It was written and directed by the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon 4 though, which I find bizarre.
Also seeing Robert Downey, Jr. embrace his sleazy side is pretty nice.

thought the scene where r.d.jr shot the mustard guy was v.powerful, i.e. v.bracing
quite a light touch as well, considering all the killing going on; beautiful in places; very funny; and both male leads acted better than I think they perhaps usually can

Just watched. Lots of fun. Totally overlooked.
Also, from imdb trivia: Johnny Knoxville was set to star as Harry Lockhart before being replaced by Robert Downey Jr.
I like Knoxville but BULLET DODGED.
Actually with him it probably would've made another $30mil and kept him from making The Ringer.

Just watched this last night and was absolutely delighted by it on every level. Funny, touching, stylish, clever, perhaps a little implausible but then again it is film noir, essentially. Awesome.
― Scik Mouthy, Monday, 12 May 2008 08:13 (eighteen years ago)
This is a very very funny and entertaining film, but I've seen it three times now and still have only the faintest idea of what actually happens in it.

watched this film two days back. so great.
had the feeling about 60 minutes in that i'd lost track of the plot, which I always get when i read raymond chandler, but in both cases i didn't really care.
― caek, Friday, 19 December 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)
finally watched this last night
megalolz at "Gay Perry" shooting dude with his "faggot gun". video store buddy's line was that it works as a sleazy thriller and as a parody of sleazy thrillers, which seems about right. all the noir book titles/chapter headings were a nice touch
― larry craig memorial gloryhole (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 January 2010 22:44 (sixteen years ago)
Saw it a few weeks ago for the first time. Liked that Black figured out the way to put his screenplay voice ("OK, guys, we're starting out with a chase scene...") into Downey's ADD narrator. Enjoyed the whole thing.

love love love this movie.
I like to think that the implausible/incomprehensible murder plot is kind of a nod to Chandler. I mean, hello "Big Sleep"...I read somewhere that even Chandler admitted he couldn't really explain that one fully either.
so many awesome lines. "...and to all the good people of the Midwest, sorry we said fuck so much"
― VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 11 January 2010 22:55 (sixteen years ago)
yeah at one point I resigned myself to not being able to unravel everything and realized that that was the case with most noir that I really love (Big Sleep, Maltese Falcon, any number of James Ellroy books, etc.)

Perry: Did your dad love you? Harry: Only when I dressed up like a beer bottle, how about you? Perry: Well, he used to beat me in Morse code, so it's possible, but he never said the words.
