I'd like to stream internet video. How?

Okay, so here's the idea. People I know sometimes live on the otherside of the world, and don't get shows or events that I do right here in the US. So, I thought of a brilliant idea to help them out (additionally so, because I wanted to build my own DVR anyhow): What if I could compress the video in realtime and stream it to them on a fairly private/nonadvertised of any kind stream over the internet? I only have a DSL connection, but I figure I could broadcast something halfway decent at 150-200KBPS, but where could I find a server or waystation for the video to go through so that I don't clog up bandwidth if 5-10 people are all watching at the same time? Is this even possible?

And yes, I'm aware I'd be breaking a whole array of domestic and international copyright laws, so you don't even have to bring it up.

Alan might it not be a better idea to just offer files for download? Possibly less strain on yr connection. Also, I'm assumign you can actually get 200kbps on your UPLOAD side? which means your DSL would have to be 256k or faster on the upload (ie possibly 512 on download or more). Video streams will flood the uplink, and you may find that then renders doing anything else on yr DSL impossible. Just so you know ;)

You can sort of stream by offering the file as a real media downloadable, but proper realmedia streaming feeds have to be set up by your webhost, I think.

And I doubt any ISP is going to do that for you so you can send illegally copied TV shows overseas ;)

Yeah. It would be time consuming with uploading, but Rapidsare.de works fine as server space.

Good points. I doubt my friends over in Germany and Australia want to watch ESPN2 boxing cards live so badly they'd chip in for a wider pipe. They can wait for the DVD-Rs.
