is what I immediately thought of

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Sunday, 16 October 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Same gender balance, but I presume that the blonde on the right is not a nurse from London who can never meet the right man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 October 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I thought of them first too, Donna - I knew them slightly!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 16 October 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

but were they your flatmates? (man, I can't even use the 'it's too early' excuse for the bad joke, it's 2 p.m.)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Sunday, 16 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

And nation shall speak unto nation, indeed.

seven months pass...
Episode 43: Exam revision
Michal: Oh dear I have my exam today. I'm really worried. Helen, will you practise with me please?
Helen: You must be joking!
Michal: Alice?
Alice: Oh Michal, you know I'm just back from a night-shift. I'm exhausted, sorry.
Tim: Don't worry mate, you'll be all right. Just relax, be yourself…
Michal: But I did very bad in my practice test last week.
Helen: I told you Michal, it's important to revise for exams but you went out every night this week.
Michal: Yes I know but it's a speaking exam so I had to talk to people. Won't anyone help me? Thanks Bronka, that's a big help!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

You did badly , Michal.

This is very cute. I think I would like it if I was foreign.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

thanks, bronka.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Bronka is apparently the cat.

How does this compare to Deutsch Plus, in which hapless Rumanian emigrant to Germany Nico gets a job with a TV station, gets inadvertantly mixed up with evil German drug dealers, ultimately finds love, and ends up handing his job on to Marc Almond in drag?

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

pause and paws
The first is a short gap in speech, the second are animals’ feet

pores and pours
The first are small holes in the skin, the second is from the verb ‘to pour water from a jug’

I'm sure this will prove invaluable to students of English who have suffered from repeated confusion of these homophones.

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Someone should do a programme where all the fictional people from language training courses get together and hang out. The swinger guy from Deutsch Plus would try it on with both of the lady flatmates while Cerberus from the Cambridge Latin Course could terrorise Bronka.

In Finnish elementary school, we were taught English by two robots called UR-9 and ME-2. And a kid called John Julius, aka "J.J.".

And, most importantly, "Big Muzzy", who came from space and ate clocks:

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Finland makes more sense to me now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I think "Big Muzzy" was actually a BBC production, and it should be enjoyable to a non-English learner too: there were mad scientists, cloned princesses, action and adventure, and Muzzy eating parking meters. Lot's of fun for bored kids!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

It was an animation, if that wasn't clear.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

You mean that image isn't a photo? I'm crushed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Muzzy teaches French!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

"voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)

This is what I though Tuomas had written:

And, most importantly, "Big Muzzy", who came from space and ate cocks:

suddenly it all made sense.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I love Muzzy!

Grumio the cook from the Cambridge Latin course was pretty great too though. He was always drunk or amorous or sulking, or shouting "pestis! furcifer!" at Cerberus.

I thought that too, DV : (

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 06:08 (twenty years ago)

GCSE Spanish is (or perhaps was, the kids probably get taught it with their podcasts and The Mint these days) taught with those two lovable cartoon hounds, Sancho e Panza. They were rubbish.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Priceless foornote from one of the books we studied during our ESL course:

"In fairy tales animals can talk."

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

argh. foornote -> footnote

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I thought that too, DV : (

so sad to think like me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh, DV.
