Hahahah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 August 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

There's really a real place called TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M.???!!!

Huk-L's Sweet Strawberry, Friday, 26 August 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Wait, how serious are you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 August 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Serious like a Canadian.

Huk-L's Sweet Strawberry, Friday, 26 August 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Well done. (And the answer is yes.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 August 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I knew there was a Keifer Sutherland (another serious Canadian) movie with that title, but I always thought, y'know...well, maybe...but it seemed shockingly REAL to see it in a dateline like that.

Huk-L's Sweet Strawberry, Friday, 26 August 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

There used to be a guy who kept sex-slaves in Elephant Butte.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Omigod Ned Raggett is like TOTALLY TWELVE YEARS OLD.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 26 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Truth or Consequences, N.M., is named after the 1950s TV show.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I mean sorry but "Butte looks like Butt" is like only a notch funnier than "Lake Titicaca." Except when referring to Crested Butte as "Crusted Butt," that's classic.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 26 August 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Note to mods: Please fix spelling mistake in thread title.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

And it's true, the label's name is Elefant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

"Sure, that will happen, Garth - when police recover a man's body from Elephant Butte!"

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

i'm more amused by the name of the local body of water.

"Dude, you'll never guess where we're going waterskiing today!"

kingfish 'doublescoop' moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 26 August 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

I think somewhere in the Southwest I came across a Withered Butte.
Yeah Truth or Consequences --- T or C if you're nasty --- was named as part of publicity stunt for that show IIRC.

oops (Oops), Friday, 26 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

But at least they're not as humiliated as Pets.com, Utah.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

But wouldn't EVERY headline about that town be funny? Like "New shopping plaza to open in Elephant Butte," or "President to make campaign stop in Elephant Butte" or "Elephant Butte shrinking, according to 2000 Census"

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

haha I grew up near EB and this thread title totally didn't scan as anything other than factual--my first thought was, oh, more victims from that sex-slave case that like NOBODY paid attention to even though it was Dahmeresqe in scale?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Not totally relevant, but there's a town in (I THINK?) New Mexico called Salsipuede, which means "Leave if you can"

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

But at least they're not as humiliated as Pets.com, Utah.

Or C on T, Wisconsin.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Captain Kangaroo to thread!

Going thru Wyoming you pass by Pilot Butte, go on through Black Butte, and finally, after hours and hours of nothing and rocks, you get to Fossil Butte. By then you're too numb to care.... (this is all true)

pepektheassassin (pepektheassassin), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

A trip to Dildo, Newfoundland may stimulate your interest again.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

What's interesting is that Huk-L didn't mention that there' also a Pilot Butte just outside Regina. There's also nearby communities like Elbow and Eyebrow. It's like the plane the pilot was flying exploded and spread his body parts around southern Saskatchewan.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

more about dahmeresque elephant butte sex slaves, please

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure they ever figured out for sure how many victims there were, I heard anywhere from 6 to 14. It was a man and wife, they had like a torture trailer set up and made videotapes, it was horrible stuff. Google it if you want to know the details, it hit a few national outlets but I couldn't believe how little attention it got.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 28 August 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Here's a Maxim article about it. Pretty awful stuff.

And yeah, like teeny said, it's amazing more wasn't reported on it. The guy in Buffalo got more attention than this did.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 28 August 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Australia has some great loony town names - Emu Bottom, Woodenbong, Humpty Doo.... Canberra has some great suburbs including Downer and Bruce (cos they name 'em after prime ministers and things y'see).
