JimD in NYC!

Right! In a ridiculous act of irresponsible spontaneity, I've booked my tickets, and I'm going to be in New York from October 3rd-31st (along with non-ilxor but occasional poptimiser Holly). And I've got questions I'd like help with.

1) Ideally we'd like to get an appartment for the month. Any links to cheap short term accomodation, or suggestions of friends with rooms, or anything like that, would be HUGELY appreciated.

2) I'm planning on doing lots of voluntary stuff while I'm there. I've already contacted an agency called "New York Cares", who seem to have loads of different projects I could get involved in, but if anyone else has any places they know need help, I'd definitely be interested.

3) Any chance of a NYC FAP some time in October? I'd love to meet you all!

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm involved with new york cares too! you need to go to an orientation before you can do any volunteer work though.

check craigslist for short-term apartment sublets.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

wow that's a long time. wish i had renewed my lease, you could've sublet for me. finding something on such short notice might be difficult, but try craigslist.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

i might be doing another warriors halloween party this year on the 31st, but not sure. last year was crazy. afrika bambaataa, mattie from the rapture, fannypack, dan selzer, tim sweeney all dj'ed. though im getting lazy and not sure if i'll pull it together in time.

but yeah try craigslist for a 1-month sublet, and definitely dont wire anyone any money. but finding short term sublets isn't that hard, even so close to the date.

also, i had no idea that people came to new york to volunteer. i thought it was just to party and shop and stuff like that.

i'm involved with new york cares too!

Ooh, cool!

you need to go to an orientation before you can do any volunteer work though

Yep, I spotted that on the site, so I've signed up for one the day after I arrive.

i might be doing another warriors halloween party this year on the 31st

Ack, I would LOVE that, but we fly out the evening of the 31st! Boo.

I'll keep checking craigslist. People there keep failing to reply to our responses though, annoyingly.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 22 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

they probably dont want to have to deal with someone from overseas. tell them you have friends in new york who could arrange key exchange and to look at the place, and money exchange. not me though since im not a good person to trust with other people's money.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 22 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Woo! We've got an appartment sorted out (in Fort Greene, which look svery nice, and close enough to transport, and is cheap), and my voluntary stuff is all set to go as well, yay! So I fly in on monday night. Any chance of that FAP? If not, just meet-ups with any of you would still be nice...

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

only if i can pinch your cheeks! awwww!

but theres lots of stuff going on in october. miss kittin. superpitcher/ada. damian lazaraus. the rapture (first show in long time!).

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

B-b-b-but Phil, everybody will be at Capone's for their dirt cheap Halloween extravaganza!

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm up for a fap. it's going to be a busy october for me but i'll have a pretty good idea of my schedule by next week (i'm starting an internship thingy) so i'll get in touch with you then.

faith popcorn (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I'll FAP but not on a Monday. Otherwise, just run a date up the flagpole and we'll see who salutes. Phil, I expect to see YOU there, young man -- you've been incommunicado long enough.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

i can drink whenever, really. laurel, it'll be good to see you again. i guess ive just been busy working (don't laugh. really. i mean it) and writing a book (no, i'm serious). well, that and getting fucked up a lot.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

ah boo moving into ft. greene when i'm moving out.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

ok, ace. I'll hold fire until I'm in town and settled then, I guess, and then come back here and try to figure out a date and venue. Arr, this is all very exciting!

Ooh, and the rapture! When's that? Haven't seen them since glastonbury 04, and loved them there.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

i forgot. there's two dates though. one at bowery ballroom (fairly big venue) and one before that at a smaller venue thats supposed to be "secret", but they're selling tickets for it on ticketweb, so i guess not so secret. the first one should be better fun since afterwards the rub'n'tug guys are dj'ing.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm here! I've been here just over a week now, in fact, and I'm starting to feel pretty settled. So, this FAP then...how about if I said I was going to see a band I've never heard of, called Illumina, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Cafe, this saturday night? Would anyone be up for coming along to that?

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

PS It's free.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

im going to see the rapture on saturday (also free) at tribeca grand. and with JDH and DaveP dj'ing their triumphant return to new york, or something like that. you should come. though it might be scary packed

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, Jim. The BAM thing is a possibility but really, the write-up on their website doesn't tell me ANYthing about what to expect from the performance! Useless.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, actually, yeah...free rapture sounds like much more fun! So yeah, I'd definitely be up for that (I can do the other BAM show, on the friday night, to get my random-band kicks).

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Man, Phil is always doing cool things. I would have to say, if asked re Saturday, that I will probably drink a little wine, possibly with a girl friend, smoke a lot of cigarettes, maybe watch some Netflix in my cozy home. Oy.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Ah Laurel, don't stay in, come out! Although, you know, I've got another 3 weeeks here yet, so I guess there's no rush.

I found an email address for guest list requests for this FIXED/Rapture thing, and got a reply saying I'm on there now. So woo! I'm coming. And bringing Holly. And maybe my friend Charlie too.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I can't be arsed to get dressed up for anything and schlep myself out of Bklyn if there's no guarantee of a reasonable amount of physical comfort. No longer interested in shows I have to stand for or clubs that will be too crowded for dancing (AHEM Shout!/Motherfucker/Tiswas) or drinks that cost more than $5 unless the quality of cocktails & company are equally fabulous. Actually the Tribecca Grand hotel bar is an awesome place to have cocktails but I would expect the show to be SRO.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

its going to be somewhat insane at the door, so i recommend getting there early'ish. but pre-drink because drinks there are expensive. like $10 for a vodka. $8'ish for a beer? there might be free PBR though from like 10-11. so much fun stuff this month. superpitcher/ada, broadcast, miss kittin, dj twitch, luke vibert, jacques lu cont. jamie lidell w/ freeblood (!!! sideproject) tomorrow at rothko. warriors halloween thing on the 29th unelss i cancel it since i havent booked any djs yet. cutcopy is playing too

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Hm, Phil, I'm tempted by your Hween bash since I missed it last time due to uncooperative boyfriend. Keep me/us posted about whether it goes ahead, eh?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Heh, Lauren, I totally agree with you, when I'm in London. But hey, I'm on holiday, I figure I should be making an effort.

What's PBR?

I'm EXCITED about the halloween thing too, yay! It turns out my flatmate was at the last one, randomly enough.

I missed fourtet last night, boo.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Lauren? Who's Lauren? Sorry. Laurel.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

really? your flatmate in london or your flatmate here? what did he/she dress up as?

PBR = pabst blue ribbon. cheap beer. as seen in "blue velvet".

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Hey Phil... You heard that Rockstar is coming out with a Warriors video game right and they just came out with a Director's Cut DVD? You should hook that shit for a sponsor.

As for stuff to do.... You can come help me study law school stuff if you want. It is awesome.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i tried, but it was too late. they already got their marketing budget in place like many months ago.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Bollocks. Anyway, hope it still happens.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Phil, my flatmate here. Random English guy called Andy who we found through craigslist. He just happened to mention that he'd been at a great halloween party last year, and bambaataa had been there, and I was like "OMG, that must've been Phil's!". He didn't know whose party it was though, he'd just tagged along with some friends of friends.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm jealous! Have a great time Phil, what kind of volunteer work are you doing exactly?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Jim not Phil, haha

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, ew, volunteer work.

ask your roommate if he went with an english girl named Ize (pronounced izzy). nigerian girl from london.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

tonite at sway (305 spring street - on the west side)

djs:
cut copy
cat (fannypack)
adam shore (vice records)

free beer 10-11. $2 shots of jack daniels all nite.

this should be somewhat fun, if it stops raining

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, last time I was at Sway was the time we ended up at that benefit loft party w/ Lucas & Andrew and they told some teenaged girls that Andrew was from "White Jamaica".

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHA i think i heard about that

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, sway, maybe. But I've spent my day so far getting very very wet on and around wall street and was sort of looking forward to a cozy night in, now. On the other hand, what was that I said upthread about making an effort? Well, I'll see how I feel later. Ooh, and I've got a phone number here now, which I guess I don't need to be careful with, since it's just a pay-as-you-go sim which I'll be throwing away again when I leave. So, I'm 917-463-7283. Will ask roomate when I see him, though I don't, much.

what kind of volunteer work are you doing exactly?

All sorts of things. Last night I was teaching old people how to use computers. Later on I'm getting up at 5.00 to feed breakfast to homeless people, spending a day tidying up fort greene park, reading bedtime stories to kids in a care home (or something), showing families around the whitney museum, all kinds of stuff. FUN!

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, last time I was at Sway was the time we ended up at that benefit loft party w/ Lucas & Andrew and they told some teenaged girls that Andrew was from "White Jamaica".

My favorite was when Lucas told some poor girl that he was a taxidermist, and his last gig was stuffing some park avenue matron's beloved pet Bolivian jumping beetle, and then outfitting him in an Hermes scarf. She was enthralled. But we ran into her 2 weeks later, came up to us and was really upset that we made a total fool of her before. Oh well.

On the other hand, what was that I said upthread about making an effort? Well, I'll see how I feel later.

you should come. stay up all night and when the bar closes at 4, you can head straight to the homeless shelter!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hello hello. So, I'm still here, until monday. Tomorrow night I'm having dinner somewhere with Laurel and Holly, I guess at 8ish, probably. If it's just us, we'll do it round here in brooklyn, but if anyone else fancies coming along then that'd be great, I'd love to meet some more of you, and the venue is up for debate...

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to the Surface Magazine / Avant Guardian photography reception, and my #2 fashion crush Zac Posen is going to be there which is incredibly exciting. but thats early. if y'all go somewhere in either manhattan or williamsburg afterwards for drinks, lemme know.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Thursday night is good party in Williamsburg at Supreme Trading. The Gossip, Holy Hail (ex-Fannypack), and some new band that someone from Le Tigre is in. I think its $10, but free Vodka from like 10-12, or something like that.

Then Rory (Trash UK), Massimo, and Michael Goodstein DJ'ing

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 October 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 October 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

oh whoops. its that early? shit shit shit

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 October 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Keeping it alive....

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

laurel u come to my halloween party too. i put u on guestlist

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

No, WHAT?! The GUESTLIST? I'm shocked. But delighted! Seriously, Phil, I'll try but I feel guilty ditching this JC thing now. Will have to see how it goes.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

No takers? All right, Bklyn is it, then.
