do you use this term?

"what was his chat like?"

"that's some bad chat."

"guy's got GREAT chat."

pretty annoying

emphasis on performance in personal relationships: DUD

is it a new thing, I only started hearing it used in the last year

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

C J (C J), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

wtf? is this a grime thing?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

I have heard it from two people: one of my friends, in aberdeen; and, one of the lawyers, at work... they are both pretty social and judgemental... maybe there's a link

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

so you mean they dicuss a third person in terms of how well he can chat?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

if you say something offensive, perhaps: "oooh that's bad chat"
or if they were at lunch with someone boring: "god his chat was so bad"

it's like a combination of the stories you have to tell... the jokes you remember... the places you've been... anecdotes and trivia... how entertaining you are, as company...

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

we can tie it into about girls if that'd help the romantics

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

i'll try and use this today.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

Never hear this term. if someone used it in my company i'd punch em in the face.

xpost

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

if you say something offensive, perhaps: "oooh that's bad chat"

I've never seen Cozen and Alan Partridge in the same room, now I think about it.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

I've not heard it yet. But I can imagine hearing it. Is it any worse than saying "he's so boring"? Maybe.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

that's fighting chat, Ste.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

I AM ON THE CUTTING EDGE

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

it sounds more london than aberdeen, to me.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

I saw steve coogan in the car park at gatwick north terminal at 1am on wednesday morning. Where was Cozen?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

the AIM session last night was some good chat

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

"that's fighting chat" = not an example of the use of "chat"... because "chat" properly so called is a qualitative judgement on the thing said and the person saying... it's a calculus of entertainment and worth...

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

oh janet street-porter will you ever win

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

if life were an RPG, chat would be an attribute

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

I only use it in reference to AIM chats. Otherwise, not really.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

"if life were an RPG, chat would be an attribute
-- cozen (skiplevel...), October 20th, 2005."

rocket propelled grenade?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

I much preferred the term we used in my Glasgow days - "patter." "yer patter's great, pal," etc.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

you should come to AIM chat more often nathalie.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

yer patter's gallas.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

away and bile yer tatties.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

braw!

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 20 October 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

yup chat is like patter, but maybe a little wider... patter used more directly, usually addressing the person ("yr patter's like watter, pal" etc)...

chat is middle-class where patter working class?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

I use this all the time with certain friends.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 October 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

"chat" as an expression is a wee bit peely-wally.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 20 October 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

two other (different) uses:
"cameron, but the chat is davis might chuck it."
"you still saying chelsea won't win the league? that was your chat all last year."

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

People said this all the time last year, at my uni!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

so 'the chat' can mean 'the word on the street' too.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Where by "people" I mean the kids who were in the college bar all the time and kinda mockney.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I think "bad chat" is a pretty usage actually but I wouldn't use it, because they did.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

"chat", itself, isn't bad but its use in cozen's contexts is

"and I give her some old chat" (cool for cats) is good, though

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

is it ok to like that song? it's very good.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

yep

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

are we so different?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

no. but i always disagreed with my no-good brother too.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

if I like you, does it mean you can't like yourself?

I wouldn't want to be responsible for those kind of feelings : (

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

i will never accept that you like anything, so it's okay.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

I like milk

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

"banter"

welcome to british undergrad lifestyle circa 2007

Just got offed, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

banter is everywhere.

i have a friend who uses banter to mean sort of "quality of atmosphere", eg "went to a party, pretty poor banter", or "how was that gig, any banter", he also says "I had a serious need for banter but there wasn't any going"

I'm pretty sure he knows doesn't take it that seriously as he coined a word "banterlust" at one point to describe waiting around for a party after a club while high.

Ronan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, meant to say, he knows it is sort of stupid...
