Tell Me About Anawim

Smart people and big brains of ILX -I have a query for you. What is anawim?
I am taking a course this semester, Comparative Lit: Good and Evil, East and West.
The last part of the course description says "Contemporary issues of nuclear war, holocaust, AIDS, abortion, marginal persons, anawim, and unwanted children."
Please enlighten me now!

Supposedly the plural of an "Old Testament Hebrew" (as opposed to just ancient Hebrew?) word. I'm finding two interpretations: "the poor of God (a remnant totally dependent upon Him)" and "the lost and forgotten ones". Seems to be used mostly by Christian (Catholic) relief organizations and communities.

Looks synonymous with marginal persons to me.

Thanks! That makes more sense, in the list/context.
My Google search found anawim as people of faith who have been kicked out.Like homosexuals who are "Out"- but are priests. Or nuns.
very interesting.
