What publications (or online sites) do gay men in New York use when they're looking for a boyfriend?

Any recommendations I could pass on to someone who is enquiring about this?

Do gay men even use online personals, or would it be better to suggest the club scene or whatever to him instead? I know nothing, but my helpful nature means I'd like to do what I can to answer his query.

(This was a query on an elsewhere board. I don't think he's trolling, but for someone who has posted a picture of an extremely good-looking thirty-year-old guy, I find it difficult to believe he can't find any love action in NY. Hmm)

Has anyone tried advertising in gay personals?

Experiences? Successes? Problems?

Is he jewish? If so, I reckon I know exactly where he can get lucky :)

"Do gay men even use online personals"

are you kidding? I think we use 'em more than anyone else. Some of us don't like bars, and it's the only other reliable option for meeting a bunch of guys you know ahead of time are gay.

"Has anyone tried advertising in gay personals? Experiences?"

oh god yes....

"Successes?"

if you count meeting, on average, a new guy every month for the past 5 years, then yes.

"Problems?"

whatever that chemistry thing is that 2 people do or don't have, I've found it's impossible to predict before meeting in person, no matter how good the match may look on paper. So the whole thing is kinda random (read: bad odds).

I use AOL.

I used the Village Voice's personals back in 1999 or so. Out of the three serious inquiries I recieved, I eventually found out that Potential Boyfriend #1 was dating Potential Boyfriend #2 and that PB #2 was good friends with PB #3.

i think gay guys usually use the internet just to find someone to fuck. and they go to bars/clubs basically to find someone to fuck while on crystal meth. not sure where 'boyfriend' fits in in all this. i would like to know too

Usually, though, I try finding someone to fuck who is ALSO a potential boyfriend.

I never trust the men who claim to be looking for "boyfriends" on such sites. Or at least not the ones who are way too up front about it. "Looking for LTR: Are you the one?" = stay far, far away.

The lgbt center (link) organises events specifically for meeting other gay men -I went to one and it was pretty good.

Also, dating agencies might be worth looking into.
