i just switched to mac for my first time and i tried downloading both media player classic for my .avi files and winamp because i prefer it to itunes but when i tried opening them a message came up saying "There is no default application to open ______". Anyone have any suggestions for what to do/get?

videolan.org VLC media player is the business for most media files, it does so much more than QT player. See also MPlayerOS X but that is tedious to set up.

select one file, choose "Get Info" from the File menu. In the "Open with" section choose the application you want to open them with. click the "Change all" button to apply this to all documents of the same "type"

EasyWMA will convert WMA to MP3, and VLC as Ed sez for WMV

Also bear in mind that you can download Windows Media Player for Mac, too. Just in case.

It's a bit of a dog though and videolan works for most windows media files.

Basically, wmv is crapola on macs - jumping around the file sucks on WMP and VLC.

I have vast hate for people who use Windows Media files. Why pick a format that locks out Linux (etc), Mac, thin internet terminals, etc.
