cd prices at hmv and virgin stores drastically reduced in price to make up for online mp3 downloading!

Indeed so? Well, I was going to do some New Year's shopping today anyway...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

does anyone actually shop at virgin or hmv anyway though?

i mean, who likes music.

david, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

order of routine shopping precedence:
1: virgin
2: tower
3: woolworth (it;s very close)
4: record and tape exchange
5: hmv (it's far)
6: other

on the other hand, i hate music, and only buy CDs to affirm my loathing when it wavers

"we have the recording industry by the ears" — but is this grip any use to us? these organs are inessential at best in the nexus in question; as a lizard its tail, so an A&R man his lugs

I am heartened my mark's bitterness.

I buy most of my CDs at HMV. For new stuff I check Asda first, though.

I always check in WHSmith first - they do the cheepist prices around. Otherwise it's the local 'indie' store or HMV.

DavidM, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

hm, but i haven't seen much evidence of price reduction in the ahem "larger" stores. i was in HMV just before Christmas and it seemed to me like punter-fleecing business as usual. the indie shops are still a lot cheaper. maybe the price reduction thing is only in the US (though Sainsbury's have been doing excellent deals for some time now with chart Cds at £9.99, doubles at £13.99)

Fats Waller 2CD set for £3.99, and THREE CD Trojan Dub Volume 2 for £6.99 is pretty good by me!! And they had the ATV cd for £10.99 HURRAH which don't seem cheap compared to BACK IN THE DAY of course but a lot better than £13.99 riporf.

"on the other hand, i hate music, and only buy CDs to affirm my loathing when it wavers" = classic.

Price-cut claims = tosh.

"People who like music don't go to HMV" = ditto.

BUT sales did get me Roy Rogers, Doris Day, Dorothy Squires and Dionne Warwick for a tenner the lot.

Ah, Ms Clarke but that was in the sale. Full price current cds are still stupidly expensive in HMV when compared to (London indie shop) Sister Ray (eg 14.99 vs 10.99).

RickyT, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

HMV sale = classic.

the tompaulin album (just er, picking an example off the top of me head!) is in HMV on CD for £14.99, and compared with £10.99 or £11.99 which is the price in most indie shops = HMV regular prices are big fat DUD.

katie, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

katie and RickyT are OF ONE MIND!!!

katie, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

People who like music in Dublin have nowhere else to go. So fuck you all and your nice prices. And the sale is good but it never has anything remotely unusual at a good price.

Ronan, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ahem I was citing my SALE BARGINS as proof of and I QUOTE: "much evidence of price reduction in the ahem "larger" stores"!!! I know generally they are more expensive, but often they have a few ahem, HIDDEN JEWELS you must DIG for. And better soundtracks.
