It is a mosque in Jerusalem with a golden dome. I think it one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, and as emblematic of Jerusalem as the Eifel Tower is of Paris. However, not everyone likes it, for the other day I saw some nutjob with a model of his proposed Third Temple in Jerusalem, designed to replace the Dome of the Rock and other buildings around it.

What do you think of the Dome of the Rock?

It'd be cooler if the dome could retract like the Toronto Dome.

Major problem: D of R is built on the supposed site of Solomon's temple (not sure how accurate the surveying is on that one, but that's what I've been told) and the end times cannot commence until the temple is rebuilt in Jerusalem.

When I was little and brainwashed and took things literally, I used to think it was a measure of God's Great Plan that someday, somehow, the D of R would be thrown down (perhaps by a fiery earthquake? it seems suitably divine) so that the temple could be replaced, Christ could come again, and we could all go unto a "new Heaven and a new Earth". Good times.

I would like to retract my wish for dome retraction.

most of the time I wish the whole "Holy Land" would just sink into the ocean, sparing all of us the insanity of the never-ending fight over who "owns" it.

I guess the Dome of the Rock is kinda pretty.

Not the Holy Land! Great citrus grows there!

Would be cooler if it were "Dome of the Roc" and a huge mythical bird nested there at sunset and preyed on the neighborhoods below.
