I want to run google earth, on the grounds it sounds cool - are there other, non-microsoft directx sources?

I know these people are, in the end, more powerful than I.

Grief implies death, yes, but I fear you are exaggerating.

Isn't there an OpenGL implementation? (Or does that require directx anyway?)

There is such a thing. I do not understand what it is, nor do i understand what direct x is, save for that i've found it useful in the past.

OpenGL is a different API to DirectX, i.e. it's a different interface as well as implementation. The application you want to run would have to have been written to OpenGL to work.

I think GoogleEarth runs in DirectX and in OpenGL, and will default to opengl on older video cards that cant support it in dirX. Thats what happened on my install (on a laptop with shared RAM vid memory).

Does the Directx download require Genuine Advantage validation?

is directx better than opengl these days? four or five years ago it wasn't, but I wonder if things have changed (note: I never ever play video games now)
