Well?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Recommend you quickly grow a beard and age 20 years

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

a free jazz wig?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

a) Sea cap'n's beard.
b) Fairisle pullover, preferably mauve in colour.
c) No hair on top.
d) Lots of carrier bags with These Records and Sound 323 written on them.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

*dies*

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

e) Hush Puppies
f) Jacket with leather patches on sleeves

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, the beard could be a problem and i've got a full head of hair.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Beard is essential to protect your chin from essential stroking.

Oh yes, NHS specs as worn by Open University presenters circa 1973.

(in fact, OU presenters circa 1973 appearance/dress code pretty well mandatory per se for free jazz wigouts)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

"excessive stroking" that should have been.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

So to fit in i'll need to look like a very odd drag king?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Well you have to remember that it is highly likely that you will be the ONLY female present at this free jazz wigout!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

therefore if you don't disguise yourself, you might find yourself subject to a lot of unwanted "excessive stroking" of a different kind.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Must also develop ability to tap your feet even when (especially when?) the music has no rhythmic regularity whatsoever and to silently smirk at funny bits of "business" carried out by the musicians - esp. drummers,

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

qv: George Dawes' actually quite OTM pisstake of Eddie Prevost when Vic and Bob did some "free jazz" in Shooting Stars.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I think i remember that. Better not wear a skirt and fishnets then.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

The audience will probably be exactly the same one you would have found in the Calton Studios in, say, 1979.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

In exactly the same clothes

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Blimey. I didn't make it to the Calton Studios till 1991, i was only 4 in 1979.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I parsed this as "what does one to to wear out a free jazz wig" and the rest of the thread was thusly mighty confusing.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Hold on, you're female and you're young - are you quite sure free jazz is for you?

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, they don't wash! It spoils the "pure" element of interaction with improvising musicians.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I should point out that, "interacting with musicians" in this case does not entail giving the road crew blowjobs in order that you can spend some time on the tour bus, but rather discussing what reed was used by the bassoonist earlier in the evening, over a pint of real ale

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Just as well smoking and sinusitus have killed my sense of smell. I'm attempting to broaden my horizons.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

If in doubt, just dress like me, Marcello or Julio Desouza.

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

We dress normally for free jazz gigs, i.e. abnormally by free jazz audience standards.

Then again, if the bassoonist were Lindsay Cooper... ;-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but how Julio gets away with that skirt and fishnets I'll never know

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 22 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

This is the free jazz wig out in question.

I think i'd look rather fetching in a sun ra inspired outfit.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Goatee and spectacles are mandatory. Dingy corduroy highly rcommended.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Why is Latke Gravas hanging out with those metal dudes?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Or you could put on the full raver kit ca. early 90s and noodle dance the whole time.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking more audrey hepburn in funny face.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, I was too, but she actually looks really cute like that, whereas Fred looks ridiculous.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Well, the free jazz wig out was fantastic, i was unsure of what to expect but really enjoyed it. In the end i wore a pair of indigo jeans, a black crossover top with a thin white diagonal stripe and a v-neck vest underneath (the crossover top is a bit 'tits oot' without a vest. The evening was slightly overshadowed by me totally fucking up in a matter of the heart but that's for another thread.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

free jazz is a great solace in times of emotional boohoo

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Boohoo with a boho today

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Evan Paker was amazing

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

parker even

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Parker, Evan... surely?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

*giggles*

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

you didn't try and chat up Parker Evans, did you?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

How did you guess ;).

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to resist that sexy sea cap'n's beard. I hope you didn't start by asking him about his great mate Derek...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Heh. There's something about hairy jazzers that are twice my age that really get me going...

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Especially when they're doing circular breathing down that long metal tube...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

"Come up to my place, big boy, and let's put that circular breathing to some proper use."

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Aaaaarggh. xpost... ish!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Being serious for a second, i saw a face from my past which re-opened old wounds. The fact he was looking even sexier than remembered just made it worse.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

That's exactly what Evan says whenever he sees Derek Bailey

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

To me Derek Bailey is someone who seems to feature in the wire every bloody month.

It was actually a very mixed crowd. There were some of the smelly beardies that you warned me about but also lots of pensioners, hipster types and a surprising amount of young women.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone ever seen Evan Parker and Peter Brotzmann together? I mean, it's like Clark Kent and Superman, isn't it?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a sense of style —— no 'fishnets'.

I find the audience for this kind of thing to be really mixed in terms of age and the m/f ratio isn't so 'bad' or whatever.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Next time wear a Phil Spector wig to the wig out.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've seen Parker and Brotzmann together in several bands - mainly large ensembles like the LJCO and Globe Unity. They usually sat together and looked very studious.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 7 October 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

One of them was surely a robot double from the fortress of solitude.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Is Tomasz Stanko worth seeing? He's playing the queens hall next month.

>> "Triptych" 02/02/2007 14:42:20 >>>

Hello again!

We have news: there's a riot afoot!

Extolling and exploring the volatile facets of the awesome
noise and free-jazz scenes, we're thrilled to announce
that the following aural insurgents are set to converge
for a Free Noise freak-out at Triptych 07. They play
Edinburgh Bongo Club April 28 and Glasgow CCA April 29
(full details below):

Contemporary-sax and free-jazz maverick Evan Parker has
defied and galvanised European music for over 40 years. A
pivotal figure in the UK's improv and avant-garde
movements, Parker's legacy to modern music is massive.

Yellow Swans' improvised arsenal of truly brutal,
beautiful noise is arresting, unnerving and not to be
missed: they forge a progressive, psychedelic corruption
of black electronics, industrial music, US hardcore, and
freeform rock.

C. Spencer Yeh is a visceral sound manipulator, whose
bruising collusions with Thurston Moore and Deerhoof are
avidly matched by his violin-mangled, gong-ho,
throat-poetry under the Burning Star Core appellation.

Also set to arrest at the Free Noise uprising are
California noisenik John Wiese (Bastard Noise);
polyrhythmic improv kingpin Paul Hession (UK); digital
aural malcontents Metalux (US); punk-stunned free-jazz
double-bassist John Edwards (UK); and UK
avant-experimentalists Culver (Skullflower).

This year's Triptych runs from April 25-29, through
Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

The full Triptych 07 programme will be unveiled in the
next few weeks: we'll let you know the details soon!

In the meantime, don't forget we've already confirmed the
following stars for Triptych 07: minimalist pioneer Terry
Riley - an extraordinary composer and musician whose work
upturned and redefined 20th Century music - and who makes
his Scottish debut at this year's festival; Brazilian
techno-pop misfits CSS (Cansei de ser Sexy), who will play
their biggest Scottish headline shows to date at Triptych;
and smouldering arch-chanteuse Ute Lemper - one of
contemporary music's most gifted and singular figures.

Went to see Noah Howard last week (w/Evan Parker and John Edwards in the group). They were supported by Ascension (Paul Hession on drums).

Ascension were (again) magnificent, so much so I kinda switched off a bit when Noah Howard came on.

Still, it ws v good to see all of this again.

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

leigh, and julio -- you do wig out a LOT.

but neither of you went to that tomasz stanko gig back then, no?

I did, it was really good.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Eh? When did Terry Wogan start playing free jazz on his prog?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

tiit -- I do wig out, but am more likely to do so in Peckham not Scotland (where I assume Stanko played at).

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

I really hope I am the only one who initially read this as 'free jizz wag out'.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

ITV2 really missed a trick by not doing a series called FREE JAZZ WAGS BOUTIQUE.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I shall be THERE for the CCA evening (can't wait to see John Wiese)

another london pal of mine went to see that howard/parker/corsano/edwards love-in and said they were heading into more non-free trad murk aspects, gd tho'

six years pass...

i think about this thread frequently
usually i just wear whatever i feel like wearing when i go to a free jazz wig out

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:34 (eleven years ago)

free jazz means free dress too, is what I always say

walid foster dulles (man alive), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:39 (eleven years ago)

formal wear including a monocle which can pop from one's eye at the critical juncture

contenderizer, Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:40 (eleven years ago)

that's not free jazz at all
that's like a steampunk convention

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:42 (eleven years ago)

there was some back page feature in the wire maybe 8 years ago about going to see evan parker and everyone was wearing a cardigan and at first the writer was a little put off by everything but eventually became a huge evan parker fan and acquired a cardigan of his own to wear

marcos, Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:42 (eleven years ago)

i saw a few cardigans last night but mostly hoodies
i was wearing a hoodie and a knit skirt

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:43 (eleven years ago)

sually i just wear whatever i feel like wearing when i go to a free jazz wig out

that seems about right. seems like one of the least-demanding events possible in terms of the clothes it requires

marcos, Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:43 (eleven years ago)

what kind of shoes xp?

marcos, Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:44 (eleven years ago)

winter boots
it's winter

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:45 (eleven years ago)

In addition to the "freeness" of the whole thing, the odds are that there are going to be a bunch of badly dressed dorks there anyway, so it won't matter. Wait, sorry, not a "bunch." A few.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:47 (eleven years ago)

i did notice that many people were wearing hats, but again it's winter
also there were like 15-20 ppl there

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:48 (eleven years ago)

also the cardigan referred to in the wire essay was specifically a "woolly cardigan" not just any cardigan

marcos, Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:49 (eleven years ago)

the hats were not spiritual

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:49 (eleven years ago)

now i want to go to a free jazz wig out.

marcos, Thursday, 15 January 2015 15:53 (eleven years ago)

tis the season

walid foster dulles (man alive), Thursday, 15 January 2015 16:02 (eleven years ago)

Who played LL? Who was doing the wigging?

walid foster dulles (man alive), Thursday, 15 January 2015 16:07 (eleven years ago)

there wasn't much wigging tbh
the highlight was fred lonberg-holm playing some karoli-esque screaming guitar but his cello stuff was good too
this was it http://linkshall.ticketfly.com/event/722919-stirrup-sound-city-workshop-chicago/
