scans or similar). Generally automated reports to abuse accounts are indicative of people with virii and/or spam bots. Reports of abuse with no proof and not originating from law enforcement are filed away until it is followed up with proof of malicious intent or by a law enforcement official.

If you want to cause mischief, you're best bet is to report it directly to law enforcement. They can be clueless enough to follow up on baseless accusations and can force ISPs to do the same.
