the new barnes & noble shopping bags

i like 'em. it's an "old money" look that nicely contrasts the "hey! carry this around and everyone will know YUO REDE SHEKSPIRE (and ann rice)" image of the older bags. it looks like it's advertising a venerable, no-nonsense investment firm, not a pretentious bookstore chain.

But the cd/dvd bags are still clear, right?

M. V. (M.V.), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea. i've never bought a cd or dvd at barnes & noble.

jagged little filly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

why not? They're only $18.99 a pop...

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Thank goodness they've filled the void left by the demise of Sam Goody's.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

With their broad selection of lite jazz and shitty world music, they're really expanding the niche market for overpriced media.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

what, you're not clamoring for a putumayo sampler?

jagged little filly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Sam Goody has not yet expired.

M. V. (M.V.), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

I miss the old logo with the monk illuminating the manuscript. (Or at least I think that's what it was)

In my experience, B & N has an assortment of up-to-ten-year-old out of print CDs and DVDs, not quite all of them execrable.

M. V. (M.V.), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

In this, Borders is even better/worse.

M. V. (M.V.), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

I got one of these bags yesterday. Why don't they use paper bags for the smaller bags at least?

jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

I work at Barnes & Noble, you fucking shittalkers.

I like the new bags. We do have a variety of bag sizes, Jon, but not all are always in stock with each cashier. Also: lazy cashiers prefer using only the medium sized bags.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Also: our barnes & noble does not have a music section. JBR were you in my barnes & noble today?

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

The old bags always annoyed me, as do the portraits in the store, because they're mostly people who couldn't possibly object (being dead and all)

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Ian, do you work in the B&N on C0urt Str33t?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

I WORK AT BORDERS which is clearly the cool indie B&N alternative.

"Being on this shopping bag is killing me"

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

k/l: no, the one on 7th ave in pork slope. i won't be working again there til sunday.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

the cd/dvd bags are in fact still clear.

and for most cities in america, B&N's jazz selection is about a thousand times better than what you'll find at best buy or wal-mart and ten thousand times better than the local indie-schmindie record store. same goes for their classical music.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

also: we can special order most CDs for you, bitchez!!

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

just not this week, because our main music distro is in southern florida.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

oh schnap. a lot of our distros are in JERSEY.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't really mind Barnes and Noble, especially since there are no good indie bookstores that I know of in Hudson County. But I guess that's kind of like saying "My new foster father's not such a bad guy, and besides, after he shot my dad he was the only one there for me."

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Do these new plastic bags separate easily, Special Agent? Are they sturdy enough to carry many a thick text? Are they pedestrian-friendly? Are they very opaque? Do you know their percentage of recycled content? Are they more matte or glossy? Does the matteness or glossiness of the taxt contrast with the matteness or glossiness of the plastic behind it? I need to know soon; I'm nowhere near a B&N.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 28 October 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

JBR were you in my barnes & noble today?

no, the court street one.

jagged little filly (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 October 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

Borders is dirty.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 28 October 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Borders cafe has good coffee though.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 October 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

That reminds me that my dad always used to call it "Borders and Books". It would drive me batshit - I corrected him every time, but he'd still always say, "Do you want to go to Borders and Books?" Dad! They don't fucking sell borders! They sell books!

Jody, I'm trying to think of some kind of Mission Impossible coded clue I can leave for you in the Court Street B&N- cleverly misfile one of the music books maybe? - but basically no matter how deep I dig, I'm still coming up with lint.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)
