Who's going? I need to know.

Yes, I have heard of pizza (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Who is Doug Pray? The name sounds really familiar.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh I see (on graffitti.) Yeah well I might go. I saw the preview to Thumbsucker yesterday. It looked okay.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I'll be at the Toronto one for sure.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Are there times up anywhere? Is some of the stuff in the middle of the day.

Alex - let me know if you want to book for anything.

Yes, I have heard of pizza (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Doug Pray the guy who did that Scratch documentary?

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

yes

Yes, I have heard of pizza (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

sorry, missed that first time around.

Yes, I have heard of pizza (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Hmmm...

Okay then.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I saw the preview to Thumbsucker yesterday. It looked okay.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Resfest has again suceeded in its primary aims of bringing us the latest in cutting edge film and design, and reminding Alex In SF that a lot of people listen to bad indie music with horrible vocals.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

"Funny you should ask, the inspiration for this short film came from a dream..."

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

"After 9/11, how could I NOT make a film like this?"

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

The RES set up bugs me. They keep their corporate synergy thing on the quiet, so the magazine tries to act like it's promoting this indie/progressive/etc. culture and it's quite often just an excuse to push Palm Pictures movies and DVDs.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Their main sponsors this year are Canon (okay) and Audi (wha?).

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I have no problem with Resfest having corporate sponsorship (most of the films they show are comissioned by ad and design agencies after all), I was just pissed off to see that the evil Academy of Art University had a presence there. But that's personal.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Adam, I really like your new name!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Thank you very much.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

so what was worth seeing? i'd like to avoid a 4th year of sheer disappointment? can't...giive up... too...much...po...tent..ial...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

milo, maybe you should go launch your own magazine about indie filmmakers and indie designers except without any corporate backing or sponsorship! anyway be sure to let us all know how it goes!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

We just saw the tail end of Mike Mills talking and the first Shorts compilation, which was patchy. I'd maybe only go for the shorts. I'd seen most of the videos. Some of the panels looked kind of interesting. The Ginga movie looked pretty good. I don't care enough about grafitti to want to see the Doug Pray thing.

xp easy, boyz

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen any of this year's programming yet (at least, not through resfest), but the traktor retrospective looks pretty essential. they're fantastic.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I forgot about that! They are good, but again, I have seen their reel too much to want to pay to see it again.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Mark, please read what I wrote: my problem isn't with the 'corporate backing or sponsorship,' it's with the shadiness of how they handle things. If they were up front about their motivations - for the RES mag to act (in part) as a catalogue of upcoming Palm releases, then okay. But they don't - I don't think I've ever even seen them mention that Palm's owner publishes RES.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough, but this is really a teeny tiny world we're talking about. I think you'd have to expect some crossover/conflict of interest. I mean, it's PALM PICTURES, not some sinister international cartel of mind-fucking double agents.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Close enough, man.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

milo lots of magazines are owned by other companies. i agree that it'd be nice if res was more forthcoming on subjects where there were ostensible conflicts of interest, but i think its a bit much to act like its interest in the indie culture is nothing more than a giant corporate front.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

adam what did you think of adam smith's film, "what comes up"? what about oury & thomas' "overtime"?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

A lot of magazines are owned by other companies... magazines that don't proclaim themselves heirs of some kind of DIY/progressive/indie (dare I say, even anti-corporate) culture.

I do believe that RES's interest in DIY filmmaking and so on is entirely a 'corporate front.' There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, I just don't like them avoiding the issue up front. If they were to state their biases and intentions up front, I might have more sympathy with the magazine. (The content sucks, so I'd never buy another issue anyway.)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I like "What Comes Up?". The best was probably "Winner Take Steve" though. And I would just like to say that I was SHOCKED to discover that Joanna Newsome is even worse than Polyphonic Spree! GOOD GOD HOW CAN ANYONE LISTEN TO HER CATERWAULING?!?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I saw the preview to Thumbsucker yesterday. It looked okay.

-- Alex in SF (clobberthesauru...), August 30th, 2005.

Yeah, I was clearly wrong there. Wow.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

ok well, next time i see him, i'll be sure to tell the resfest programmer not to bother watching hundreds of pieces every month! why bother when he could just email palm for his agenda.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

also, wtf dude, res talks about commercials half the time. what exactly is anti-corporate about that?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

"winner take steve" is great! jared hess has a lot to answer for, though. if i see one more color-muted, quirky knockoff director's reel... arg.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

"Flesh" was easily one of the worst things I've ever seen. "Le Grand Sommeil" was also fantastic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen either of those. i hope "flesh" isn't as dumb as its still makes it seem.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

aside from the rest of the shorts programs, "cut and paste" and "triple threat" look pretty interesting. francois vogel is great and i am really curious to see more of nagi noda's work.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

It's dumber.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

The one Triple Threat dude that you didn't mention is an Art Center grad! Eep!

adam what did you think of adam smith's film, "what comes up"? what about oury & thomas' "overtime"?

Both great!

Flesh is actually worse than the stills (in Res?) make it look. It's horrible.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Also - yeah big up Pic Pic Andre and Le Grand Sommeil!!

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Actually, now I'm sort of sad I'm not going tonight! :(

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Neither am I going to see JACKSON AND HIS COMPUTER BAND

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

i am so disappointed in you. maybe you're not who i thought you were.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

also, #3 is a complete unknown to me -- he could be rad!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm just this guy.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

The Raftman's Razor was also pretty good, I thought. I think we've mentioned all the good ones now.

The bad

Flesh
Jane Lloyd

Also I thought 11:59 was kind of dull.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I want to see Ginga a lot. I may trek down and see that on Sunday.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Is it all over?

I sort of love and hate reading Res at the same time. I enjoy a lot of the things they cover, but their whole philosophy seems aimed at the type of people they profile in their magazine - globetrotting "creative" folk with trust funds. I don't really begrudge any of these people their lifestyles, but it sort of hurts to read about all these new HD cameras and software plugins when you can't even afford a fucking sandwich. I suppose that's my burden.

Also, I suppose I did trot halfway across the globe just to get where I am now so maybe I am sort of a deficient example of this stereotype.

FiFi (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

they are definitely guilty of perpetuating an illusion of creative revolution

the aesthetic of that magazine is such that its very exciting in small doses but hugely disenchanting in continuity

fun/depressing exercise: scan a three year old back issue of res -> what are tomorrow's brightest doing today?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for not calling me out on the whole self-pity thing.

Mark, I've missed you.

FiFi (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for not calling me out on the whole self-pity thing.

like recognizes like -- fuck a december!

hi adam! how's apps?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Hi!

Apps - Two down, two to go.

I am aware of the attendant irony in asking you this after my globe-trotting rant above but...are you in London now?

FiFi (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

haha

FiFi (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

no.. not yet.

april/may/june? polish consulate willing.

where did you apply?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

USC, UCLA... and now Art Center College of Design and London Film School.

FiFi (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

You are basically to blame for the first of those! :)

I had to take the GRE!

FiFi (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

thats amazing! the guy i know from usc is now shadowing directors on alias episodes. i don't know what he scored on his gre though.

when are the london apps due?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

No set date!

Now here's some news!:

The Chemical Brothers' musicvideo for "Galvanize" by Adam Smith scored the inaugural Jury Prize at Resfest on Tuesday. The alternative film fest gave special recognition to Dougal Wilson's video for Dizzee Rascal's "Dream" and Shakedown's "Love Game" by Wilfrid Brimo.

Resfest honors short and feature films, musicvideos and docus from independent filmmakers. Over the years, the film fest has served as a launching point for Hollywood helmers such as Spike Jones, Jonathan GlazerJonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn and Michel GondryMichel Gondry, who preemed two new works.

Fest's audience winner for short film was "Dimmer," by tyrotyro helmer Talmage Cooley. Cooley also took home the newly added Special Jury Award. The Jury Prize went to "Raftman's Razor" by Keith Bearden.

"With the addition of our Jury Awards, even more of the innovative filmmakers at RESFEST will be recognized for their outstanding art," said fest director Jonathan Wells. "Significantly, our awards recognize not only short filmmaking, but the emerging field of design films and the artistry of musicvideo, whereas most musicvideo awards tend to celebrate the musician."

More than 200 films entered this year's traveling fest, which has been growing continuously since 1999. Prizes were awarded Dec. 13 at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles.

The winners are…

AUDIENCE WINNER: BEST SHORT
"Dimmer" directed by Talmage Cooley

JURY WINNERS: SHORTS
Best Short:
"Raftman's Razor" directed by Keith Bearden

Special Jury Award (Tie):

Klaus Darko (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

The 'Galvanise' video is really dull (I'm just bored of 'dance off' videos). I'd like to see the Shakedown one though.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Is that the one with the robots?

All Chemical Brothers videos seem to blur into one..except for Star Guitar or whatever.

Klaus Darko (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

no it's the one with the capoiera kids in clown make up or whatever.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

Did you go to Resfest London?

Klaus Darko (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 December 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

i forgot to go this year :(
