I found it fucking fantastic, personally.

It was written and directed by the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon 4 though, which I find bizarre.

Also seeing Robert Downey, Jr. embrace his sleazy side is pretty nice.

The switcheroo plot wasn't terribly plausible and I did spend most of the film and the walk home getting it straight in my head what was going on and what everyone thought was going on, but still. It was quite good. Michelle Monaghan was v.sexy, though she overdid the mouth thing. Val Kilmer was a revelation. The "bad"/"badly" grammar joke was hilarious.

thought the scene where r.d.jr shot the mustard guy was v.powerful, i.e. v.bracing

quite a light touch as well, considering all the killing going on; beautiful in places; very funny; and both male leads acted better than I think they perhaps usually can

Also, from imdb trivia: Johnny Knoxville was set to star as Harry Lockhart before being replaced by Robert Downey Jr.

I like Knoxville but BULLET DODGED.

Actually with him it probably would've made another $30mil and kept him from making The Ringer.

Just watched this last night and was absolutely delighted by it on every level. Funny, touching, stylish, clever, perhaps a little implausible but then again it is film noir, essentially. Awesome.

megalolz at "Gay Perry" shooting dude with his "faggot gun". video store buddy's line was that it works as a sleazy thriller and as a parody of sleazy thrillers, which seems about right. all the noir book titles/chapter headings were a nice touch

Saw it a few weeks ago for the first time. Liked that Black figured out the way to put his screenplay voice ("OK, guys, we're starting out with a chase scene...") into Downey's ADD narrator. Enjoyed the whole thing.

I like to think that the implausible/incomprehensible murder plot is kind of a nod to Chandler. I mean, hello "Big Sleep"...I read somewhere that even Chandler admitted he couldn't really explain that one fully either.
