Ten days ago I was in the town of Ramallah. What country was I in?
Before the first world war, Ramallah was in the Ottoman Empire, I think part of Syria (a geographical area, if not a country).
After the first world war, it was in the British Mandate of Palestine.
After 1948 it was in territory annexed to the Kingdom of Jordan (I'm not sure how internationally recognised this annexation was).
After 1967, it was occupied by Israel, but not in territory formally annexed to that state.
In the 1990s, Ramallah became one of the self-rule areas of the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian Authority is not a state, but it does have some of the trappings of one. in the course of the Al-Aqsa Intifada Ramallah was occupied several times by the Israeli army, but it was not under Israeli occupation while I was there, nor is it now.
So - in what country does Ramallah lie? Turkey, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Palestine - take your pick.
