Hyperdimensional cider donut... mmmmmm...

Paranoid Spice (kate), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Post me one

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

it'll be stale before it arrives! i've made these before and with no preservatives they don't stay edible for long.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

FedEx it like my brother used to do with NYC bagels.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

i'll pack them in dry ice like those steak companies do.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Surely the cider will keep them fresh?

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

i wish it worked that way.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

are those things really good? they look the real thing, but i've always been skeptical.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping that's just a pic of some random interweb cider donuts, not of your kitchen table.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

they are really good. autumnal-tasting and not sickeningly sweet. and the crystallized sugar on the outside adds a nice crunch.

(those are random interweb donuts.)

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

jesus fuck i want to go to union square farmers market ASAP.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

You have to eat them right off the donut tree.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I've decided Friday is the Grand Inaugural Donut Day at my office. I wonder where I can get some of these. (Since you stubbornly refuse to extend the hand of transatlantic friendship by mailing me one) xxpost

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I spent a few summers/falls working in a historical village about 10 years ago, and one of the sites was a cider mill, so I got to run the steam-powered cider press. so much cider, donuts, & popcorn, that it was like drinking drano.

also: pressed-apple pulp = bad stuff. Will burn right thru your stomach lining if you let it.

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

cider popcorn?

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if these exist outside of america. they're mostly a new york/new england thing, i gather.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Why is pressed apple pulp so bad for you? Weird. Does it have anything to do with the toxicity of apple seeds? I've read that 50 apple seeds is a fatal dose.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

maybe it has something to do with the amount of acid?

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Or if it's just a wad of skins, seeds and that sharp cartilage-like stuff that surrounds the seeds, I can see that doing a number on your stomach. Poor JD, weren't they paying you enough at the Sturbridge Village joint? Was the apple pulp the employee dinner?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

My kingdom for cider donuts! I haven't thought about these in years, but now I want them more than anything.

CYBER DONUTS

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

oh man, the orchard by my house when i was growing up used to sell homemade cider donuts. i have never wanted anything so badly as i do right now.

the amount of acid concentrated in the pulp. thus the "burn a hole" comment. good for horses, not so much for us.

yeah, apple seeds have a touch of cyanide.

cider mills really weren't focused on any particular region of the country. if you had apple orchards, you had cider mills.

Here's where I worked: Historical Crossroads Village & the Huckleberry Railroad. Was involved from about the age of 14 -> 19.

Having 18-year-olds run a big-ass steam-powered cider press = fun. thank God i didn't have to run that steam engine, tho.

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

these sound delicious! is there a reliable place to find them?

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

and more!

The cider doughnuts at Cherry Hill Farm & Orchard in Clinton (301-292-4642) have such an avid following that you may want to order a dozen in advance or arrive early—the farm opens at 8 during the week and at 7 on weekends. Latecomers have to make do with plain doughnuts, but they’re great, too. Cherry Hill also makes soft-serve ice cream in flavors like apple pie and occasionally pumpkin.
