Can anybody tell me what is going on outside my door?

Well, it's 9:04pm and I was finally allowed into my house by a police escort. I came home from work and found the SWAT team on the corner and my entire neighborhood taped off. It seems there was a hostage situation all day long on Ocean Blvd around the corner from me, which ended in someone being shot. I haven't seen the news and don't know if it even made the news. The cops were going to make us go to a shelter for the night because we live in the "crime scene" but a woman with a baby and me finally got them to relent and let the people who lived on my street, which is not where the action was, go home escorted. What a night. The people who live around the corner on ocean have to go to a shelter, not because there is any danger any more, but because it is an investigation area. The neighbors are having a party in their backyard, because now we are all trapped. I don't even know if they'll let us out in the morning to go to work--maybe escorted again? Did anyone see this on the news and can tell me what is going on? (This is in Long Beach, CA)

Hang on Orbit, I'm checking on KNX-AM - there is no local news about it now on TV....Katrina has got the top news headline (of course!)

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit!

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Thanx Luna - Clearly, I'm slow to the rescue.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I was at work when this was evidently happening.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Wiggy your efforts are appreciated!

It's on channel 9 rt now

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know what the hell was going on. There are cops everywhere.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

Good grief, what a horrid thing to have to deal with! after a day at work, a Monday at that, to come home to so much turmoil! Poor you! Get in, bolt the door and decompress!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Wiggy the first things I did were 1. Call my mom 2. Get a glass of wine and 3. look on the web for news but I couldn't find the story. They made us wait behind the yellow tape for hours. It's kind of surreal to open my front door to a full on police barricade.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

surreal is exactly the term that I nearly typed last post. I live just a block away from where Nicole Simpson lived when she died.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

They took away the SWAT van and the mobile crime lab, but they replaced them with lots of cop cars and motorcycles (I just peeked out my front door). It looks like they are settling in for the night. I hope I don't sound callous, but if the guy has already been shot, why is the neighborhood still looking like a police state? Did they do that at your house after the Simpson thing?

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Are you ok? Was mom helpful?

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

yes, and worse yet, because of the notoriety of the players, the media circus continued for well, many months after. Be prepared for the media vans and satellite trucks blocking your exit TO work in the AM. This will surely be early AM local news bait, to catch everyone who missed it tonight.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm ok. Right now my concerns are practical--can I go to work in the morning? By what route? But that's how I am. When stuff is happening I'm pretty practical, I only get upset later. I don't know if I should even be upset, I mean it's not like I'm in danger or anything. It's just, well a little unreal to be told you can't move freely in and out of your own house. How long will this go on, is my next thought. To be truthful, I haven't even processed the human element of the tied-up woman hostage and the guy getting shot yet. I don't know if that means I'm a freak, but it's just a little, er, tense in the neighborhood.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could go and stay in LA tonight but it's a little late to bug my friends for a couch.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

I fear this will not be over in the morning. They have parked what looks like a mobile headquarters trailer outside. Oh dear.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

btw Thanks Luna and Wiggy. It looks like tomorrow will be an adventure.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

I heard some more details from the neighbors. The apt manager found the paper outside the victim's door that said "Call 911" and looked in the and saw a woman with a bag over her head. Then the mgr called the cops. They guy threatened to kill her, and dragged her into the street with the bag on her head, and the police shot the guy. At least that is the neighborhood gossip about it. I didn't hear any of these details on the news though. It sounds pretty gruesome. I will never understand what drives people to such cruelty.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

how about taking the essentials and going to a nearby hotel for the night? S/B something clean and affordable for the nite near the Airport, right? Don't think twice about the incident of earlier- you weren't there and can't process it. It's not making you a hard or heartless person, just human.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

People aren't human anymore I am afraid. Just desperate for som many reasons we can't begin to fathom.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

Wiggy you are a gem *mwah!*
I'm off to pack and leave this behind!

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

Tip for "jetting" thru the line in and out without the wait - have your picture ID showing your home address clearly on it and keep it handy to flash at PD w/o a lot of fumbling for it. They want to keep the lookeyloos out of the neighborhood, so for at least a few hours in the AM the won't allow any access in or out unless you can show proper current and valid ID that you belong there. The rest of the folks just get sent to a turn around area and given the detour. If you have to be at work at a certain hour, it might behoove you to call ahead and explain the situation and buy your self an extra hour to arrive at work. Then if you get thru the roadblock with ease, go hit the library coffe house and have a nice cuppa and read the paper and mentally prep for work! (This would be my strategy)

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I never watch TV news, but in the last couple of days I've made an exception because of the hurricane. Is it always this violent out there? Murdered bodies strewn all over the Boston/Providence area. Sheesh! Must be sunspots or barometric anomalies making everyone go wacky. So somehow this story fits right in. Oh! And my son went off to find an apartment near his western MA college and returned home with a black eye! Egads! The WORLD'S GONE MAD!!!!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

AND I spilled coffee all over my shirt just now by tipping the cup BEFORE it had gotten to my mouth!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

what is his western ma college? probably not the same as mine, but i'm curious. forgive me if i've asked and you've mentioned it before.

good luck on keeping out of the insanity, orbit. what a strange thing to come home to.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Mt. Wachusett Community College, way cheaper tuition than a 4 year college, but there's the lodging problem. People aren't exactly eager to rent to college kids, especially college kids with black eyes.
Especially kids whose mothers are poxy fules for trying to send this message.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Maria. It's all better now. The neighborhood looks like nothing happened. I'm reminded of that Clash song "Somebody Got Murdered".

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Orbit, I am glad that it all worked out ok.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

Thanks! It's funny, the way it had all disappeared when I came from work was eerie in its own way!
