we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Sunday, 16 October 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't worry me. I'm a squirrel.

You have to break potentially tens of millions of eggs to make an omelette.

News headlines last week, “150 million may die”
News headlines one day after “government urges public not to panic”

Err make your mind up.

I'm a little bit worried we might be out of turkeys and geese before Christmas, but apart from that, meh.

I just read a very interesting interview with two specialists who say we don't really have anything to worry about. Sure, it could happen, but there are many factors that speak against it. One thing that gets misinterpreted: Specialists think because it's been such a long time, we're heading for a new flu. This is of course wrong thinking: chances remain as high as when it would have happened two days ago. It doesn't mean because it happened a few decades ago, we're more likely to have a new pandemic. Also, the longer the avian flu spreads among birds, the less likely it'll mutate (and spread from human to human). Specialists also say 15O million based on what happened in 1918 and taking into account that our population has multiplied by 1,5. So they wrong assume we'll have more casualities. But health/hygiene and research has improved drastically. We're not recovering from a world war, we don't live in the same conditions as then. The worst places to be hit are of course the countries where poverty is the highest because of bad health care. There's a lot more that they brought up. Of course it could happen, but it doesn't mean it will. They said the media is a bad thing: they report everything, even if a chicken sneezes, which is sending out the wrong message to the public. :-) Anyway, I'm a lot less worried about it all after reading this.

in today's herald, there's a lengthy page-six lead about how 50,000 brits could die and OH NOES WE'RE ALL FUX0RD.

then, at the end of the piece, the scientist dude providing all the quotes comes out with: "it might never happen. if I were a betting man I'd say we'll probably be all right."

so that's fine, then.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

"...but I'm not a betting man, I'm a scientist, and we're all FUXORED!"

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

You’re all going to die, oh maybe you won't, oh news just in £150 million will die, oops sorry, it might not happen.

50000 brits doomed to death from migrating ducks, oh wait a minute it might never happen.

Enough already!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

£150 million?

sorry i meant people not how much i owe.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

If you think about 150 million people dying isn't THAT much. I mean, of course it's a lot of people, but if you think about all the press this has been getting, you'd think it's something far worse.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to stock up on frozen turkeys now and then flog them for a vast profit when there's a shortage at Xmas. Anyone have a spare walk-in freezer I can borrow?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 17 October 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm already onto this idea. Am buying a couple of frozen turkeys on my way home tonight.

that's genius! if i were a betting man i'd bet we'll be alright too - because if we're not, i wouldn't care about that money innit!!!!!!!!! It's thoughts like this that are the reason that he's a scientist.

Selling prescription drugs without a licence is against the law in the UK, too...

THE UNTALKED-ABOUT PIGEON SHIT HANTAVIRUS WILL KILL US ALL.

To add to Natalie's comments, most of the reasons for the mass deaths in the 1918 pandemic wasn't cause directly by the flu, as much as the post-effects, that would have been easily curable had PENICILLIN been used.

Granted, this is a different virus than the one in 1918.. so it's all just conjecture.

But predicting what H5N1 will do is like predicting what the video game computer market will be like in the near future, based on figures from the sales of Coleco, Odyssey2, and Atari 2600s in 1984.

Just reapeat this to yoru self "Neither I or anyone I love will die from bird flu. Neither I or anyone I love will die from bird flu. Neither I or anyone I love will die from bird flu. Neither I or anyone I love will die from bird flu. Neither I or anyone I love will die from bird flu. "

Green Olive Face (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 8 January 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

... but won't the Birdman appear after about 3 repeats?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Yes, he will , and he will grant you immunity to birdfru. Then he will lay a massive egg on your foot which equals ten omelets.

Green Olive Face (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Thanks!

Why does CNN keep this useful information from us? It's a conspiracy!

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

CNN feeds on public fear of minor threats, like "household germs" and "sugar"

Green Olive Face (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:20 (twenty years ago)

OH NO! WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY SUGAR?

(*repeats Sugar Sugar Sugar to himself*)

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

It makes you content.

Green Olive Face (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Ah. Thanks. *content*

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Now what was that about my little domesticated germs?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:33 (twenty years ago)

They can be frightening when viewed with a microscope. The soul may never recover.

Green Olive Face (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that's alright then. I don't care for their souls.

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I meant your soul, but yes, the germs' souls may also be for the worse after the visual invasion.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

eh, whatever. it's probably still more likely that you'll die in a car crash or from smoking cigarettes.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't matter, you still got more chance dying from it.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Robert G. Webster believes there is a 50-50 chance the avian flu could mutate to become easily transmissble to humans. (St. Jude Hospital)

ROFL! Fifty fifty chance. How long did he have to study to come to that conclusion: either it'll happen or it won't.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha! So would you believe him if he said there's a 49.56/50.44 chance of it happening??

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

LOL @ Russian dude.
