Free Trade C/D - Why does it work in Asia but not in South America?

What's everyones opinion on this? I dont know much about the issue and would appreciate some input from all you fine people.

There is another thread but it seems to be more specifically about wal-mart.

I don't know about this in much detail, but my understanding is that a lot of the more economically successful countries in Asia haven't practiced free trade in the sense that it is widely forced down South American countries' throats. They became successful precisely by maintaining their economic sovereignty in certain respects. Why they were in a position to do this without being crushed, I'm really not sure of.

("Economic sovereignty" meaning stuff like tariffs, state subsidies for industries, not privatizing everything.)
