I heard nothing about this! But then again, I was not near a television for most of the weekend. I suppose that is an argument *for* television, if you become so detached from current events without one.

sounds pretty fucked-up.

Warren G, the DJ who aired the allegation on his radio talkshow and then staged a demonstration outside the store where the rape was rumoured to have occurred, told the Guardian he had merely sought to highlight a community concern. "I demonstrated because I firmly believe that something happened," he said. "I have no proof and no facts, but I believe there are witnesses out there. They know who they are. The violence didn't have anything to do with my demonstration." He said he had never claimed to have any facts about the alleged assault.

He should co-host a show with Dr Fox

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 24 October 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

"there is no evidence for this, but it is a scientific fact."

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 24 October 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

This is awful, especially the way "female honour" has been exploited. Also awful if the assault did happen, however it does sound dubious. Hasn't Birmingham always had racial tensions? Like Enoch Powell in 1968 with his "rivers of blood" speech.

blimey, what a palaver.

Interesting. I had no real idea about the Africa connection re people from Asia starting businesses here.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

The 80s Handsworth riots were much cooler. Especially the big photo of George Berry's brother strolling down the High Street with a molotov in his hand.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

that was the stand-out line, yeah, the afro-caribbean guy saying that he'd been there first and the (afro-)-asians had come over (in the 70s) and taken all the jobs.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought the fact that he was casting doubt on whether Asians had actually been mistreated at all by Idi Amin (i.e., a Black African leader) was noteworthy

... that smacked a bit of "He might be a bloodthirsty tyrant but he's OUR bloodthirsty tyrant."

Not for the people that lived there, one would imagine..

I say the people of Handsworth, know that
One hand wash the other so they say
So let's join hands my bredren
Make the way for our children (our children, our children)
And their children (their children, their children)
Ensuring that they get life's fair share of...
Equality...
Doesn't justice stand for all
Doesn't justice stand for all
Doesn't justice stand for all mankind
We find society putting us down
Crowning us, crowning us, crowning us, crowning us
A place of Evil, OH, OH
Handsworth means us the Black People
Handsworth means us the Black People
We're taiklng now. Speaking Jah Jah language!

It's a long, long way we're coming from
To send this message across, across
Its been hidden, forbidden, concealed, unrevealed
Its got to come out In the open that -

BABYLON IS FALLING
BABYLON IS FALLING

It was foolish to build It on the sand
Handsworth shall stand, firm - like Jah rock
- fighting back
We once beggars are now choosers
No intention to be losers
Striving forward with ambition
And if it takes ammunition
We rebel in Handsworth revolution

Dread town, dread town, dread town,
Dread town, dread town, dread town,

Dread we are for a cause
Deprived of many things
Experienced phoney laws
Hatred Babylon brings
We know what we got to offer
We know what's going on
Don't want no favours
Cause there is still hunger
Innocent convicted
Poor wage, hard labour
Only Babylon prospers
And humble suffer
They are brothers in south of Africa
One Black represent all, all over the world
Can't bear it no longer
Blessed wlththe power
Of Jah Creator
We will get stronger
And we will conquer
And forward ever, and backward never
Handsworth Revolution
Handsworth Revolution
Handsworth Revolution
Revo- Revo- Revolution
Revo- Revo- Revolution
Revo- Revo- Revolution
Revo- Revo- Revolution
Revo- Revo- Revolution

ELO.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, nice song. Shame its a load of bollocks.

Most of the people who lived there at the time weren't glorious revolutionaries. They were ordinary people, scared shitless by what was going on.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

SEND IN THE TROOPS!

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

No, just have a bit of fucking compassion and stop saying how wonderful people smashing up each other's homes, and each other is.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Although sending in the troops would be a last resort, and a valid one.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, answer the other point, rather than just smugly quoting me - why is a riot such a fucking wonderful thing? Would you like to be caught in the middle of one? If you would, if you're some KERAZY ANERCHKIST then my apologies. You are clearly a more deranged man than me. personally, I would rather whatever could be done to end the situation was done.

And I didn't mean that shooting people should be used to solve the problem.. in fact I sort of said that because I was so angry about everything else you'd posted.. but what WOULD you advise if a riot couldn't be quelled by the police? Yes, its very nice to say let's look at the social conditions - and that's what you have to do when you're picking up the pieces - but as its going on, what do you do then? Do you just let people kill each other? Because people died in the Handworth riots, you know.

I'm probably biased because my Grandad lived there during the latter years of his life. The racial tension there isn't something new, and remarkable. Its something mundane but (for him) terrifying.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Anything is better than This.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Also, George Berry is graet.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Well, if it was a joke I apologise. I'm sorry. I find it hard to see the humour in the situation but that's probably because people I knew and loved lived there and suffered as a result of everything that was going on there before the riots. Perhaps I should just have stayed away from this thread..
