What do you think about Gary Old Man?

He's been dreadful in some films.

He was good as Robert Crumb in The Batman.

Despite being from New Cross, is that accent 4 real?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I would like to go on the record as saying I like Gary Old Man. When he's good.

awesome

but do you actually know what he looks like? I don't.

Like...when he's in bed reading a book?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

"Professor Little Old Man!"

"Littleoldman, Littleoldman..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

what are you on about now?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I barely know who he is...but people stop me on the street like twice a day to tell me I look like him.

pappawheelie II, Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

what are you on about now?

Some Mel Brooks fan you are!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I want to have Gary Oldman's babies. Seriously. I think he is absolutely brilliant, and when he is overacting and hamming it up and being rubbish I just find it endearingly hilarious (see: Air Force One).

I have only seen one interview with him, but it seems that his voice sounds NOTHING like any character he has ever played (even the British ones) and that he is very nice and quiet and polite and basically nothing like any of his characters.

Has anyone seen the movie he wrote/directed? I heard it was good.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 25 August 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

In person, he also appears to be a right-wing Tory. Lovely.

Batman Begins, True Romance, The Fifth Element, Basquiat, etc

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod, I cannot believe it took me this long to see this thread/catch on to what it was about.

I love, love, love Gary Oldman. So much to the point where my former housemate and I (where are ya, Kaliflwr? Surely you can't be ashamed to post of the glory of crush here) used to stay up for days watching his movies on acid, until we started the Church of the 13-Hour Blessed Gary Oldman Bra. (I'm not sure what this actually involved except pilgrimadges to various locations in our neighbourhood where some of his films had been shot.)

I've kind of lost track of him lately. But ah, so much good stuff (what other man could play Sid Vicious *and* Beethoven *and* Joe Orton?) that you forget the bad stuff (Ha-HEM State of (dis)Grace, Track 29, etc.)

Oh, and he's been naked more than anyone! I am going to go and poke Kaliflwr and see if I can get her to post.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Thursday, 25 August 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

his finest hour:

literally an actual hour i think too.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Thursday, 25 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

He was pretty good in Romeo Is Bleeding, tho he seemed to spend a lot of the film under or on top of Lena Olin, which might be why my recollection is favorable.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 25 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

True Romance? oooh, a white Rasta speaking patois, how funny. Just looked at his filmography and that's the most recent thing I saw him in.

"Church of the 13-Hour Blessed Gary Oldman Bra."

Holy crap, I'd forgotten about that! But then... acid. Yeah...

And the only reason I like State of (dis)Grace is because...

I am ashamed. ;)

But really now, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. How could you forget? Shame that he got typecast as "Crazy Evil Guy," because he's so much better in other types of roles.

I knew that would happen

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 25 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

That was a remnant of a post which said it was an irony that he was playing someone playing at being a gangsta badly, badly. I'm going to leave this alone now.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 25 August 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

I didn't necessarily like his performance as white rasta dude, but I stand by my assessment that True Romance is a Good American Movie That Has Gary Oldman In It.

My personal favorite role of his however was as EMANUEL JEAN-BAPTISTE ZORG in THE FIFTH ELEMENT, as campy as it was.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 August 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!

I am SO CONFUSED!!! I refuse to believe that it ever made sense...

(to the tune of that 808 State song with Barney Sumner on vocals)

Shame that he got typecast as "Crazy Evil Guy," because he's so much better in other types of roles.

Yes, see also Jared Harris. Too bad they couldn't star together in some kind of scenery chewing extravaganza... oh wait, they have! Lost In Space! (Why have I still never seen this? Oh right...)

State of Grace is such an unrelentingly bad film totally redeemed by the acting of the leads - Sean Penn and Gary Oldman, drunker than you've ever seen either before. (What was that line about "man, I gotta shower, I been in this shit for days, I'm tripping on my own smell" or was that one of us?)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Thursday, 25 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

When I was in acting school, he was my hero.

But yes, I guess Old Man is the part he was born to play.

“It’s a meaningless event. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is kidding you that something’s happening. They’re f*cking ridiculous. There’s nothing going on at all. It’s 90 nobodies having a wank. Everybody’s getting drunk, and everybody’s sucking up to everybody. Boycott the f*cking thing. Just say we’re not going to play this silly game with you anymore. The Oscars are different. But it’s showbiz. It’s all showbiz. That makes me sound like I’ve got sour grapes or something, doesn’t it?"
