Its my birthday next week, and I will be 32. Because 3+2 = 5 I am having five events to celebrate. Hubris your name is Pete. They are as follows;

Monday 5th September: Meal, in Crouch End environs, (Probably the Boom Bar for Crocodile tail eating). Book now if you wants to come.

Tuesday 6th September:(Actual birthday) PUB: Downstairs at the Glasshouse Stores
This is actually Cis's party as well as mine and already has its own, slightly unloved thread:
Cis (& Pete's) Birthday FAP : 6th September , you know where etc etc

Wednesday 7th September: I shall be seeing Thai action movie, Born To Fight, probably at the UGC Shaftesbury Avenue. Probably around 6:30.

Thursday 8th September: Karaoke (number potentially limited due to Boxiness of nature) ? somewhere in Soho. E-mail if you want to be involved.

Friday 9th September: Club Seal in Islington, drinking in the Pakenham Arms beforehand from 6-ish.
---------------

Come to one, come to all, who knows it may even be followed up by a trip to watch Barnet play Leyton Orient on Saturday. (3 x 2 = 6 after all). Love to see you all.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

I feel it would be better if you had organised some kind of birthday tour. Perhaps next year.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I like the idea of that...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Grr. Er, I mean happy birthday!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I can't help when my birthday is Andrew...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

This all sounds fantabulous and I will get drunk from afar.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Karaoke!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I KNOW.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm a going to have to book the karaoke, but so it is written...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

if you fail to book the karaoke, on thursday nights there's also the callaghan's bar in regents hotel (on glasshouse street) that does karaoke! GIANT screen. and crowds of hundreds! it's mental.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

i still think is better with being PROPER GREAT BRITISH KARAOKE, rather than this sitting in a box nonsense...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

(I may investigate Callaghan's this Thursday).

That is because you are a performance whore CSS.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

i would like to come to Karaoke so long as Pete promises not to use his paedovoice.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

If anyone's still able to move on Friday you can all come in for free. I want to try and break the guestlist record set on Colette's birthday.

Don't think karaoke will be doable but Tuesday is a definite.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Okay, anyone who wants to come on Monday, Speak beofre lunchtime tomorrow or forever hold your peace (piece). Venue will be the Boom Bar in Crouch End, from about 8-ish (check when I have booked). They do good SouthA frican food and it is therefore your opportunity to eat crocodile and springbok.

I may scope some public karaokes tonight before drifting down the box route. If boxing I will need to know soon as well (number may get limited to 10/12)

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

3^2 = 9. You big slacker, you've got four more events to plan.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

not to mention 3!^2=36

(and we're not even going to go to (3!^2)!)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Wot, no elephant biltong? Not proper Seth Efrikan cuisine, then!

(Will they Vrai a pineapple?)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

box box box!

spontine (cis), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Okay, have tried to book Box Box Box, but all the Central London Box Box Boxes I know are booke dout for their big rooms. As I already have twelve people expressing an interest I am considering a different plan. Namely Zyrus on Farringdon Road, a karaoke cocktail bar, which has 12,000 songs (yes, including J-Pop) and never seems very full when I go past.

Does anyone know anything super extra bad about this place before I name it as the venue (with probably a quick couple of beers in a cheap pub before).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

"ZG, you see, plays happy host to unruly parties looking to shamelessly showcase their lung capacity during drink-fuelled karaoke sing-offs."

2 out of 5 stars in ViewLondon, but clearly they hate fun.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like us. (frankly the alternative is the Pint Pot which may not even let us sing).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Argh! (older ILXors only)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

"ZG, you see, plays happy host to unruly parties looking to shamelessly showcase their lung capacity during drink-fuelled karaoke sing-offs."

WOW!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

and haha omg andrew!!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

REVIEWED BY BECKY LUC@S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????????

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

If Becky Lucas hates it, we're there!!!!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah by the sounds of it, this is the only pub in London that's absolutely guaranteed to have no BL presence.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

are there really 12000 songs?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

SO it says. I fdon't think there are that many songs IN THE WORLD.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 September 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

will you be singing 5ive to celebrate your 3+2 birthday?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 September 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I have at least five times as many songs here in this room. Then again, they are not organised for karaokeing, and I don't have a mic or anything, so it's no good your planning to come here instead.

I might come, if I feel comparatively okay. I'll be at the Tuesday thing at the very least.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Just an update.
a) The first night went well. I ate crocodile AND wildebeest,

b) tomorrow nights film will be at 6:20 in the UGC Shaftesbury Avenue. Meet in the foyer.

c) Thursday is at Zyrus Genesys 102-108 Clerkenwell Road. Probably get there for 8 for singing, and have a few pints in the Crown Tavern on Clerkenwell Green to fortify oneself from about sixish.

Friday's plans don't change a jot.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

happy birthday pete!
*clink clink*

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I celebrate from afar!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

hope you're having a v. happy birthday!

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

It's now not certain there'll be a Seal on Friday, due to a number of reasons too tedious to go into here. I'll keep you guys posted though.

If it's not on, I'm going to Fabric.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Blimey. The first time in ages I actually considered going to Seal... but then again, I've had pretty nongood experiences the past few times I've gone so it's probably for the best. :-(

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Well, whatever happens, the pub is open til 1 so that's always a possibility. Come to the pub anyway Kate.

Tonight is as above if you are still keen on singing.
A slight mix up with punters meant I missed last nights films. I may be going to see it this afternoon at 4pm instead if people are interested (shockingly it is only on release for a week, though I might see if the Prince Charles are picking it up).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

Not tonight, as it's a schoolnight. But maybe tomorrow.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Does that mean it won't be on on sunday?

spontine (cis), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

born to fight that is, not other hitherto unknown birthday-related insanities.

spontine (cis), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

Pete, as a matter of interest, do you know how many people tend to attend this karaoke night? I always get sad when there are several hundred drunk secretaries and brokers clamouring for the mic and I only get one song in :(

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

Seems quite a few of us (15/20), but last time I walked past said ZG place it was pretty empty. They do karaoke all the time so early doors we should get some in. I too share your dismay if only one is in, but I think the general turnover ought to be better than say the Pint Pot.

There should still be a Karaoke Box night I guess for the absolute exhibitionists amongst us.

Cis, from what I can see, its not on on Sunday. I have e-mail the Prince Charles to see if they are picking it up in a couple of weeks.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

I will be going but not singing. Unless I get very drunk. And they have Jilted John.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

i'm sure out of 12,000 jilted john will be one.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to get bevvied and sing loads tonight. watch out.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

oooooh... sorry Pete but I might not make it tomorrow night because I have just been invited on a BAT WALK!!!!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Is that walking over the rooftops wearing a cape?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

No, it's walking through Tower Hamlets looking at bat preserves.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

i think fabric tickets guarentee entry if you turn up before midnight. or that's what my ticket says anyway...

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Are you dropping in on the pub tonight then, Jill?

This is the Packenham this evening, right? I'm not sure if I'm up for Fabric yet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, lor, what a night last night.

Zyrsu Genesys must be a money laundering den. The second time I have done that remarkably slow version of Immigrant Song now. In London & New York.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

best money laundering place evah!!

i said i would get bevvied and sing loads and i did omg.

i was feeling a little rough this morning, and i got to work and this girl went "ken are you hungover today?" haha. sonned.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

and 12000 songs: 6000 of them in chinese!!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

I liked the bit where Ken actually did one of the Chinese songs and the Chinese woman who occasionally walked around the bar looking like a potential triad moll smiled at him cheekily.

I also liked the bit where we all fell silent as the girl from the rival table did a Cher turn that would have walked Stars in their Eyes. Astonishing.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

What a rum place.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

We really need to have another Official ILx Karaoke FAP before long.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

the only downside to this place is the price of the beer. the lack of compere is irksome, except to me and pete obviously, who are born showmen (haha).

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Not just the beer - I got charged a fiver for an alcopop (serves me right).

Tom (Groke), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

"Oh Randy, you came and gave without taking, but I banned your IP..."

Tom on Bacardi Breezers = extra moving rendition of 'Russian' (sic)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

those "hilarious" lyrics in full...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

there's BIG NED in the recliner!!!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Amazing Randy to respond with equally moving rendition of Lionel Richie's classic "HELLO DERE."

(xpost x 2)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

so, is there seal? or not?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

haha if you think the alcopop was expensive you should have got the whiskey!!! (i forgot how much it was now - although it did mean i get to watch the bar girl struggle with the wax sealing of a new bottle of makers.. i wonder how long it's been sitting there unopened, and indeed if it's ever to be opened again.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

For it to be opened again they'll need customers, and I wouldn't guarantee that happening again!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

lol

it's the karaoke box that doesn't require booking. also the place was deceptively small.

or deceptively big, with that whole downstairs bar area that is in fact a glorified waiting area for the toilet!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

so, is there seal? or not?

I'm assuming 'not' for the time being, but I'll let you know. Something to do with a band pulling out I think.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

do you need an emergency replacement band?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Red Bulldozers and Shimuras double bill! Weh hoo!

Oh wait, one of the Shimuras is in NYC, no can do. Bah. Bats it is then.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

i can sing in a girly voice

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

He can you know. He did it last night.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but can he *dance* like Frances?

Don't answer that...

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I might come along tonight, unless I get a late call to see my GP. I won't be clubbing later, I don't think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

where's this packenham arms place?

boo! i wanted to dance at club seal!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

London's trendy Clerkenwell

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

fancyapint isn't working for me...i searched for the name and got nothing, and now i'm just getting 404 errors on every page. hmm.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

It's round the corner from the Calthorpe Arms, on the corner of calthorpe and phoenix place.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Not working for me either now. Anyway, its on Pakenham Street in Clerkenwell. Probably that stray C that was bothering you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I've just been handed a beer from the office fridge. Oh lord.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

what kind of a place do you work?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

One with a giant Big-style piano mat, for Pete's sake.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I have a feeling that beers from the office fridge may appear for me later too. They are spoiling us with small comforts right now because of the small staff/ insane deadlines week of hell. (i have worked nearly 60 hours this week, I may not stay in the pub that long.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

They'll definitely appear for me, as they do every Friday at about 5.30!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Update - wine now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

happy birfday, by the way.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

you are all tempting me to start drinking! as i am sat alone at home, that might not be all that sensible.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

You must have a decent bottle of gin or similar knocking about...

Mind you, we are still on subsidised lattes. I am wired.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I shall be there very early doors, just in case some of you are staying away from the pub until later because you don't want to drink alone. I finish at 5.30 and it will take me approx 1.6 minutes to get there, less if it's raining then.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

you should steal that piano mat for pete's present, matt.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I've got a Tracker bar in my drawer. I think *I* win.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Nobody's given me free beer from the office fridge yet but I suspect it's because there's no fridge. The water in the bottle on my desk was free though.

robster (robster), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

nothing is free in this place

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

I want booze. But I'm still on that sobriety binge. I wonder if I'll get some booze post-bats. Though I better have some free coffee if I'm going to have the energy for bat-walking.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

There are barrels and barrels of beer downstairs at my work, but I am setting an example to the staff (hic).

Hmm, Batnbooze Cake.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Our office fridge has milk and peanut butter in it :(

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Those are the two ingredients for PEANUT BUTTER MILK!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty late now, but I just realised that it might have been useful to put in the thread title that there were drinks tonight....

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

I won't start on what's in our fridge, never mind the freezer and dry store

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)
