I'll be going out for meze before my Greek holiday next year and I'm unfamiliar with the food.
The pastries look divine but I don't like almonds :-(

I also like peanuts and cashews but only as a savoury snack.
Haven't tried Moussaka - i don't like aubergines. I think my fussiness may make it difficult to consume anything when I am away.
I don't like feta cheese either.
― Rumpie, Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)
There's a nice fried courgette thingy they do, with tzatziki (sp?).

rumpie: i used to be afeared of the aubergine, mainly because of a disgusting moussaka i ate in 1993. in the last 12 months or so i've discovered that, cooked properly (ie so it's not slimy), it is a revelation. i had moussaka in a cheap restaurant in rhodes and it was sublime.

Raw sardines? Are they filleted? Do they have heads? Ooooh, I claim to be a food lover but I can't eat anything that resembles it's own body. Therefore prawns are out, as are ickle fishes and fish with heads intact.
I love swordfish, I like lamb. What do vine leaves taste like? And what is this halloumi you speak of?
― Rumpie, Thursday, 20 October 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)
stuffed vine leaves taste rich and delicious. they're very distinctive: i can't really compare them to anything else.
halloumi is a cheese that you fry in thin slices. it goes slightly brown and bubbly and tastes of heaven.

And now there are no Greek places within 20 miles of Reading.

The soup was like really watery tinned Spaghetti Hoops, and Mr R's lamb kebab variation (the menu was mostly takes on lamb kebabs) tasted as though it had been steeped overnight in battery acid.
The decorations were, typical Kurdish? I don't know, but the Mournful Girl picture made me feel guilty for eating.
They do not take credit cards either meaning an embarrassing jog to the cash machine down the road.
Puding, if memory serves me correctly consisted of milk and egg yolks. I didn't order this.
The bread was DIVINE. Perhaps my palate is just not refined enough for Kurdish eating.

Carey, Aaron and Phil's new loft...Franz's side of the squirrel tail story...Millar playing Korean nu-metal at Chris too early in the morning...meeting the force of nature that IS Millar and just experiencing him...alternating between food and drink and walking and food and drink and walking...chilling in Siberia, eating at the tapas bar, going INSANE in Bellevue...Anthony Miccio ISH Shean Connery in Drive Chrish Barrush to Deshpair...the weird-ass propaganda soundtrack to the fireworks that could have been a Negativland piece and the crap DJing beforehand...wandering around Williamsburg and marvelling at the neo-hip Thai place...wandering around Union Square and marvelling at the neo-hip pizza place..."Do it for THE BROTHERS IN HOUSTON!"...realizing that one was wandering the same streets twenty-four hour earlier and that then you had just woken up and here you had just gotten back to sleep...Sean being a caricature of himself on the phone, Bryan the possom murderer...the hyperdamn cool pizza place on the Upper West Side right near the Insanely Rich and Tasty Hungarian pastry place...Millar looking at me without my glasses and saying "I don't know you anymore"...J.Lu and Nichole telling me to remove a little hairband so that way Andrew could recognize me from my free flowing locks and then seeing him a minute later with him recognizing me for precisely that reason...the statue of decapitation and bestiality in a CHILDREN'S GARDEN next to a CATHEDRAL (H. P. Lovecraft, where are you now?)...wandering around Brighton Beach and wishing we could try all the food and eventually seeing where a young JBR grew up and then ending up at Coney Island and That Bar and That Jukebox and Those Hot Dogs ('it's toasted')..."RUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNN TOOOOOOOOOOOO THEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLS!" (and Alex in NYC was nowhere in sight and he has only himself to blame)...JBR saying that this one Greek place in Astoria called Taverna Kyklades was fantastic and we eventually get there after much toil but all the weariness we had melts away due to the Cypriot beer and the amazing salads and the wonderful bread and the GRILLED OCTOPUS and the CHEESE and the GRILLED SWORDFISH and the STUFFED SHRIMP OF GOD (the latter so astoundingly overwhelming in its brilliance that Mr. Barrus was struck into shocked silence, the only time I've EVER seen him like that because of food)...the Beer Garden! the beer! the phone calls! the series of astonished and erotically-laced reactions to the realization via phone conversations that Spencer indeed has THE SEXIEST VOICE EVER...the fact that Super Shuttle screwed me over and said I should get a cab but Bryan came to the rescue and drove me to the airport and proved what a grand egg he was...
My god, everyone who wanted to make it but couldn't, I'm damn sorry you missed it. It would have made an absolutely wonderful time even more so. SIMILAR MEGAFAP NEXT YEAR ON THE FOURTH. LA or Dallas are currently the chief candidates. (Do you want to all visit Sam and help her set off fireworks and eat the best Mexican food ever while downing many beers and all that? I THINK YOU DO.).
Tell stories now. I am barely coherent. Excuse me. *slides to floor of apartment with a dull thud(

A woman is at the market 3 days after Jesus' death. There are rumors flying around the market that Jesus is alive, resurrected. The woman says, "If he is alive, may all the eggs in my basket turn red." And lo, the eggs were red.
Orthodox Easter dinners always included an egg-cracking contest thing. Everyone was given a red egg and they would take turns pairing off, trying to crack the other person's egg with their own, and NOT cracking their own egg in the process. Whoever's egg remained uncracked at the end, wins!

The fish dishes in Kassiopi are reputedly divine.
