So there's this 80s movie that I can't remember the name of. Some teenagerish young man comes under the care of an old martial arts expert who then imparts his knowledge to this young man.

At one point there's a fight at the Statue of Liberty (I think), and the old man escapes by running over wet cement. Later on, they infiltrate the villain's forest hideout and lock someone in a gas chamber, and at the end the old man runs across the lake and jumps in a boat. The old man was also able either to dodge bullets Matrix-like or to catch bullets, I forget. Also, I think he becomes addicted to soap operas and sets up an obstacle course in his apartment for the kid to work on.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of anyone that was in it, and I think the title was someone's name, if that helps at all. Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?

This is Alex In SF's favorite movie. I believe Ice Cube plays the zombie yakuza overlord.

Repo Man

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

this sounds vaguely like Remo Williams but Fred Ward wasn't young then.

the best is the scene on the wonder wheel.

Remo:" Unarmed and dangerous" it was called when I rented it. the little chinese man could seduce women by tapping on thier wrists in tandem with their heartbeats. Never worked for me though.

Remo Williams the Adventure Continues! Continued from where? It confused me so much I didn't see it.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

ditto "Max Dugan Returns" which I assumed was a sequel to something before my 11 year old frame of reference.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

what the fuck it was actually "the adventure begins". I am high, ignore me.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

although it seems Remo Williams lived on to continue his adventure in a 2001-produced independent sequel w/ no Fred Ward and maybe made in someone's basement

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

not to be confused with REAM-O WILLIAMS which was another kind of movie

Repo Man

It's always good to bring up Repo Man. Not the right film in this case, but still good to mention it. Everyone should watch this movie.

It's funny what your memory does to you. When I was thinking about this yesterday I could have sworn that Fred Ward's character was played by either C. Thomas Howell or Matt Dillon.

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

SIDE OUT

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I said Repo Man, because it was obviously Remo Williams, and I didn't want to seem like I was being obvious.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

It's basd on an old Marvel comic book called "the Destroyer" iirc

It's actually based on a series of books by Warren Murphy (the Marvel series was based on them too)

I thought I remembered reading one of those books as a kid. Is the sensei character Korean, or did he have an abiding hatred of Koreans?

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

> isn't the crucifix flick called static?
