And no "jokes" about having the 100m binge drink introduced as an event, please, they've all been done before...

Lord, no. Morris dancing is rural; London is not. Morris dancing is English; our team is Great Britain & Northern Ireland. I expect we will get a multicultural showcase not unlike the one we had for Eurovision, although that was a bit mish but if they've got any sense they'll employ the (British) company that organised the Athens opening ceremony, which was pretty darn good.

There will also be big, red, double-decker buses driving round the track, obv.

Syncronised Routemasters skidding around on a oil soaked surface, with dancers dressed as commuters hanging off the back of them like Michael Crawford. The bus breaks down! Then more dancers come out looking like mechanics and do an exaggerated head scratch. Then the lights fail. The David Beckham comes in.

A shoot-out between whatever members of the So Solid Crew are still alive/unincarcerated by then.

The opening ceremony of Euro 96 featured "a Medaeval jousting spectacular"(sic, but it says it in the programme) which culmiated in a papier-mache dragon being slayed by a man on horseback. It may have been a dig at Wales' failure to qualify.

Aww, I was hoping he'd actually get away with it.

Back to the subject: I'd like to see a tribute to "On The Buses".

King Boy Pato, Sunday, 6 April 2008 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, why do people take this shit so seriously?

Mr. Goodman, Sunday, 6 April 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

probably a mixture of

-perceived support for totalitarian regimee
-people souring on 2012

banriquit, Sunday, 6 April 2008 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Bob Six, Sunday, 6 April 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Giant effigies of notorious British eccentrics, past and present.

Not what should, but what could, i'm guessing is this...

...you're kidding, I hope.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

Nope. The blue one looks like Sonic the Hedgehog in profile.

Still, nice to see Super Furry Animals recouping some money from their old stage gear.

I'm getting more of a Residents vibe.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

Actually I blame Lazy Town.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

Boy if the opening ceremonies were choreographed to something like "Smelly Tongues" = best Olympic ever.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

They might as well go all out now, they're gonna get crucified in the press tomorrow.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

I hear The Residents but c'mon...

one year passes...

Anyone actually get tickets, then?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 2 June 2011 08:36 (fifteen years ago)

I would love to see all the athletes parade with their pets.

Aimless, Thursday, 2 June 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Man. Those mascots. Although I do remember from the day they were introduced, that the blue one, who looks like he peed his pants, rather politically incorrectly happens to be the Special olympics mascot.

StanM, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

I still cant look at the logo without thinking it's lisa simpson going down on bart, why did anyone ever suggest that arrrrgh.

The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:15 (fifteen years ago)

About £320 has gone from my gf's account - we put in for BMX, diving, one of the gymnastics events and one of the athletics days.

Matt DC, Friday, 3 June 2011 11:22 (fifteen years ago)

Those actually sound worth going to see. I imagine the diving (is it outdoors?) would be an especially serene experience.

I thought I would be clever, while drunk, and put in for a bunch of low-interest stuff, without considering whether or not I was interested in seeing them either. As a result I am £300 poorer and it's probably all gone on the women's weightlifting and grandstand seats for finish of the 30km walk.
