It is fun to take a city bus all the way uptown on the east side, and then back down on the west. The 101 goes up 3rd Ave. before heading west, and then you could transfer to the 11 at Amsterdam Ave. (which becomes 10th Ave. on the way back down).

[PDF bus map here]

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd ridden subways less when I first came here, because you don't get as good a sense of the city.

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah thanks, that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about! I mean, I have no hope of getting a sense of the city b/c I'm only going to be up there for a couple of days...but yeah, there's something disconcerting and disjointed about just riding the planes and trains the whole time

Staten Island Ferry, of course, if you've never done it. Especially if it's any kind of nice day. And the Roosevelt Island Tramway is kinda nifty, quick and cheap. Don't bother exploring Roosevelt Island itself, there ain't much to see, but the tram rides out and back are nice.

Dan and Counfounded failed to mention that Capone's, which is a bar, which hosts dance parties, gives you a whole free pizza all to yourself with a purchase of one beer.

I will be Dj'ing it Saturday...and although it's not Manhattan, it's one stop outside of Manhattan on the L (Bedford)

MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

the pinefox, Friday, 30 September 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

emilys.,

Most trains in Manhattan go to Union Square/14th St. When you're there, you can transfer to the L train to get to (the dreaded) Williamsburg...but it's not a lengthy journey into Brooklyn; it's literally one stop. It's a much longer ride just going from uptown Manhattan to downtown Manhattan.

And as we've discussed on this board one-jillion times, Williamsburg is not like the magazines and kill whitey promos will have you believe. It's really tame. Except for Capone's, which is teh fun, from what I understand.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 30 September 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

actually, it's literally two stops. heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, I meant one stop outside of Manhattan, but yes, Joel is being much clearer than I overall.

Thanks.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 30 September 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I have been to Williamsburg, and it was good, as I have said before. What is 'Kill Whitey'?

the pinefox, Friday, 30 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I am posting this for pinefox's information, not so this thread turns into an extended meditation on it.

Kill Whitey thread

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

So - it is a nightclub, not a party by some ilxor?

It sounds racist. I strongly disapprove.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah he's as gay as all git-out. not sure what that has to do with anything, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Phil, my guess is the article was read without any context...but it's pretty tough to defend "free entry with a bucket of chicken", despite context...

But seriously, it's pretty clear that all Washington Post readers (and readers of sources that republished the article) have analyzed it to death and come to a conclusion 5 miles removed from the actual intentions.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 3 October 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

gayburger! there can be like "the bubble-butt beef-burger" with a side of poppers. jalapeno poppers, that is. i should write up a business plan.

better burger is gross though. its like health burgers. so nasty.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 October 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

the dallas bbq on 8th/23rd is pretty funny though. its lots of straight black people and gay white dudes enjoying beef briskets and baby back ribs together in harmony.

I went to the Masonic Lodge on 23rd Street, very creepy. Also the lobby of the Chrysler Building and its circa 1930 mural.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I missed the masonic thing, I didn't leave the house on Sat. But I made it to the Little Red Lighthouse and the High Bridge water tower, both were teh awesome.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Also the lobby of the Chrysler Building and its circa 1930 mural.

you can do that any time! what i really want is to explore the rest of the building. i had a job interview in there once, but they're very strict about what parts of the building you're allowed to visit. they have those elevators that only allow you to go to certain floors.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Also, the DUMBO arts festival is this weekend, they seem to have lots of free stuff happening, but the website's kinda confusing so I'm not sure exactly what's going on.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I thought the most exciting thing on the list was the walking tour of Ellis Island (offered this year for the first time) but apparently it filled up over a month ago. Every time I go to EI I hang out by the windows and drool at the views of other buildings, other wings that have never been open to public so basically the tour would have been a fantasy come true. Ah bah.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Amazing Views from the Chrysler Building's 69th Floor

My dentist's office is on the 69th floor of the Chrysler Building (he's an excellent homeopathic dentist, by the way). I'm a sort of new patient -- I've only seen him four times so far. The first time I visited the office and saw the amazing views, I thought, "Wow! I have to bring my camera next time!" The second time I went, it was, "Darn! Forgot my camera!" The third time, "Drats! It's raining and totally overcast, and there's no view at all." I almost forgot to bring my camera the fourth time, but I remembered at the last minute. I'm very glad I did -- and hopefully you will be, too....

On the day these pictures were taken, I arrived at the office at 5:30 pm., and took a few pics before my appointment. Then they cleaned my teeth and took some x-rays. I was glad when I was done (any poking and prodding of the dental variety is no particular fun). Before I left, I took some more pics. The sun was starting to set, and I wandered into another dentist's office across the way, to look at his views. He was very nice, and led me all around his wing. I snapped more pics as the sun set, and disappeared into the horizon. It was fabulous!!

start here

I was sposed to go with my friends to Governors Island, but they impulsively went in the downpour on Saturday instead of Sunday.

Yeah, I was expecting more than the lobby at Chrysler Bldg, but you'd usually get trod on while staring at the mural for 20 mins on a weekday.
