CFM (Call For Moratorium): that thing where you render 3D graphics in "cartoony", 2D style

as seen most recently in that x-press 2 feat kurt wagner video. and the one for mogwai's "hunted by a freak". and in plenty other commercials and stuff besides. it's really ugly in a very uninteresting way. stop it.

yeah, that's it. it's kinda more forgivable in video games, where the choice is between sharp polygons or more loveable handdrawn-looking figures, but in other media i find it much-abused.

its called cel-shading. and it should be put to bed like Old Yeller.

Er no, much more of it please, it looks lovely. Admittedly I haven't actually seen the two videos you've mentioned, but every video game with it his been pure eye-candy. Let the designers do their job without worrying about adherence with puny reality!

On the other hand, if you're talking about rotoscopig, like Waking Life/Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings/the Scanner Darkly that Linklater is now making, then you might have a point.

B-b-but, A-ha!

nono, i *like* rotoscoping! i do a lot of rotoscoping myself, even. (i'm a 2d animator).

cel-shading probably isn't going away anytime quicker than bullet-time or promoting ragdoll physics. Trends in video games, at least, take a while to shake.

And I like the effect.

What about South Park?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 23 October 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I like it in games too - Windwaker and XIII are great examples.

i think Linklater is the only time i've ever seen the modern effect(as opposed to Bakshi rotoscoping) in flicks.

In other media, it manily just seems like some sorta stylization used by certain adverts. Like for Target stores, etc.

That stuff looks OK to me, better than other cheap CG styles. But it seems to be a cop out in cases when real 2D animation is waaaay more cool. I'm a 2D animator too. What do you work on Jermaine?
