Tattoos - Suck or Rock?

So, yeah? Do you have one? How about body piercings? How about little drawings you did on your hand when you were bored at work?

I'm really just trying to suss out personal details about all of you, you know.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well as you know Ally, I have only one tattoo, but no one's ever seen it, since it's right on the edge of my anus. In a child's scrawled cursive it says "let the foolish stay foolish".

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

you know, threads have been deleted for less than that particular revelation.

tattoos are alright for you. i have no interest in them, perhaps because i know too many old people with tattoos that are just embarrassing now. (though, i must admit, my grandmother's companion has "love" and "hate" tattooed on his knuckles -- just like robert mitchum! -- and that's pretty cool.)

fred solinger, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I went to get a tattoo that was to read "tattoos are dumb" but the tattooist tricked me and wrote "tattoos are cool". Needless to say I didn't pay him, but he didn't care.

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No tattoos, no piercings, no drawings. I can't believe anyone here would be surprised.

I have no "tatoos" but I do have Tatoos.

-- Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I once had an earring, but I took it out. Body piercing doesn't do much for me, 9/10 times it looks really bad. Tatoos are fine if they're tasteful.

DG, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I change my mind about everything every 10 minutes or so, so I know if I got one I'd either be: regretting it, or wishing I had gotten another design pretty much right away. I can't commit.

Everyone I know with body piercings is really annoying, so it put me off it if the pain threshold issue wasn't there in the first place. My ears were pierced, but I haven't worn earrings in about a year, so I don't even know if that counts anymore.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I shoved earrings into my own ears when I was bored one night, but one of them gets sore every once and a while now. It doesn't actually hurt to do it, it only hurts if it gets infected or doesn't heal up quite kosher.

I have changed my mind about one tattoo, but you can get them covered up with a new one.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No tattoos, no piercings, no jewellery at all. I guess at the moment Tattoo's are in fashion, chinese symbol's and all that...I'm a hypochrondriac so there ain't no way I would sanction such danger, and as for drawing on my hand, I'd get worried about ink poisoning! :)...I just think, what about when you're old, or you go off them?...

james e l, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I used to put toothpaste on my belly as a kid. Does that count? I also think I used to try drawing Senor Wiencis on my hand, too. I end up drawing on myself (& my clothes, really) because of my lack of coordination.

But no tats and no holes for yours truly. No plans to, either.

In moderation, both can be aesthetically pleasing accessories to enhance one's personal appearance. However, once you go & start poking everything & drawing on any spot of free real estate impervious to repeated needling , you're asking for trouble. Imagine, say, what Tommy Lee will look like when he hits 65? (Assuming he makes it, that is?) Hung like a horse, sure, but flaps upon flaps of distended skin full of hellfire & skulls & stuff. Rock & roll, maybe, but a bit much, I think.

And now, I'll go suck on a Werthers butterscotch candy & listen to some Lawrence Welk. Honey, where's my Shirley Temple?

David Raposa, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

By the time we're all old, laser surgery will be so perfected that you can easily remove them. That being said, if you get the right ones you aren't going to go off them, ie no giant flaming skulls on your torso or some such.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I mean the Undertaker's got a tattoo on his neck just under his adam's apple, and all I can think is "ouch that musta hurt!"

james e l, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I feel sort of bad for all the peopl e of my generation who got tatoos when everybody was doing it. Soon enough they will feel like some sort of reformed bikers or something. I mean, is there really ANY image or word you would want on your BODy for EVER? except maybe an arrow pointing to the belly with the text "Its fat "

-- Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tattoo removal, now there's a growth industry. You know what to do if you want to make money.

Patrick, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

However, I have considered getting a gold tooth, as one of my front teeth is false.

james e l, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can think of loads of things I want on my body forever. That's why they're there. I think it's crap to assume that people got them because they were popular in the mid-90s; I'm certain some people did but really too many people are hella squeamish or completely nonresistant to pain, so it's not likely that the majority of people wandering with tattoos did it because of that, with no other reason or inclination. You don't just say, well, that's popular right now, let me plunk down at least $100 to go through what I've been told is excruciating pain (which is so bullshit, it doesn't hurt at all) to have something permanently inked on my body. I mean, everyone knows that as of now the removal process is actually more painful than the tattooing process (supposedly, again, which probably means it feels like someone tapping you slightly harder), so that's a theory that never made much sense to me.

Like I said, I'm certain some people did it. I know a lot of piercers who did that, but piercing is different because it (supposedly) hurts way less - again, neither hurt me a whit - and once you're sick of it, you just take it out and it closes up.

I personally got into doing both because I wanted to feel the pain. But I've never done it because it was something that was trendy - which is a stupid reason and AGAIN I don't believe most people who get tattoos do it for that reason - or to fit in or anything of the like. I've wanted the same rose tattoo since I was 12, and I was so psyched I finally got it - I can't imagine getting sick of it after nearly ten years of dying for it. The one on my ankle is the same way, I always wanted it.

Now, the only problem I'm having with my tattoos is the one on my stomach, chosen because it was the simplest design and I wanted to appease a boyfriend who was very much against tattoos (even after it was dead and done, he had nothing nice to say about it, even after I tried to explain WHY I chose the one I did, it was very depressing). I have an idea of what I wanted there and I will get it done over it, as the guy told me he could cover it very easily.

I'm getting a 4th one done on my lower back. *shrugs* I'm not big into piercing though, ears and navel are enough for me. I've toyed with the idea of getting my tongue done but every time I think about it, I think about having to lisp for a week and it puts me off.

The stupidest thing I ever saw was a male so-called friend of mine went with me to get one once and agreed to get an arm band that it was obvious he wasn't really into just because I called my cohorts wusses because all of them claimed they wanted to get one done (admittedly after I insisted we go down because I knew what I wanted) then once I was under the needle decided to just take pictures of me and say that's as good as getting their own. So after I said, well, I think certain tattoos are very sexy, he gets this arm band, I'm not an arm band person mind you, and it's just not cool at all, it's way too thin and girly and just argh.

Then he totally fucked up later that night with me and I haven't spoken to him since. So now he's stuck with this stupid thing forever that he just got cos he thought it'd impress me. It makes me laugh every time I think of it - divine justice for trying to take advantage of two girls, I reckon.

Now THAT'S the stupidest reason to get a tattoo.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think you should get intertwining dragons up your left arm and angels on the right arm. Cool!

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I briefly toyed with the idea of getting a strawberry birthmark tattooed over half of my face. Then I sobered up.

I'm somewhat obsessed with the idea of getting a Mad Max-style tattoo across my face, though. The one good thing I could see about a thermonuclear war is that I would be able to do all of these bizarre things that have occurred to me over the years and be the height of fashion in the post-apocalyptic society that would stir from the rubble.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a purple and green paisley tattooed on my right upper arm. So even when I'm naked, I'm still wearing paisley. You can take the girl out of psychedelia, but you can't take the psychedelia out of the girl, or, erm, something.

Never regretted it. Never. Not even when my mom found out. (I got it when I was 18) But then again, I did have the design pinned up over my bed for nearly a year before I finally got it inked, because I knew too many people who got "flaming skulls puking snakes" type tattoos and completely regretted it.

I used to have a nose-ring, but the hole closed over while I was in jail. (They made me take it out so it wouldn't get ripped out in a catfight.) I'm kinda grossed out by piercings, so I never got any more.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Were you put in jail by the Taste Police for fancying Bobby Gillespie? ;-)

DG, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lisping is the only reason to pierce your tongue. Likewise, regretting some awful tattoo when I'm old would be the only reason for me to get one. I never have exposed skin, so I'd have to pull an Iverson and tattoo my neck or something, fuck that. But I'd love to get old and be like, "I was a teenage Nazi." Which I totally wasn't, but I might not remember by then.

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was just at a wedding and on eof the bridesmaids had this naked- backed dress and this moronic tatoo was visible. It looked daft.

-- Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If you think lisping is the only reason to pierce your tongue, then I pity you.

I think everyone needs tattoos. My mission at the October meet is to convince everyone to get one.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I disagree that everyone should get tattoos. I am of the opinion that tattoos are special, and should only be made for personal reasons, or to commemorate landmark events or decisions in a person's life. Often the reasons behind getting a tattoo are as responsible for a person regretting it, as the actual image the tattoo depicts.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But doesn't everyone have landmark events?

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I guess I should've gotten a tatoo when I graduated high school of the school in flames with the words "SCHOOLS OUT FOREVER!" Or maybe a tatoo of Elvis after I lost virginity.

-- Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Cant see the point of tattoos or piercings. My neighbour Barry has got the Jack Nicholson "Hey Johnny"! thing out of The Shining tattooed on his back which i thought was well cool but I think he regrets it now.

cool tattoo - one on left arm of che guevara, black ink very nice. way evil bitch tat - one on right arm of way evil bitch ex (well, not ex at time of tat) Valeria, cursive script, over coloured rose...am thinking of getting it altered to read Valium but my doc won't prescribe it, and Temazapan is just too fucked. Piercings - current - 2 in left ear, one in nose, one in nipple, one in navel, one in penis - latter was done as gonzo journalism for student paper, will eventually post article on site. Latent - chin, right ears.

PENIS??? Arrrgh. I mean, I'm sorry, I'm not insulting you, it just brings up this horrible, horrible memory from high school, this boy I knew got a Prince Albert done, and we're all sitting in Burger King for lunch when he tells us this. He proceeds to stand up, and WHIP IT OUT AT ME, "Hey, look, isn't it great?" It was freshly done and all red and swollen and I heard later that it got infected, it was the most disgusting thing I had seen, and believe me, if there was ONE PERSON in our social circle who I'd say I wanted to NEVER see naked, it was this guy. And in the middle of a crowded Burger King! Argh.

Didn't it hurt?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That's why nether-region piercing disturbs me so -- infections! I got a really bad ear infection when I got my ears pierced years ago, so I shudder to think what would happen with other piercings.

Nicole, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was worried about my tongue getting infected, does that happen? I thought about it long and hard - if my tongue got infected, it'd swell up! I'd look freakish!

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The penis kinda hurt, but that was cos the fuckwitted pierceer used the wrong sized ring, and I had to get it replaced a coupla weeks later by a professional...still, it was a great excuse to whip it oout in public. You'd be surprised how many people, when asked if they want to see it, are surprised when they do.

Now piercing my own nipple - that kinda hurt.

i have a prince albert
so now when someone calls the store and asks if i have Prince Albert in a can i can say no i have one in my pants

BTW why is it called a Prince Albert

anthony, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Prince Albert is named after the consort of Queen Victoria. Legend has it that he got his penis pierced so he could strap the end of it to his left leg and so keep it under control at public engagements.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It probably wasn't a legend you know, piercings for penis control were quite the fashion amongst Victorian gents.

DG, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Albert Fish took genital piercing to new levels. In fact, there was so much metal in his nether regions that it short-circuited the electric chair. I bet the old bastard got a thrill out of that.

As for me, I've had both nostrils pierced. It's left these strange lumps of flesh inside so I'm not having them done again. And I always had bogeys getting stuck in the metal. I was going through a bit of a crusty phase at the time, I'm afraid.

Johnathan, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fish had 25-30 needles self-inserted in the area of his perineum = true

"there was so much metal in his nether regions that it short-circuited the electric chair" = total urban myth

Anthony, you can't *just* have got your PA so you could say that when people asked you that? It sure seems a lot to go through for such a meagre reason!! How often do people say that any more anywa?

Ooooh, I love that. Did the idea just come straight from yr brain or is there a reference there?

emil.y, Sunday, 13 July 2014 00:41 (nine years ago) link

I guess it was my idea but i got inspiration online and let the artist run with it. I really love geometric designs and I wanted an elephant because 1) they're amazing 2) they're good luck and 3) my mom used to collect them so it's sort of a tribute to her. I found a couple geometric designs online and sent them to the artist who used them for inspiration to draw this one. I also really really love watercolor tattoos but they have to be done right or the colors will bleed and eventually get muddled so I showed her some in the style I like and she did the shading and splatters in a way that won't do that but still looked very close.
