What's your favourite?

I'll be going out for meze before my Greek holiday next year and I'm unfamiliar with the food.

The pastries look divine but I don't like almonds :-(

Oh, Baklava is divine. Layers and layers of filo, syrup and nuts - not normally almonds I don't think, more walnuts and pistachios.

I like salted pistachios, don't know how I'd like them as a sweet.

I also like peanuts and cashews but only as a savoury snack.

Haven't tried Moussaka - i don't like aubergines. I think my fussiness may make it difficult to consume anything when I am away.

I don't like feta cheese either.

Eek. Stuffed vine leaves are nice. Feta abounds, though. Especially if you're veggie.

There's a nice fried courgette thingy they do, with tzatziki (sp?).

all of it. greek food is the best thing in the world ever. mrs fiendish and i were in rhodes recently: among the many delights i sampled were raw sardines with chilli oil and sea salt, baked lamb wrapped in aubergines, manouri cheese with pesto, swordfish souvlaki and fried octopus.

rumpie: i used to be afeared of the aubergine, mainly because of a disgusting moussaka i ate in 1993. in the last 12 months or so i've discovered that, cooked properly (ie so it's not slimy), it is a revelation. i had moussaka in a cheap restaurant in rhodes and it was sublime.

I really, really, really want to eat moussaka. I should maybe experiment more with aubergines....

Raw sardines? Are they filleted? Do they have heads? Ooooh, I claim to be a food lover but I can't eat anything that resembles it's own body. Therefore prawns are out, as are ickle fishes and fish with heads intact.

I love swordfish, I like lamb. What do vine leaves taste like? And what is this halloumi you speak of?

the sardines were filleted, yes. a big pile of them on a bed of red onion ... god, i'm salivating at the memory.

stuffed vine leaves taste rich and delicious. they're very distinctive: i can't really compare them to anything else.

halloumi is a cheese that you fry in thin slices. it goes slightly brown and bubbly and tastes of heaven.

Mmmmm... I'm salivating now. I MUST have greek food. There are only two or three Greek restaurants that I know of in Glasgow, I visited one and was not very adventurous at all, sticking to the lamb kebabs.

The drizzling of olive oil seems very prolific, is there anything you can't put it on???

i love the giant white beans cooked in tomato sauce with loads of olive oil. i used to think ouzo was disgusting, but i have a problem refusing alcohol and we've since made our peace.

We went down to the Greek restaurant in Henley a couple years ago.

It had converted into an Italian. We'd only been 2 weeks previously!

And now there are no Greek places within 20 miles of Reading.

there's a place called real greek in hoxton market. it's very good. great giant beans. they're butter beans cooked in a rollicking tomato and oregano sauce swimming with olive oil and i luvvem.

Bwahaha. The first time I ever drank enough to get tipsy (ah, the dawn of a long and storied career), it was retsina at some taverna outside Delphi. It was the only place in town open in January that could seat us all, and they were so happy for the business, they just kept sending pitchers of the rose retsina and took, like AN HOUR to being out our entrees. By which time, of course, we were all PICKLED. Oh christ. No, seriously, I love retsina, but some of it falls on the thin, sharp, pitchy side and some is nice and rounded and a little fruitier. Just depends.

Ugh, all we ate the WHOLE time was gyros, tzatziki, souvlaki, and moussaka. It was winter and only the bare minimum of establishments were open in the little places we were traveling to and I think our guide was getting kickbacks. I'd like to go again and eat really well -- isn't that what they say, that eating well is the best revenge?

No! I had an awful time in the Kurdish place. Please do not go! My lamb kebab tasted, as Mr Rumpy so elegantly put it "Like a punch in the face".

The soup was like really watery tinned Spaghetti Hoops, and Mr R's lamb kebab variation (the menu was mostly takes on lamb kebabs) tasted as though it had been steeped overnight in battery acid.

The decorations were, typical Kurdish? I don't know, but the Mournful Girl picture made me feel guilty for eating.

They do not take credit cards either meaning an embarrassing jog to the cash machine down the road.

Puding, if memory serves me correctly consisted of milk and egg yolks. I didn't order this.

The bread was DIVINE. Perhaps my palate is just not refined enough for Kurdish eating.

Oh God Greek food....so good. Although, really, all Mediterranean food is divine. Lately, I've been thinking about Going Greek, and converting my entire diet to the foods found around the Mediterranean. They're the healthiest AND the most delicious!

tiropita is the all cheese version of spanikopita. delicious.
also, tsoureki is a greek egg bread, not unlike challah but a touch sweeter, and it is delicious. it is made in especially large and ornate loaves on new years (when a coin is hidden inside, and whoever gets a slice with a coin has luck all the next year) and greek easter (when it's often prepared with a red hardboiled egg in it to represent the blood of christ, ew).

Hah. I went to a Greek restaurant (uptown? in Queens? I forget) with Ben's parents, once. Everything was good except that I immediately ordered a pitcher of retsina for the table, and his parents are teetotallers. Whoops! So you can count on me for Greek food tourism.

Carly: When I went over to my Yiayia's for Orthodox Easter, someone explained the red eggs by way of an apocryphal/folk story related to the Resurrection. It goes like this:

A woman is at the market 3 days after Jesus' death. There are rumors flying around the market that Jesus is alive, resurrected. The woman says, "If he is alive, may all the eggs in my basket turn red." And lo, the eggs were red.

Orthodox Easter dinners always included an egg-cracking contest thing. Everyone was given a red egg and they would take turns pairing off, trying to crack the other person's egg with their own, and NOT cracking their own egg in the process. Whoever's egg remained uncracked at the end, wins!

rumples: the only restaurant in glasgow serving greek food that is close to authentic is konaki, on saucihall, close to kelvingrove. very good. but even that doesn't compare to the actual splendours of greece. AMAZING. when you go, eat the greek way - which is to order loads of mezes/appetisers and share them among everyone at the table. it's a great way to sample it all! and it's so cheap! (there, not here. here, even tsatsiki is ridiculously expensive). will you be in athens? i lived there for two years, so can give you more specific recommendations if you like - like trying out the fancy new restaurants in psiri for some modern cuisine. i'll stop now... 'else i'll go on for hours.

Apparently, the part of my family that is still in Greece (somewhere outside of Larissa, I think) live in a herding village. They make their own feta, which is (I am told) gorgeously soft & creamy & more delicious than anything store-bought. Also, homemade double-distilled ouzo.

Before I die, I want to eat that cheese and drink that booze. Oh god.

Do not go to the Corfu Palace in Paisley (or whatever it's calling itself these days). Our main courses arrived on our table about three minutes after we ordered, which didn't do much to convince me of its freshly prepared authenticity.

I won't be on mainland Greece - I'll be in Kassiopi on Corfu, spending perhaps a day or two in Albania all going well.

The fish dishes in Kassiopi are reputedly divine.
