Yes, Dada but those are genuine alternate spellings! There are about 20 different ways of spelling Katharine/Catherine/Katherine/Catharine/Kathryn etc but I don't say that the others are WRONG, they are just not my name.

Anyway, this thread makes me too depressed as I've been guilty of most of these. It's not that I *believe* those words are spelled that way, it's just that I can't remember how they are spelled.

Except Mischeviously. That is a word I *BELIEVE* should be spelled that way.

Atheist of Love (kate), Friday, 28 October 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

aye, stop calling me g-klit.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 28 October 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

53. pronounciation

I would add to that, that anyone who pronounces the word 'pronunciation' with the second syllable sounding like 'noun' instead of 'nun' should be shot.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 28 October 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

As one of my teachers once said:

"It's easy to avoid getting staionary and stationery mixed-up — stationery is sold by a stationer , while a stationar is where a pirate catches a train."

cool thanks, that will shut a few people up who i work with.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Re that ce/se ending, the trick is to devise a device to help you remember which is the noun and which the verb.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Is that correct? I thought it was a UK/US thing, "-ce" being the US ending, "-se" the UK.

But now that I look at it and look it up, I see that I was wrong!
US: license, practice
UK: licence, practise

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

int he us is different yes

ken c (ken c), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Is there is a UK/US divide over offence/offense?

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

There is over all those ence/ense words, isn't there?

perrenial (everyone can spell "annual" but they can't move those two n's over to perennial)
fushcia (the plant was identified by a German named Fuchs, so if you're a nerd like me you can remember the right spelling that way)
Ceasar

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

License (US) vs. licence (UK) is the tricky one because it seems to be an exception to the rule.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I used to get all judgmental about people who wrote "judgement" instead of "judgment," only to find out that both spellings are allowed. Grr. "Judgement" still looks wrong to me.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

what's wrong with would've, could've, should've, sort've? etc?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

The first three are fine - but try to expand the fourth.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I think they're allowable if you're writing dialogue or writing an ILX post. I don't know about "sort've," though. I'd go for "sorta."

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I used to get all judgmental about people who wrote "judgement" instead of "judgment,"

That reminds me for some reason of this one:

And "it's" meaning "its"
And "your" for "you're"

Or even "you" for "your"

But maybe these are more commonly encountered typos.

People writing "nevermind" as one word (when not talking about Nirvana) irks me.

Ark Hopping (avoid80), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Wikipedia says that "teh" originated as a common typo for "the." That NEVER happpens to me. I always type "hte."

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Couldn't you basically classify ALL misspellings that aren't typos under this category? I don't understand the distinction here.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I think it means misspellings that you see often enough or have made yourself or have seen smart people make, so that you don't automatically think the person is an idiot for making them.
